12/21/09 SEAN PRATT PRESENTS HIS WEEKLY ARTICLE ON THE BUSINESS OF THE BIZ
Actor Marketing vs. Actor Advertising – Knowing Which is Which and Why it’s
Important by Sean Pratt
All too often actors confuse these two terms, not least because the people
teaching them don’t understand the difference either.
For most actors the journey they take in understanding what “marketing” or
“advertising” means in relation to the BIZ will be a long and arduous one.
There are plenty of, “Marketing for the Actor” classes to take out there,
but most will leave you feeling that you have only been given a small piece of
the overall picture or, worse, more confused about just what exactly these terms
mean. But here are some concrete definitions that you can use in your efforts
to understand the differences between marketing and advertising.

"That's a Wrap"
What does it take to have fearless auditions? How can you get the part if you don't know how you're performing on camera? Do you ever forget your lines when you feel nervous?
There are strategies you can employ to audition and not feel anxious. I mastered these tactics, and I can teach you how to use them, too.
When I asked my students what they most wanted to know, the top questions were:
1. How can I stop feeling nervous at my auditions?
2. What makes me go blank on lines when I thought I knew them?
3. How can I figure out what casting directors are looking for?
The answers to these questions and others actors ask will be covered in the next course offered by The Actors Alliance. In the six-week semester starting the week of January 11, 2010, you can practice how to do your best in your auditions every time.
This 18-hour course is a bargain at only $250 if you register before classes start. After January 11, tuition goes up to $275.
Classes are held in Metairie, Covington, and Baton Rouge. Each class will cover what casting directors want so you can audition successfully. Watch yourself auditioning on-camera in each class and master the skills you need to win.
MOVE YOUR ACTING CAREER TO THE NEXT LEVEL!
For more information, contact Veleka Gray at actorsalliance@... or at 504-812-3379.
~ RECENT COMMENDATIONS FROM STUDENTS ~

-- Jennifer Caplan, Metairie
"In this and my previous sessions with The Actors Alliance I have learned more about acting and being believable than any other classes I've taken."
-- Alyssa Wininger, Destrehan
"The course covered about everything that I needed to know. Going in front of the camera, I got to see myself acting."
-- Greg Oden, Baton Rouge
"The course offers great training, feedback, and experience needed to act for speaking roles. The filming prepared me for what to expect on a set."
-- Rhonda Laizer, Metairie
"It was pretty awesome!"
-- Angelina Davenport, Kenner
"It was very well thought out."
-- Ethan McIntyre, Springfield

~ TEACHER CREDENTIALS ~
Veleka Gray is a professional actress, acting coach, writer, director, and producer with credits in film, television, and Broadway.
As an actress on afternoon television, she set several records. She starred in nine different roles in six soap operas, seven of which were contract roles, more than any other actor in history. And she is the only actress in soap history to play two roles on the same show at the same time that were not related in any way. Her best-remembered parts include Lyla Montgomery on "As the World Turns" and the unusual dual role of Ruby Collins and Dr. Sharon Reaves on "The Young & The Restless."
During the fifteen years she was on daytime, she was also a judge for the National Emmy Awards and is a member of the Academy. For six years she penned a biweekly column for "Soap Opera Digest," wrote feature articles on daytime celebrities for other fan magazines, and sold her first screenplay to Columbia Television. She recently scripted nineteen vignettes for her film "Reunion."
In 2000 Veleka returned to Louisiana and began training all levels of actors to work in film through her school, The Actors Alliance. Starting in August, she returned to acting by playing the title role in "Godmother," an entry in the 2009 48 Hour Film Project. She also played Dr. Souza in "Flag of My Father," Eleanor Cameron in "Flood Streets," Crystal Mortensen in "Reunion," The Nurse in "Television2," and is slated to perform in more features in 2010.
In October she directed both the play "Breakfast" for The People Program in New Orleans and her film "Reunion," which was shot in Covington. She was executive producer of the award-winning short film "Halfway," filmed in January and shown at the New Orleans Film Festival in October. She has several other film projects in development for 2010. She was inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Actor’s Cover Letter – Helping Your Resume Deliver the Best Pitch
Possible by Sean Pratt
A great cover letter tells the reader why you’re contacting them and creates a
sense of anticipation about evaluating your resume.
You would be shocked at how many picture/resumes arrive on the desk of a casting
director, producer, agent, etc., with no cover letter attached. Though it is
inherent in the relationship of the actor to these people that the former is
seeking the attention of the latter, the fact that the actor’s P/R contains no
introduction or even an explanation as to why they are submitting themselves
shows a lack of professionalism, research, and respect. This is why a well
crafted cover letter, backed up by a targeted resume, can make all the
difference as to whether or not you get that interview or audition.

