According to the seller (who incidentally lives in the same state that
I do) it was the US/Canada format, which is why I was quite surprised
to see an Aussie bidder taking the price up so high. Maybe the other
bidder has a friend who's a big fan who lives in North America....

Anyway, my search continues...

Hi, I just finished bidding on a copy of this movie out on eBay. I
didn't win. :( The person bidding against me was from Australia and
took the price up to $45.

Just goes to show that there are still some pretty active Paul
Mercurio fans out there in the world.

However, I did happen to purchase a copy of Kick and I'm very excited
by the prospect of seeing Paul dance yet again.

Cat, Thanks for all the work you do!!  Paul's my girlls' hero, b/c he turned down Hollywood for family.  In the long run, it was the smart move, IMO.

I read he was considering redoing his pad...maybe he could get a production company to cover it for a tv special.  Jus' thinkin'!

I have on the way to me (from 2 different locales) copies of Strictly Ballroom and Exit to Eden.  :o)  I'm sure Netflix will be happy to receive their movie back.  LOL

I figured instead of lurking in silence I would actually introduce myself.  My name is Sarah, I live in Virginia, and I am a recently professed fan of Paul's.  :o)

Unbeknownst to me, I was familiar with Paul through Exit to Eden (although I've seen it so many years ago that I don't remember much of it except finding the humour in it).  However, I did not become a fan until just a couple weeks ago when I joined Netflix and chose Strictly Ballroom.  I haven't returned it yet.  ::blushes::  I love the dancing, the music and the "ugly duckling" storyline - I'm a sucker for those.  It is being added to my DVD library very soon (and then Netflix can have their copy back).

I was pleased to find Paul Mercurio Online with a link to the mailing list.  I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.  :o)

~Sarah

PS... anyone know an inexpensive way to obtain Exit to Eden on DVD?

Thanks for the reply what a bummer, would be cool if he could come
and be a guest judge or even join a season here. Then I would watch
our ABC version of DWTS... My cousin lives in Brisbane I am going to
see if he can get and send me copies...
thanks again,
Christelle

Unfortunately, "ABC" here is not the same as "The ABC" in Australia.  There it's the Australian Broadcasting Service.  I haven't seen a single episode of DWTS.  :(

There isn't much activity on this group, but I posted awhile ago that
I had found SB at my Blockbuster and bought it.

I am helping my best friend take care of her elderly dad, and since
she was out of town over this weekend, I was the designated
"dad-sitter." Anyway, I brought SB with me to her house, and after I
put her dad to bed, I was kinda down. So I put SB in the DVD player
in the living room, and just brought my spirits up again ~ goddess, I
love this movie, no matter how many times I see it.

So I thought this morning I'd just post how much SB has meant to my
life. I am so glad to have accidently watched it on cable 7 years
ago, and can watch it over and over and never tire of it.

OKay, thats all from Portland, Oregon, USA.

Can someone direct me to Paul's website/blog? I'd love to tell him
how much this movie has been able to lift me up.

Patricia

Paul Mercurio Dancer/actor/judge/brewer/food lover

PAUL, 42, is applying his creative streak to Victoria-orientated travel and cooking program The Food Trail (Seven, Saturdays, 5.30pm), launching his own beer brews and, soon, a smoked brisket meat product. He is also a judge on Seven's Dancing with the Stars. He was first a dancer -- with Sydney Dance Company and in Baz Luhrmann's movie, Strictly Ballroom. He lives in Melbourne with his wife, Andrea, also a former dancer, and daughters, Elise, 16, Emily, 14, and Erin, 10.

"I was about eight months in the 1963 photo (far right) with Dad (actor Gus) and my sister, Connie, in Swan Hill. Dad sent us to Perth in 1969 and he stayed in Melbourne. Mum (Jean) still lives in the house where I was visiting her, my brothers, Joseph and Michael, and Connie (left). I like the shot (right) of Andrea and I for Greg Barrett's book Danceshots. It has a yin yang quality that encapsulates our relationship."

Sydney Herald Sun

But where's the lamp post? IF you tell expert chef Andrew Blake his restaurant's food looks like a dog's breakfast, he would probably take it as a compliment. The Melbourne restaurateur's latest venture is catering to both man and his best friend, with My Dog Cafe opening tomorrow at Station Pier in Port Melbourne.

While some cafes might offer a bowl of water for puffed-out pooches, Mr Blake's waterfront cafe will have a whole menu of bone-ified, chef-prepared food for four-legged friends. On the menu are doggie delicacies such as oxtail ragout, beef osso bucco, slow-cooked lamb shanks with vegies and chicken breast with tofu. Humans are treated to standard cafe fare.

