Hi there.
Welcome to the group! Having only attempted Anna costumes, I can't
offer you much advice on Dracula's brides, except that there's a lot
of silk and a lot of dyeing involved. The bride that wears green is
Verona, and she is the oldest of the brides. I haven't actually seen a
pattern that I think works, so your best bet is to do some drafting.
The impression I get from the brides' costumes is that there is a lot
of draping involved, but if you dye the fabric, you want to make sure
you get the grade correct.
Sketch it out, and definitely do a mock-up.

I don't know of any sites that tell you how to make it, but I had used
Simplicity 5138 (Which is now OOP, but still avaliable from their
website) for it. I had redone the sleeves of the top with 2 yards
fabric each dying the tips and sewing ribbon loops to the ends. I had
also used white lace and beaded trim for the top of it.
The middle, I used a flesh leotard to paint on the flowers and sewed
some remaining pieces to the back and front like shown. I also used
tiny buttons for the tiny dots from the flowers and covered them in
iridescent fabric paint. The choker is tricky...I took some sheer
ribbon and sewed regular lace to it, as well as the beads. But, the
tricky part of the beads is the fact your hair/wig can get tangled up
in it, so be careful.
Ok, I'm new to this group, but I love love love costumes! I'm 20 years
old and I have a weakness for the darn things. I recently watched Van
Helsing and I love the costumes Anna and Dracula's Brides wear. Does
anyone have a website that tells you how to make those costumes? A
friend of mine is graduating from high school and I need a sensational
costume to get back at a certain ex-boyfriend, i.e. (I don't know her
name so I'll tell you the color she wears) the bride that wears green.
I've already looked through www.costumersguide.com which referred me to
this group. So with that in mind does anyone know where I can find a
website that tells you how to make these costumes? Thanks!!
Peace. Out.
Yes, the FIDM that will have the Academy Award nominee
costumes is the one in downtown Los Angeles. As
Charlie has been nominated the odds are that Charlie's
coat will be there - but it all depends on what the
studio sends to FIDM.
The studios now use the FIDM exhibit as a place
for the Academy members to come and get a close look
at the costumes so they tend to send their best. (Not
so when the FIDM Academy exhibits first started.)
To Nonya in regards to RAY getting an Oscar
nomination. I'm sorry but being in charge of the
costuming for a movie like RAY is more than shopping
Thrift stores. Being the Costume designer means
costuming everyone so that they look right for the
period along with evoking a mood. Yes, a film like
RAY doesn't require the creativity of a Van Helsing or
a Charlie but it is just as difficult. Not a lot of
clothes remain from the early days of Ray Charles's
career - so many things had to be recreated. Yes,
some vintage stuff was bought but the designer has to
know what vintage stuff is correct. It may seem
simple but it requires a great deal of research and
study. And as, I believe, G. Pescucci said herself -
if I do my job correctly then the movie goer isn't
even aware of my costumes as costumes - they are just
there. Harder for something like Van Helsing but very
easy for something like RAY. That's why the Costume
Designer's for contemporary movies usually lose out to
period or fantasy films in the Awards - the average
Academy member is NOT aware of the effort to create a
real look.

Hi!
Thanks so much for those links. Yes, FIDM is located in Downtown Los Angeles.
I am just minutes from there and I had no idea they did this every year.
I saw the video link you sent me. Have a great idea, I want to contact FIDM to
see if they need help setting up the costumes. As I designer myself, I think I
would faint if I could get my hands on Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka costume and set
it up for the display LOL!!! hahahaha
Thanks so much and wish me luck ;-)

Also adding to the "Oh Come On!" factor, a great many
of the costumes in "Ray" were old vintage finds, or
based directly on films from the past (ie: one of the
back up singers dresses was a direct re-dyed copy of
Marilyn Monroe's famous white grate dress) so
basically they nominated them for watching a few old
movies and shopping at thrift stores.

It's good news, but I'm quite upset that she was overlooked for "Van
Helsing" last year. I mean, they put in one token fantasy film (if
any, sometimes) and somehow, a movie that barely takes place 50 years
ago is nominated. Case in point, "Ray" being nominated instead. I
mean, anyone can make a '60s tux, but to make Drac look like a
J-Rocker is a far-higher achievement.
Of course, she was passed over for the Saturn Award for "Sky Captain
and the World of Tomorrow"...which I have to say is absolute bull.
Like I said, she has a lot of talent for historical fantasy, I don't
know why they keep looking her over.
But, I was a little more impressed with "Brothers Grimm", to be
honest. I'm not saying I'm not making the trackie suits, but her
historical stuff wows me more than anything.
Oscar Nominations are out, and Gabriella is included! She got a
nomination for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:

Hi! I am wondering if anyone here has attempted a reproduction of
Angelika (Lena Heady)'s costume in Brothers Grimm- this one,
specifically:

