To the PSAS Faithful,
With the new PINK PANTHER movie in theaters this weekend,
the lone member of the cast and crew who knew and worked with Peter Sellers has
spoken about their times together.
Last night, on ABC’s JIMMY KIMMEL late-night show,
John Cleese made a point of discussing PS when the host alluded to the classic
PINK PANTHER films.
Direct quote; “I really, really liked him. He was
very, very nice to me.”
Paraphrasing the rest; Mr. Cleese elaborated on how he and
his fellow Monty Pythonite, the late Graham Chapman, wrote scripts for PS in
the 1960s and what a pleasure it was to hear PS laugh when he (PS) found
something funny, because it was a deep heartfelt response. Mr. Cleese then told
an anecdote about how he and Mr. Chapman waited to see PS in residence one
morning, and how Bert Mortimer (PS’ longtime factotum/chauffeur) went and
got PS who emerged in a dressing gown and went through a couple of voices en
route to closer proximity to his waiting guests, finally speaking in his own
voice as he settled in opposite them. Mr. Cleese said that he and Mr. Chapman came
to the realization that PS was literally finding his own voice as part of
getting up in the morning and starting his day.
Always enlightening to hear from those who were there and
knew him well, no?
Best regards,
Jason Simos