"This is a little bit different," Blake said. "The customers are generally a lot more appreciative -- you don't hear more than a yelp from them. "I wouldn't be opening a stand-alone cafe that was going to compete with the 25,000 other cafes in Melbourne but this one is very unique and special."

Because of laws designed to keep dogs and restaurants apart, some special design was needed to ensure dogs and people were comfortable at the cafe, including a waiter in charge of dog security. The dogs can sit under tables, lie on dog beds placed next to each table or be tethered to a rail with water views.

The opening party tomorrow is invitation-only and some celebrities' canines will be chowing down. Tara Moss, Sigrid Thornton, Paul Mercurio, Suzie Wilks and Lauren and Patti Newton are expected to dine with their dogs.

The Food Trail and a judge on Dancing With the Stars Channel 7

MONDAY
AM Conduct a three-hour photo shoot with my dad, Gus, as the model for the label on my new beer called Father's Favourite Ale . . . hence Dad on the label.

PM Long lunch with Dad at Kyhatt's Hotel, Brighton, where we did the photo shoot. I walk home, about an hour, to get a bit of exercise.

TUESDAY
AM Have a tai chi lesson. I first practised it in 1983 but let it go for a few years. Now I've rekindled my connection.

PM Interview over lunch with Herald Sun food writer Bob Hart at Tutto Benne. Pick up ingredients in preparation for brewing day tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY
AM Walk the dog for an hour. Met my lovely wife, Andrea, for coffee. It's important to go on ``dates''. And then home to do emails and phone calls.

PM Start brewing Father's Favourite Ale at 1pm, finish at 7pm. My turn to cook dinner. Whack a pork roast in the oven and relax with a cool beer.

THURSDAY
AM Jump on my motorbike and ride to Bendigo. Lunch at the Rifle Brigade Pub Brewery and sample its beers. Just between you and me, mine are better!

PM Ride on to Swan Hill in 37C heat. I was born here so it's good to get back and see if I remember the place. Mind you, I left when I was 3 1/2.

FRIDAY
AM Breakfast with a family friend, then wander off to find the house I used to live in. It's the first time I've seen it since 1975.

PM Run the Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton relay into the main function at the end of the day. Do TV and radio interviews, then lots of photos and autographs. Drop in at a mate's house for a beer and stay for dinner.

SATURDAY
AM Back on the bike for a great ride back to Melbourne -- no stops this time. Haven't had a long ride for ages and I realise how much I miss it.

PM Home in time to attend some of my daughter's 10th birthday party in the arvo -- a quick kiss, a hug and a sing-along before going out to a corporate function in the evening.

SUNDAY
AM Cook pancakes for the bleary-eyed sleepover party kids. Erin, the birthday girl, has Vegemite on hers; can't work that out.

PM Take Andrea and our three girls out to a great yum cha restaurant. I eat everything. The kids eat rice and spring rolls. Catch up on emails, then relax for the rest of the day.

Big names make it a big day

IT was a big day of big names as the Queen's Baton Relay spent its first day on Victoria's watch, if not always in the state. And despite having to run in temperatures in the mid-30s, the only sulky was one tethered to a horse to carry the baton.

The day started for the baton with a balloon ride over the Murray before taking the ground route over the bridge to New South Wales. Former Olympian Bryan Wilson, who won a shooting gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, had the honour of taking the baton on to the balloon. Wilson, of Mildura, said he was relieved when it was over so he could enjoy the celebrations accompanying the relay.

"When I was selected for the relay I had to start trying to lose weight and get fit," he said. "But to go up in the balloon I actually needed more weight to hold it down."

Kevin Hogarth, who took home a bronze medal in boxing from the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, said it was an honour to carry the baton in his home area after the locals had supported his career. "I was at the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff when it all started, and it was nothing like this," he said.

Nyah residents saw world record-holding horse and sulky driver Kerryn Manning take the baton around the track.
Nominated by Harness Racing Victoria, Manning has the record for the most career meet wins for a woman, with more than 2000 to her name. "I was lucky enough to be chosen but it was a bit of a surprise when they rang to tell me," she said.
Local heroes who often give without acknowledgment also had their time in the sun.

Anne Daniel was nominated by her husband John for her work with Swan Hill Diabetes Support Group and Juvenile Diabetes Support Group. "She does loads," he said. "That's what it's all about."

