I would like to point out that I'm pretty sure no one told you to
obtain What a Girl Wants. I have a feeling that one was all you! I
am still sad that I have somehow not seen Girl with a Pearl Earring
(despite so-so reviews). I read the book! And...it has Colin
Firth! How on earth did that one slip by me?!

Ah yes.  The Ethel Merman of our generation.  It reminds me of the quote about swimmer-turned-movie-star Esther Williams, "Dry, she ain't much, but wet, she's a star,"  Take away any films in which characters named Darcy or Bennett play a prominent role and he's just another actor.

I've only reviewed 10 of Firth's 54 movie appearances thus far, but there was a period between 2001 and 2003 where I saw everything he appeared in.  Guess whose fault that was?

One more thing.  Iben Mereni has also found his way into my personal email addresses, in addition to my yahoo group.  I'm thinking this guy must be legit!

I've already given notice, thanks to this email. Now I can tell
everyone that annoys me to kiss my fat ass. I owe it all to Mr.
Mereni. I'd promise to stay in touch when I get my money, but we all
know that won't happen.

jet to pick you up, but now it looks like you can afford it yourself.

Not married yet.  It's just so hard to find a woman who'll let me call her "Cyrus" in bed.

As for this "my wife" bit you causually threw in your last post, is
there any truth to that? And as for Guitar Hero, I wanted to hate the
game, but as soon as I played it I was having a good time. The South
Park episode about Guitar Hero is gold!

You notice these posts about you not posting have gotten the most posts!?

As someone who still plays video games and reads comic books, I can state with some authority that there's nothing wrong in my mind with clinging to one's youth (or staying true to form, or giving those women who like a challenge something to work on).

By the way, when your future daughter becomes sexually active, she has a standing invitation to come over and play Guitar Hero with me, but please, only when my wife isn't home.

By the way Jen, you didn't tell me how elated you were that I actually had a review up this time of one of the rare movies you saw.  What a way to make a reviewer feel appreciated!

Yea, I think that's pretty much it--he didn't want to grow up and
wasn't ready to be a dad. His wife tried to suppress those
tendencies (which Juno saw originally as being a bit unfair), but
later when he announced the divorce I think she realized he was
immature instead of fun. I think she liked hanging with him because
he was fun and liked that her baby would have a cool dad--but in her
naivete, she still thought that because he was older, he was
grownup, when clearly he is still clinging desperately to his
youth. And like many guys who refuse to grow up and whose youthful
obsessions are kept repressed, once he found that he could share
them with Juno, I think he got all the excitement tangled up in his
relationship with her. Because he wasn't quite child molestery, but
he was definitely placing feelings and other hopes on her. Like, I
got the feeling when he mentioned that he was moving to a loft that
he was hoping she'd think it was awesome and want to come visit.
Because he is immature and selfish, he didn't realize that she
wouldn't be happy about it--that she wouldn't see it as they were
now free to have fun. He didn't realize that he was ruining the
perfect life she had envisioned for her baby--one that didn't
involve a broken home. But it did make her realize that Vanessa was
actually the perfect one, not Mark.

Guess precocious 16 year olds don't know everything--which her
stepmom and friend did try to warn her about! Actually pretty much
everyone she talked to said it was weird she was hanging out with
mark. But yea, that dance scene was just really uncomfortable! I
was half expecting him to try to kiss her, but was really glad it
didn't go that way!

I can't believe my coworker didn't see this. Though, granted, he is
a bit younger, and perhaps as naive as Juno?

WAIT, WAIT, WAIT A SECOND THERE! Are you saying that enjoying comic
books, guitar rock'n'role, and younger girls is creepy! I'm in the
wrong damn club! Who are we if we don't cling to our youth? And by the
way, it's not clinging. It's staying true to form. I plan on enjoying
video games and the view of a pretty girl when I'm 95, and honestly,
I'll be proud of it.
Unless, of course, my next child is a girl. In that case, I'll kick
any of you old fart's ass if I catch you even thinking about looking
at the younger ladies! They are here to be respected and cherished!

Regards,

Cy

I was being facetious about "accidentally", but it's kinda true, I watched No Country for Old Men on Sunday, so I technically saw it before you asked why I hadn't reviewed it, although the review was all but complete at the time you posted.

I also saw Sweeney Todd, so feel free to see and recommend that tonight before I write the review. ;)

As for Juno...

**JUNO SPOILER ALERT**

My housemate may disagree with you on the inappropriateness, but I agree, that there was an element of the Bateman character that made it seem like he was interested in being a little closer than appropriate with Juno. However, I don't think that he was attracted to her because she is a teenager, which would be the really creepy thing, rather than someone he can relate to given his less-than-mature state of mind -- he still fancied himself as a young man. Remember that he still into the stuff he liked when he was young, like the guitar, grunge/punk music, comics, etc.  Whereas his wife seemed to disapprove of his need to cling to his childhood, Juno thought he was one cool dude because of it.  He obviously wasn't ready to "grow up" and had an attraction to her youthful enthusiasm for his world that his wife didn't.

That said, it is still clear that he was half-hoping something could happen between himself and Juno, though what that something is is subject to debate. regardless, it would have been something definitely inappropriate given her age and his marital status.

At least he wouldn't have knocked her up.

