The Young Hollywood Awards hosted by of all people, David Alan
Grier, was recently aired on the network formerly known for airing
mostly classic films, being AMC (American Movie Classics). It aired
several times during the day with more airings later that week.
This award show itself is vastly different than most, being that the
presenters, Nominees and audience know well in advance who will win.
Nikki's award was intitled simply "The One to Watch." The presenter
for her award was Leelee Sobieski, star of "Joy Ride" and numerous
other recent hollywood titles. After a few kind words from Leelee,
we saw a package talking about Nikki, where she talked about her
childhood, her upcoming 15th birthday and writing the script for
Thirteen. She also commented on the way the producers scheduled her
most intense scenes on screen for her first day of filming. To close
she made clear she intends to continue acting, and plans to direct
and produce in the near future. Although she doesn't want to be a
director before she turns 16.
She then took the stage and excepted her award, thanking the cast
and crew of the film and pointing out again her special relationship
with Catherine Hardwicke. The rest of the show couldn't hold my
interest though and after Nikki's segment I tuned out.
She appeared to me to be a very gracious and real person, with a
nice sense of humor. Someone I'd very much like to meet. Well that's
my full report from the couch in front of the TV.