Colin Bull was nominated by his wife, Marg, for volunteer work he does, because, as she said, he was too modest to ever tell anyone. "She must have done a good job tidying me up," Mr Bull said. "But I just seem to draw the short straw and end up chairman of everything."

By the end of the day the baton was dancing in the hands of Paul Mercurio, who ran a leg to his birthplace in Swan Hill.
The Strictly Ballroom star told cheering crowds he was thrilled to be back home. "I always remember where I am from, and that's Swan Hill," he said.

Today the baton odyssey continues south to Bendigo.

Strictly Kitchen

Paul Mercurio swaps his dancing shoes for a chef's hat, writes Bob Hart

FOR a time, nimble, affable Paul Mercurio had the world at his feet. He had emerged in the 1990s from a dance career to star in Baz Luhrmann's enchanting film, Strictly Ballroom. But by the end of that decade, Mercurio had abandoned Hollywood and returned to Melbourne with his ex-dancer wife, Andrea, and their three daughters.

The family had to eat, so as well as exploring acting opportunities, he worked as a labourer, sold computers, taught ballet and occasionally cooked in restaurants. And it was cooking that consolidated Mercurio's passion for food which, as his career gathers fresh momentum, has led to his hosting The Food Trail, a charming series that begins on Seven at 5.30pm today.

Q: How did you fall into a cooking show?
A:By chance. I heard Seven had plans. I inquired and discovered a host had already been identified. But just before the pilot was to be shot, the host, a chef, dropped out. I dropped in.

Q: What's the concept?
A:For the first series we break the state into six areas and I explore each of them. I meet food producers and we collect the produce, take it to the kitchen of a noted local chef and we cook it together.

Q: Sounds simple. It also sounds like the Rick Stein approach in the UK.
A:Rick Stein is my food hero. I also borrow a bit from Antonio Carluccio.

Q:Most local attempts at food shows are dreadful, but yours works very well.
A:I was worried about cooking alongside real chefs, but I found that if I stuck to my home cooking it worked. Most were helpful and a couple liked what I cooked.

Q: What was the best thing?
A:Abalone at Chris's Beacon Point. I sliced it, marinated it in sesame oil, quickly fried it, made a Japanese salad . . .

Q: Are chefs happy to share their stoves?
A:A few of them expect me to dance around their kitchens, which I don't. But I am 42 now, I have cooked since I was a kid and I have wanted to do a show like this for the past 15 years.

Q: You reveal your beer obsession in the first show. Does beer rear its ugly head again?
A:Ugly head? You mean beautiful, fine, laced, bubbly head, surely. But yes, I use a Belgian beer when I cook a seafood beer risotto. I love to cook with beer -- lamb shanks in stout with mint and onions or a rabbit casserole done with stout, prunes and onions . . .

Q: Where did this obsession come from?
A:From being a dancer. I would drink Coopers at the end of each performance -- I have never liked commercial beers. But on dancer's wages, it was expensive, so for my first wedding anniversary, my wife gave me a Coopers home-brew kit. We've been married for 18 years now and I am still brewing beer.

Q: And the cooking -- how did that start?
A:My first job was as a cook at a Red Rooster. I was 15 and it wasn't very hard, but I did it anyway. And when I came to Melbourne to put myself through the Australian Ballet School, I took a job cooking in Taco Bill's.

Q: Fortunately, nothing you learned in either place seems to have stuck . . .
A:That's harsh. But to be an actor in this country, you have to have your fingers in lots of pies. You will have down-time. So I can do a TV series like this or Dancing With the Stars, act in a feature film, appear in a TV mini-series and still have time for cooking and brewing.

Q: And your favourite food?
A:Beer. The Germans class it as a food and so do I. You don't need to have anything else with it. Except maybe another beer . . .

It's also available on half.com, which is part of ebay anyway, lol. This description didn't quite fit the movie, but I enjoyed it a lot. Always good to see so much of Paul, of course. It isn't easy to make those overalls look good! ;)

Meant to send two!  Here's the other one:

A beer for dad, on the face of it.

RETIRED boxer, referee and actor Gus Mercurio has just had an early Father's Day pressie any dad would be proud of.
Strictly Ballroom star and son of Gus, Paul Mercurio has somehow found time between judging dance routines on the small screen to keep his hobby-turned-business into a profitable sideline.

He's been developing a beer, which will be on the market next month, and he's called it Father's Favourite Ale.

Now if that doesn't bring a smile to old Gus, nothing will, especially when he realises the label shows part of his chin and his 77-year-old battered hand, naturally holding a beer.

