When I first came across this so-called "WORKING DRAFT DECEMBER 22, 1980" script, a week or so ago, I was skeptical.  Thus, I didn't pass the information on.  I'm still skeptical.  However, I don't want this "news" to pass  without our coverage of it.  Judge for yourself.

So... here it is.  Follow the links.

Apple joins the Twitterverse with clever Blade Runner easter egg

CNet's Candace Lombardi reports that Apple has officially jumped on the Twitter bandwagon. Last Friday the maiden tweet for a seemingly official Apple twitter account @iTunesTrailers  was posted.

The account's bio jives with what you'd expect from Apple:

Official trailers and theatrical content updates to Apple iTunes Trailers, Apple TV, and for the iPhone/iPod touch on Twitter.

Followers of @iTunesTrailers were initially skeptical of the real-looking because of the proliferation of fake Twitter accounts/Twitterjacking.

The inaugural tweet, a tribute to Blade Runner, read:

This announcement is brought to you by the Shimato-Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World.

According to Encyclopedia Blade Runner the passage was displayed on the Colonization Program's blimp which is seen hovering over LA, circa 2019, blasting old-world propaganda, ie.

A new life awaits you in the Off-World colonies. The chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure. New climate, recreational facilities…absolutely free. Use your new friend as a personal body servant or a tireless field hand, the custom tailored genetically engineered humanoid replicant designed especially for your needs. So come on America, let's put our team up there…"

Students of the film should know that the line Apple chose, was only displayed on the blimp in the The Workprint and The Director's Cut editions. Shimato means "I have made an error" in Japanese.

Subsequent tweets have been more in line with what you'd expect from Apple. For example:

Just posted- Exclusive clip: Sunshine Cleaning. In US theaters today.

Be on the lookout for an exclusive clip for a popular independent film posting in a few hours. Let the guessing begin…

The account was later confirmed as genuine Apple when a Trailers on Twitter link appeared on the top of the Apple trailers page.

Paul's Brain Trust screening of Blade Runner has been nominated for a Rondo Award in the category of Best Fan Event!

The Rondo Awards  are presented by fans, for the fans, so get on over there to the official site and cast your ballots for all the categories - but be sure to vote for our screening when you get to category #17! All you have to do is copy the ballot (available here ) and e-mail it to taraco@...  with your selections. You have until MIDNIGHT on March 21st to cast your ballots, so waste not a moment!

And it goes without saying that everyone at The Brain Trust appreciates your support! Speaking of which, we want you all to know that our friend Paul Prischman and his family are doing well, and they'd like YOU to know that they greatly appreciate all your kind words and best wishes. The Digital Bits  are planning another big charity auction to support the Trust, and possibly another live event as well, so watch for more on all that in the coming weeks.

BBC Radio Three is scheduled to broadcast a program entitled "Bring Me The Head of Philip K Dick." The website summarizes the episode:

"Gregory Whitehead's dark, surreal and satirical drama, set in contemporary America, centres on a deadly futuristic weapon in the shape of the android head of science-fiction writer Philip K Dick. Invented by a shadowy research unit inside the Pentagon, the head - which believes it actually is Dick himself - is wreaking havoc on society and must be stopped before it finds its body."

The program was aired on Sunday March 8, at 20:00 hours.  You can stream the audio until March 15 right here .  Anyone know how we could get a podcast of this?

If this sounds good, the character names are even better:

Cryptica Scriptura ...... Elizabeth Aspenlieder
Cathy Nebula ...... Karen Beaumont
Reverend Darkleigh ...... George Bergen
Nancy Robinson ...... Hilary Deely
Philip Dooley ...... Richard Jackson
Tiffany Splenda ...... Karen Lee
The Potato Man ...... Jon Swan
Perky Pat ...... Anne Undeland
The Patriot ...... Gregory Whitehead
Written, produced and directed by Gregory Whitehead.

Music by Laura Wiens and Nick Zammuto.
Poem by Jon Swan.

On this day in History March 2nd T-Shirt - Philip K. Dick

Mar 2nd 2009

Tryingout a new idea on Tcritic doing a daily t-shirt connected to ahistorical happening of the day, let me know what you think.

For March 2nd, i wanted to recognize the death of Philip K. Dick, avid science fiction author & explorer of the psyche.

The Dreaming Of Androids T-Shirt is a charming reference to one of Philip K. Dick's renowned novel, "DoAndroids Dream of Electric Sheep?" which was the basis for the classicmovie Blade Runner.

I've been a fan of Blade Runner since I first saw.  It had cool visuals, but it also had ethical and moral questions: what does it mean to be human, and who gets to make that decision? There's definite role-playing potential there, and Jonathan Hicks has chosen to explore it using Farsight Games' SKETCH system. This unofficial 16-page free PDF, which includes the SKETCH system, presumes the players and gamemaster have seen the movie and are acquainted with the setting. Being familiar with the novel it's based on, Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, is also recommended, and I assume knowing Dick's themes and tone of writing would be helpful as well.

As with all SKETCH settings it's intended for one-shot games, so it doesn't give any more than what you need: suggested character types, equipment lists, and some adventure hooks. If you try to look at this as a fully-formed Blade Runner RPG, you will be sorely disappointed. It's intended as an example of what can be done with the SKETCH system, how a gamemaster can use the format and simple rules to put together a game based on an existing film property. In that, it succeeds.

Future Imperfect: Philip K. Dick at the Movies

by Jason Vest.   With Foreword by Phillip Lopate

Editorial Reviews

Review
"Among the films adapted from novels and stories by Philip K. Dick are Blade Runner, Confessions d'un Barjo, Minority Report, and most recently Richard Linklatter's A Scanner Darkly. Vest discusses these interpretations of Dick's sci-fi ruminations on the paths of human nature in an increasingly technological world; more often then not, he points out, those paths lead to paranoia and other dark states of mind. Eight substantial criticisms illustrate how and how well each film expands, extrapolates and departs from Dick's singular vision."--Reference and Research Book News
