The Diana Chronicles by Tina Brown (a #1 NY TIMES Bestseller and said to be
"amazingly detailed,insanely readable,un-put-downable")
Whatever...I check indexes for names and topics of interest to me.
Sometimes like bingo I get a quote.Halfway into the book re:Charles'and Diana's
to be -wedding-it alleges that on the night of the pre-wedding ball at
Buckingham Palace,Charles sneaked off for .....what ?
"Was it a last tryst with Camilla ? The logistics of such subterfuge made it
unlikely and preposterous. So where did he go?(in the palace)
Sally Duchess of Westminster noted to James Lees-Milne,who wrote it in his
diary-that the Prince was absent from the festivities for several hours to spend
the time with The Goons."
The author continues..."Is it possible Charles's mysterious disappearance that
night was to be entertained by his favorite ? The Goon Show ?
The Goons and the characters have been Prince Charles's 'lifelong' comedic
passion."
That "Their anarchic, verbally sophisticated, comedy is a passion of the Prince
of Wales."
That "If a conversation with him flags,he will reach for his impersonations of a
Goon.He may have been in love with Camilla, but he was as much in love with The
Goons.
So did he go to Camilla ? Or did he go to Ned Seagoon and Major Bloodnok ?
For what it's worth "(ALL this has been -the author speaking) "I would bet on
gags over shags."
End quote.
It is a preposterous quote from a weird book. But it's always cool to find
current references in new books-bestsellers too-that still "bring up" the
creations of Sellers.