Mercurio Jr told us the new drop had nothing to do with fruit, saying he'd "learned his lesson" after his peach-flavoured brew.

"This one is still in the works, but it will be an American-style amber ale," Paul told The Eye.

Mercurio rising to foodie challenge

THOUGH he doesn't share the same international culinary reputation as Jamie Oliver, Paul Mercurio is nevertheless something of a food expert.

Better known for his role as a judge on Seven's smash hit Dancing With the Stars and a starring role in the hit Aussie movie Strictly Ballroom, Mercurio is into food and beer in a big way.

In December 2004, he launched his own gourmet beer label through his business Mercs Own Brewing Company, and released two brews -- a German ale and US-style amber ale. This year, there will be another new brew.

"And I've always enjoyed cooking with beer -- everything from risotto to ice cream," Mercurio says. "And I do a sensational lamb shanks and an even better osso bucco."

On Saturday, Mercurio stars in his own show, The Food Trail, in which he travels Victoria collecting local produce, meeting some of our leading chefs and preparing some mouth-watering delights.

"We travel through Daylesford, south-west Victoria, the Mallee/Wimmera, the Murray -- everywhere," he says. "We sailed aboard a crayfish boat and rounded up sheep on a trail bike."

Mercurio was only 15 when he ran a Red Rooster store in Swan Hill. "I guess that's where I first got my love of cooking, and it's stayed with me ever since," he says.

Through the stylish six-part series, Mercurio works with such wellknown chefs as Stefano de Pieri and Alla Tasker, swapping food tips and recipes. "The series was great fun to make and I hope viewers enjoy it," he says.

I bought this movie a few years ago, and it will play on your computer with minor adjustments.  On newer computers, like my laptop, I don't have to do anything to play the dvd.

I've looked and looked--if anyone knows if an Australian service where I can list all of Paul's programs by the week (at least), I'd love to know about it.  All the services out there are have very limited search capabilities.

Thanks!

Note--there is a lot of news for Paul this month!  I'll be sending it out in bits over the next few days.  You can also keep an eye on the front page of the site.

-----------

LURCHING through 5m waves on a crayfish boat out of Port Fairy was much more adventurous than Paul Mercurio had imagined when shooting stories for his new food and travel series.

"I was quite nervous because I can't say I have sea legs," he said.

"We met at 6.30am and it was beautiful weather in the harbour. But 15 minutes out it completely changed and there was this big swell. I had to trust the operator of the boat and I felt safe most of the time, except he had to drop the cray pots right in by the breakers."

The actor and dancer, best known for the 1992 film Strictly Ballroom and as a judge on Channel 7's Dancing with the Stars series, has long held an ambition to be a TV chef. "I'm only a home cook and don't have the professional training, but I love it," Paul said.

Needless to say, he jumped at the chance to host The Food Trail, a six-part half-hour Channel 7 series in which he travels through Victoria, meeting well-known chefs and collecting and cooking regional produce.

He has been campaigning for years to host a show about his other passion, beer, and has had talks with all the free-to-air networks. So far, nothing has eventuated, but he sneaks in three recipes using beer in The Food Trail.

In the first episode, which screens on Saturday, Paul visits a Woodend brewery, where he explains the process of adding hops and tastes a few of the products. In the same episode, he visits a Hanging Rock winery, an olive farm at Kyneton, Meredith Dairy and the organic Fernleigh Farm near Bullarto. He searches for wild mushrooms near Daylesford and cooks at the Lake House boutique hotel with chef Alla Wolf-Tasker. Paul said he was "hoping like heck" the show was a success and went to a second series. He is keen to take the concept to other Australian states and overseas.

Meanwhile, he is concentrating on his gourmet beer label, Mercs Own Brewing Co, and plans to release two new brews this year -- a German-style ale and a US-style amber ale. He brews the prototypes.

"I have a small brewery system at home in the garage," he said. Friends of Paul and his wife of 18 years, Andrea, are likely to be invited to their home for a tasting.

Paul, 42, is also looking forward to the new series of Dancing with the Stars, which starts on February 21. But it is the beer and food aspect of his career that interests him the most. He said there was not enough work for most actors in Australia. To support their three daughters, Elise, 16, Emily, 14, and Erin, 10, he has worked as a builder's labourer, restaurant cook, computer salesman and ballet teacher.

"You do what you have to do," he said. "I'd like to act more, but there isn't the work. So if I can make some money out of beer and food, that's great."
