It is the oldest library in continuous use west of the Mississippi. It was established by Colonel Benjamen Lewis' family in 1866 after his death. Colonel Lewis had offered a $6,000 reward for Bloody Bill Anderson, the notorious bushwacker, dead or alive. A week after the Battle of Blasgow, Anderson and his men broke into Lewis' mansion and beat and tortured Lewis while holding him for a $6,000 ransom. After collecting $1,000 from Lewis and $5,000 from Mrs. James Thomson, they left. Mr. Lewis died of his wounds a year later leaving an estate of over $800,000. In his will he set aside $10,000 for the establishment of a library. His widow and sons built the library for $26,000 and left the $10,000 as an endowment which is still active today. The second floor was designed as a reading and library room. The ground floor was built as a lecture hall. When Lewis College opened in 1867, this building was the only building to serve the 140 students enrolled. Lewis Library continues to serve Glasgow well as the library Mr. Lewis felt it so badly needed." *** |