Pictures, pattern ideas GREATLY appreciated!
Hello,
Was doing a search on Johnny Depp's red plush coat from Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory. I want to recreate it. I am a costume
designer and I am very detailed accurate when recreating a costume
one sees in a movie or comic.
I have attended the San Diego Comic Con for years now and have
recreated costumes from comics and movies to a T.
I really refuse to purchase and off the rack "WANNABE" I guess you
can say Willy Wonka cheap replica coat that looks nothing like what
Johnny wore in the movie. I like my costume replicas to be as close
to if not, practically the same as to what the actors wore in the
movie.
I was wondering, is there anyone that knows where I can get a good
pattern to replicate Johnny's coat? and don't know if this is too
much to ask but does anyone know how to get in contact with
Gabriella, the costume designer for the movie. All I want is maybe
an e-mail address. I want to ask her where she purchased the fabric
materials to design the Willy Wonka costume.
HAHAHA I am not kidding, I am VERY meticulous and when I replicate a
movie costume, I do not mess around and always spend hundreds if not
thousands of dollars to get the costume to look exactly like the
movie. It is my job.
Well, any help will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Annissė

to anyone who has or plans to sell a costume, this concerns you. I
recently entered into negotiations with a client to sell a costume.
The whole story is long and confusing so I'll just leave you with the
moral. If you recieve a payment particularly united states post
office money orders have them checked at the place where the money
order supposedly came from. DON"T cash them at you bank!!!!!. There
are a great deal of money orders that are counterfiet out there
especially the united states post office ones, the bank will most
likly cash them, but beware if they are indeed counterfeit you are
rsponsible for the bank's loss what ever amount it is, I now owe
nearly $4,000 dollars because of this. also if you are contacted by a
guy named tulip tim or some variation of that name beware these are
professional con artists,
hope this helps someone from going through this
grace
I was just trying to find pictures of Van Helsing Costumes on the web
and came across this YahooGroup. Glad I found you!
I just bought an overcoat from Van Helsing today and am really happy
with it.
Being that everyone here is fans of the designer, I wanted to let you
know that Van Helsing costumes and masks/headpieces (from the
masquerade scene, are on sale in Los Angeles at It's A Wrap in Burbank
and the Westside.
The overcoat was from an outside scene, I'm still trying to find it.
Most of the pieces of clothing are overcoats, vests and trousers, all
in drab colors, and light to moderately distressed.
The masks were plaster and plastic, the headpieces and hats were mesh,
and buckram, made by an Italian hat designer, Teccuci or something
like that. I'll post pics of the coat if anyone is interested.
Yeah so my old one has just seen too many days, and I redid it. (and
pardon the fact that I adjusted the outfit to turn it all
pirate...it's become a new hobby to yoink costumes, spruce them up for
a different look and so forth...^_^)

Three days of really freaking hard work! I tore apart my old corset,
took out the steel boning, the lacing, and the straps/buckles. I
ordered from studsandspikes.com some gold cones, silver cones, and
silver spikes. I literally spent an entire day doing the studding and
spiking, as I did the front panels, and the back panels. I had to
throw together lacing quickly, and need to redo that this week, but
other than that, it turned out rather well. :-)

Sorry my Anna costume pics did not attach last time:
here are the links:
Shows me and hubby as Anna & Van Helsing at Ren Fest last year. We
added a plumed hat. It's not Anna, but keeps sun off face, fun and
"piratey." People still called out "van helsing" and called me Anna.
My buckles are way bigger than Anna's but it works better for
festivals where people can more easily see them. Husband made his
crossbow out of toy rifle and drinking cup, and carpenters's molding.
Click on thumbnails for bigger pics.
http://pygmypony.net/V&V05/index.htmhttp://pygmypony.net/AnnaV/index.htm
Liv,
Your best bet for Anna buckles would be to make them
yourself out of fimo or sculpey. They are very fancy
buckles, and there is no company out there (so far)
that makes them. You could inquire as to having them
specially made by a metal worker, but they would
probably cost you loads of money. Mine came out like
this with sculpey buckles:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/mira_delune/Anna%20Valerious/anna_1.jpg
However, I am in the process of remaking it with
heavier materials, and it's going to be a bit more
accurate.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi,
I got buckles for my Anna costume last year at Tandy
leather, they are not totally accurate. In fact they
are much larger than hers, but I get an amazing
reaction from the corset and boots and costume at
parties, Rennaissance festivals, that I frequent
throughout the year.
We bought a basic black "dominatrix" corset off ebay,
and made a leather panel, attached on one side and it
snaps to the other side, all of the individual straps
and buckles are attached to the panel.
So all I do is get on the corset, hook up the eyes and
then snap the panel across, no buckling required!
Cheers and good luck!

Thankyou very much.
Unfortunately, there is no set pattern for it. I
drafted the entire thing. When I get a spare moment,
I'd be happy to write up the instructions for drafting
it, as I did use bodice pieces from another pattern to
help me out. But I have to warn you: it's not easy.
