In my previous post, I had written that I was convinced that an impostor
had stolen James Phelps's identity. I am working on a novel, to be titled
"The Missing Director Mission," in which Daniel Briggs (Steven Hill, who
had most recently acted out Adam Schiff in "Law & Order") and Rollin Hand
(Martin Landau, who will be involved because his is a good role, not
because he is being offered a good deal) are convinced that the real
James Phelps is being held prisoner somewhere and is very much alive.
They recruit a mission team to help them find and free him, shanghaiing
Ethan Hunt into their quest by having him arrested on false charges of
stealing Tom Cruise's identity. The charges are dropped, but Briggs and
Hand have their leverage over Hunt.
None of the self-destructing recorded messages of missions past will be
used--this is technically an unofficial mission, and the individual
members of the respective teams (more than one mission team is involved
here) are all convinced that they cannot trust the United States
government not to attempt to stop them. For they all remember that it had
been in an official capacity that the Code-Names List Mission had been
compromised before it had even begun.
Psychologist Dr. Thomas Rosenthal (Don Adams in a rare serious role) does
the profiling work-up on the probable targets of the mission, in which he
finds himself getting directly involved even though he is a poor shot
with firearms and unable to lie with any conviction.
