Re: Which is closer?

Hi Cat,
I was wondering if "SB" was the closest but I did think he sounded,
they all sounded, a bit heavy on the nasal sound. Is that a regional
thing? I mean, that was supposed to be the "Southern Districts" so I
was thinking maybe just like Americans, they have some regional
differences but I really don't know too much except I did see a
televison documentary about Australia a couple of years ago that
inroduced me to an aristocratic Australian accent. On the Harry
Potter yahoo site, we had a very long and in-depth discussion about
the characters, their accents and how the two related (or didn't as
it were...) I am ashamed to admit that it took me a while to place
Paul in "Joseph." I guess there was a fair amount of cognitive
dissonance for me. He looked so completely that character, and they
did make Joseph seem larger than life. I kept thinking where is he
from? I finally had to close my eyes and just listen. Then I
realized "Aussie." But I am still clueless as to how to place
the "Asenath" character. Loved her accent, just can't place it. I
will be so embarrassed if she turns out to be an Aussie as well.
And so it goes.
Thanks Cat,
JenD

Hi Jen, and welcome! Paul was doing accents in both EtoE and Joseph. Strictly Ballroom is more or less his natural voice. Maybe a teensy bit less nasal. Cat ...

There are definitely regional Aussie accents, just like in the States. I think one of the mildest is Sydney, and they become more nasal toward the west coast....