New Federal Grant Allows UNO NIMS to Expand

New Federal Grant Allows for Nims Center Expansion
A recently announced $3 million federal grant will be paired with state funding
to expand the region's sole full service film production facility.
The new federal grant will be combined with a $1.5 million grant from the State
of Louisiana to further develop the Nims Center Studios for Entertainment Arts
in Jefferson Parish. The money will be used to build a 10,000-square-foot sound
stage and an additional office building at the facility.
The expansion of the Nims Center will allow the region to capitalize on
Louisiana's successful film tax incentives program that has put the state on the
cutting edge of film production. The Nims Center has become a hub of film
production and economic activity in the region, providing studio space for major
films, television commercials, and music videos.
"Louisiana is now the number three film-making destination in the country,
behind only Hollywood and New York," says GNO, Inc. President and CEO Michael
Hecht, "and the Nims Center is one of the main reasons why. While the rest of
the country is retrenching, Greater New Orleans continues to expand its
production capacity, positioning our region to be a major film force in the
future."
The design and construction phase of the Nims Center expansion should provide an
additional immediate boost to the region's economy. The Division of Economic
Research at the University of New Orleans reports that the infrastructure
project will generate 400 new jobs and $132 million in private investment.
Nims Center Studios is a division of the University of New Orleans Foundation
and is operated in cooperation with the University of New Orleans, the Louisiana
Governor's Office of Film & Television Development, New Orleans Office of Film &
Video, and Jefferson Parish President's Office. To learn more about the
facility, click here.
###
About Greater New Orleans, Inc.
The GNO, Inc. Mission is to serve as the catalyst for wealth creation in the
Greater New Orleans region. GNO, Inc. will accomplish this by pursuing an
aggressive agenda of business development - marketing the region - and product
development - improving regional business conditions through policy, workforce
and research initiatives.
The GNO, Inc. Vision is for the Greater New Orleans region to fulfill its
potential as one of the best places in the country to grow a company, and raise
a family. The ultimate indication of success for GNO, Inc. will be the presence

A Short Lesson in Graphic Design - Picking the Right Typeface for Your Acting
Resume by Sean Pratt
Though it may seem inconsequential, knowing how to choose the right font is an
important part of creating an eye-catching resume.
Yet another thing they didn’t teach you in acting school is that understanding
the basic concepts of graphic design are a must to creating effective marketing
materials. Since your resume, along with your picture, is one of the most
important pieces of advertising you have, special attention must be given to all
the elements that go into its design; the information you choose to share, its
placement on the page, the possible use of pictures or color, and the typeface
used to make it both eye-catching and readable. Right now, let’s look at this
last element in the context of graphic design.

Actors Singing at the Musical Theatre Audition– Some General Thoughts and
Guidelines for Surviving Your 16 Bars by Sean Pratt
Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when preparing for the singing
portion of your upcoming audition.
For many actors, one of the most stressful moments of the musical audition is
having to sing. Speaking text, sword fighting and even, God forbid, doing mime
work pale in comparison to the stress an actor can have when asked to sing. But
don’t despair. Here is some advice that should not only help you keep from
embarrassing yourself but hopefully land the part.

Actor/Director Dialogue – How to Discern Someone’s Style of Speaking by Sean
Pratt
Understanding the director’s speaking style, as well as your own, will go a
long way to helping you effectively communicate with each other.
Perhaps this has happened to you. You’ve just finished performing your scene
and have gone to the director to get your notes. She says, “Wonderful.
Let’s do it again but this time infuse the scene with the color blue.” And
you’re thinking to yourself, “Is the director crazy? What does that
mean?!” Nothing can be more problematic to the success of a project than when
the director cannot clearly communicate with an actor and vice versa.
Essentially, it boils down to the way each of them speaks and listens. And when
it comes to talking, while you can’t change the director’s way of conveying
her/his ideas to you, you can endeavor to understand what kind of style it is
and adjust your responses accordingly.

Louisiana Seeing Busy Fall Filming Season Greater Baton Rouge Business Report
Article
Louisiana seeing busy fall filming season
With hurricane season ending, film and TV production in south Louisiana is
picking up, and New Orleans is on track to break last year's filming record.
David Simon, creator of The Wire and Homicide: Life on the Street, started
shooting the first season of his HBO series Treme in New Orleans this month, and
actor Jason Statham had a downtown office building bustling with production of a
scene for the action thriller, The Mechanic. They are among at least eight film
and TV projects in the New Orleans area this falland more than a dozen
statewideproviding an end-of-the-year boost after a sluggish summer, says
Sherri McConnell, head of the state film office. "Summer is usually a slow time
for us," McConnell says, citing higher production costs during hurricane season,
which runs June 1 to Nov. 30, as a factor. But this year film industry strikes,
the economy and uncertainty over the future of Louisiana's entertainment tax
credit program were also to blame, she says. Before the state Legislature
approved a 5% boost in incentives for movie and TV makers this spring, the 25%
tax credit was set to drop to 20% in 2010 and 15% in 2012. McConnell says her
office received 25 applications for projects in the first half of 2009, but
since July 1 more than 60 have come in. If all the projects get under way before
the end of the year, the state might reach its filming record of 84 projects,
set last year.

Actor’s Advertising Campaigns – When to Stay in Touch and When to Bang Your
Drum by Sean Pratt
In order to help advance their careers, actors must learn how to use the two
basic methods of publicity.
In the world of marketing, there are two distinct kinds of advertising campaigns
– an “Ongoing Campaign” and a “Promotional Campaign.” These two kinds
of campaigns work hand in hand to create a sense of recognition and momentum for
a business (or an actor) which, in turn, can create opportunities for them to
succeed. But knowing each one’s form and function is crucial to getting the
results you want.

Actor’s Cold Calling – An Essential Research and Development Tool for Your
Career Success by Sean Pratt
Mastering the how-to’s of cold calling lies at the heart of building up your
network.
Here’s a term that strikes fear into many an actor’s heart. But fear not!
Cold calling is just one more job that you, as the secretary of your company,
must do. Most actors dread doing this necessary chore because of a fundamental
misunderstanding of what they’re actually doing and why it’s different from
being an ordinary telemarketer. But once you understand the basics of actor cold
calling, rehearse it and “screw your courage to the sticking place”…to
quote Shakespeare, you’ll find that cold calling is very straightforward.