The nearly 3-hour length is a bit inhibitive, but being a PT Anderson
film, I definitely do want to see There Will Be Blood.

Since I accidentally reviewed a film Jen has seen, it's good to know I
have been actively avoiding Cyrus's recommendations.

One thing I should mention: it takes a lot longer to write a review
for a great movie than a bad one. One of the biggest appeals for pure
pap entertainment is that I can churn out the review without much
having to do a bunch of research or struggle to come up with what to say.

We are, by nature, more expressive when it comes to things we don't
like. When you eat a favorite dish made poorly, and someone were to
ask why you didn't like it, you could probably go on and on about what
aspects of the meal aren't up to snuff. However, if you ate that same
dish and it was very good, and someone asked why you thought so, it's
harder to relate what you mean when you say it is good.

Usually, "I love it" is sufficient to gauge one's opinion and people
don't ask for a follow-up. If you say "It sucks", others will
probably ask what's the matter with it. We flex our muscle of
expression of disapproval much more often. This is why I always tell
people that it's easier to review a bad film than a good one, and also
why it takes longer to write a positive review than a negative,
especially when people ask more out of your writing when reviewing a
favorite film than they do when you trach a movie no one has any
affection for.

It was becoming difficult to predetermine which movies Jen would
watch, so I accidentally saw this on Sunday. Reviews are taking a
little longer to complete, as I have less free time than had been the
case, and more emphasis on quality control than had been the norm in
the past.

What about "There Will Be Blood"? I've heard some wonderful things
about this film.
And as far as watching Heroes...don't. It's a bad comicbook of a tv
show. The writing is weak, the production value is that of normal
television dramas.

Just go get Season 1 of LOST. Not only is it the best tv show I've
ever seen, I think it's better than 99.5 % of the movies I've seen in
the last 3 years. Actaully, the writing of Season 1's "Walkabout"
episode is single handedly the best writing I've ever had the pleasure
to watch.

So in short: Heroes is for Fanboys who will like anything with
cheerleaders and superheros. LOST is a program that challanges the
viewer, has complex characters, superb production value and top notch
writing.

Hmmm...was it you or Gillon...haha ;-)

I'm gonna hold off on the review til I've had a chance to see the movie...though I impressed with it's #1 one ranking by Vince for movie of the year.  It's also # one on another friend's list I just saw.  Unfortunately the dvd doesnt come out until 3/11...something to look forward to at least!

You're not the only one who thinks I have a conspiracy to not watch this movie:

Hi Vince,

My name is Gillon....Netflix says we are 76% similar, which is odd, as generally, I'm not very similar to anybody. So, I scoped out your pages. Nicely done, and I like your attitude.

I'm sure your much more nuanced and sophisticated about reviewing than I am, but that  being said......How come I cant find "No Country for Old Men" listed in your pages? (of course right after I hit the send button, I will see it everywhere)

I have been searching for a, or, a set of movies that "say something"...Something that I understand, and believe. I started this search in 1959 when I saw my first movie: "Operation Petticoat" Not much to choose from there. Over the years, as the prices went up, I began to notice that it was sorta like looking for a certian type of candy in a huge candy store with no labels on the packets....I could get forest gumpy here...

At any rate, over the years a few stood out...Dr. Strangelove(all Stanley Kubrick for that matter), Magnolia, Crash, Amores Perros, Red Violin, HariKari, etc....Many came close to what I was looking for, many danced around......No direct hits though.  No Country for Old Men was not a direct hit either, but after a 50 year vigil, I gotta put this one at the VERY TOP.

So, I wonder to myself why this particular film seems conspicuously absent from your lists. This is not a criticism, indeed I could have just plain not seen it-that would be like me-or perhaps your going to see it tonight...Who knows.

Go well my friend, and keep up the good work.

Jeez man, once again you have not reviewed a recent movie that I

I saw No Country for Old Men, which given its Oscarness and Cohen

What gives?? Are you trying to make sure I never know what you
think of the movies I actually watch??

Good point, though we all know those aren't the same reasons that keep
Vince from watching recent releases. So, what gives??

I want to see NCFOM...but will prolly have to wait til DVD at this point.

For the record, I have not seen any of the 5 nominees for best picture. Dang, didn't think I was doing that poorly...though in my defense most of them have not yet been released on DVD.

Jeez man, once again you have not reviewed a recent movie that I
have seen. What gives?! I thought for sure this would be one you'd
review too, since it's all in Oscar contention and stuff.

I saw No Country for Old Men, which given its Oscarness and Cohen
Brothersness, I am surprised you did not have up already!

What gives?? Are you trying to make sure I never know what you
think of the movies I actually watch??

I fear having to review everything I see or do. When I start
reviewing my BMs, please promise you'll coordinate an intervention, OK?

Since I have the first season of Heroes on HD-DVD, that will be next.

I haven't seen Lost, but I'll keep it in mind. The trouble with some
of these shows is that there are too many hours and hours to sit
through to get caught up. At least Sarah Connor is caught from the
beginning, but if the quality continues at this clip, I suspect that I
won't have to sit through too many seasons.

It sucks that I'm forced to root for the Green Bowl Packers in the
playoffs, but who else can stop the cheating juggernaut Pats?
