Well I'm not doubting anything!

But you have to admit that there is (justifiable) reason for doubt
in that traditionally MGM Home Entertainment peviously has always
tended to trumpet their DVD announcements well in advance.

Another piece of evidence that could cast a shadow of uncertainty
about the future of the MGM MIDNIGHT MOVIES (Did I get it right this
time?) DVD series is the scheduled August 2004 release of THE NIGHT
STALKER (1972)/THE NIGHT STRANGLER (1973) combo DVD simply packaged
under the MGM Home Entertainment banner while these two back-to-back
Kolchak made-for-tv films certainly would appropriately qualify as
Midnite Movies. Right?

But we'll see!

Frankly I prefer to believe that you're 100% correct on this.

Doesn't self-made entrepreneur Ted Turner currently own the MGM-
United Artists film libraries? And you mean to say that he's
actually selling-out to the Sony Corporation? I certainly hope that
this isn't true since he's done such a great job of film
preservation, restoration and public access (at reasonable prices)
while Sony's trackrecord hasn't been very impressive.

There will definitely be a batch of Midnite Movies this August. The
reason they have not been announced yet is because they are being
handled differently this year. Again, just be patient, but trust me,
they are coming for certain.

It could be that the series is on hold -- or is over -- because MGM
is about to be sold. The company may be purchased by Sony this month.

I'm not trying to make anyone cry, but I thought I'd mention a few
things. How does it look that if you're such a big fan of MGM's
Midnite Movies, you spell it MidniGHT? Have you looked at the front
cover of any of the releases, either on DVD or VHS? Do you think the
way MGM spelled it is a typo they never got around to correcting? Or
do you continually spell the word the way you want it instead of the
way MGM meant to? You want more people to learn about the films, but
you change the spelling and make it harder for people to find this
message board. I bet some of you are the same people who post at
DVDTalk and HTF and STILL spell it Midnight. It makes you look like
you're not well informed if you can't even get the spelling
straight. Why should a person with any common sense do a search
for "Midnight" when they're looking for "Midnite"? Please, people -
pay attention.

You were most probably right in thinking that (for whatever reasons)
the MGM MIDNIGHT MOVIES just aren't being released this year...at
least not in August 2004.

Some people maintain that they're indeed on the way but how can they
be so certain with no advanced announcements or release schedulings
put forward by MGM Home Entertainment at this late date?

If this highly enjoyable DVD series has been discontinued by MGM
than I'd really like to know just what the problem was. Didn't
these classic cult film favourites sell well enough to suit the MGM
executives and decision-makers?

I share your anxiety and concern...and will be very disappointed
indeed if there will be no further MGM MIDNIGHT MOVIES releases.

If you can play R2 PAL then the very nice DVD of "Witchfinder" is at a budget
price now. The print suffers from the said drop in quality on the restored
sections (and some are so brief it would have played better if they had been
left out..as, literaaly, 1 second of somethng in lesser quality is more
distracting than anything else) but is otherwise very nice with some good
extras. Not least of which is an episode of the excellent UK TV show Mondo
Macabre on the Director.

This version also benfits in that the 'topless euro scenes' have been struck
from a near perfect source and unlike the old 'Redemption' VHS they are no
longer of the same lesser quality as the violent scenes.

The dreadful U.S synth version should have beeb burnt years ago!

This has been released in Region 4 (and, I believe, in Region 2)
under the original title "The Witchfinder General". The DVD contains
the cut and uncut version of the film (although, unfortunately, not
the "Conqueror Worm" opening titles). The uncut version has restored
the more sadistic scenes from videotape sources, so whenever it gets
to something extra violent the picture goes blurry, but it is about
the best they could do apparently. The DVD also contains a film clip
by some band that sings a song inspired by the film,

I think that they aren't coming out this year. Seriously, it is
already May 24 and no word on what is being released. Not a peep.
It's only three months away that MGM would be putting these out. No
sign of any Midnite Movies anywhere. Last year I think we knew in
March that Countess Dracula was coming to disc! But the full lineup
wasn't solidified until June, it's true. Still we had early word on
many of the titles.

Well, it's a rights issue, and it's very, very complicated. The
bottom line is that EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE AN ALL-REGION PLAYER.
Hell, Radio Shack and BestBuy were selling an easy-to-convert-to-all-
region players with progressive scan and built in PAL converter for
only $39 recently.

DVD UK was offered more than 30 titles, but selected the 15 I
already mentioned. We wanted to do THE CAT GIRL, too, as a bona fide
British film, but oddly enough, they couldn't obtain full European
rights to that one. Weird, huh?

These are terrific DVDs, with trailers, an hour-long Sam Arkoff
audio piece, and replicas of all the posters. I think they're must-
haves for cult movie fans, and no, DVD UK doesn't pay me to say that
(I wish!)....

Like I said, they are coming for sure in August. A friend on this
board just reminded me that in 2001, the August Midnite Movies were
announced around Memorial Day of that year, so it's still not that
unusual that they have not been announced this year yet. Columbia and
Fox are yet to announce their August schedules, and I'm hoping
they'll be some horror/sci-fi titles there as well.

I don't no what's going on with FORBIDDEN PLANET, but it's probably
just been delayed to another month, unlike the Midnite Movies which
ARE coming in August!

Everybody but everybody is saying that this year's bumper crop of
MGM MIDNIGHT MOVIES is coming this August 2004. Just be patient
about it!

Okay fine. But are you really so sure about this?

Remember we're now talking about (appromimately) three months till
the tentative August release date and surely at this late stage MGM
has decided on exactly just what films will be included in the new
MIDNIGHT MOVIES collections. The company must pretty much have the
respective packaging designs completed and mass pressings should
also have commenced by now as well to meet the August deadline.

All that really remains to be said is that after last year's
excellent sellections (ie. The completions of the Roger Corman
Edgar Allan Poe film series and the Beach Party films) this year's
MGM Midnight Movies collection certainly has a lot to live up to.

Yes I know! THE GHOST IN THE INVISIBLE BIKINI (1966) is still
outstanding and it would certainly made an excellent MIDNIGHT MOVIES
combo DVD disc with THE GHOST OF DRAGSTRIP HOLLOW (1959). This just
goes to show you that there's still gold to be mined in the MGM-
United
Artists film vaults.

Lastly it was announced by an (allegedly) informed source that
Warner Brothers Home Entertainment intends to release this coming
August 2004 a deluxe two-disc set for FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956) but I
can't find any official conformation on this.

Does anyone in this discussion forum know anything definite about it?

Jeff T.

Several months ago I heard from somebody who works there, that Lion's
Gate was panning to turn loose the Arkoff series over here, but nothing
yet. There are various things that have turned up in the U.K. that never
see the light of day over here. I guess the bottom line is what the
video people over here think will make money and how much the owners of
the packages want for them. So I guess for the moment we have to
scrounge where we can *sigh*

I've been acting as a consultant with DVD UK Ltd. on this year's
Arkoff Vault DVD (region 2) releases. Those of you who love the
Midnight Movies DVDs (as I do) should enjoy these, too, and by now,
everybody should have an all-region player, right?

Last year's release of such titles as THE SHE CREATURE, HOW TO MAKE
A MONSTER, WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST, THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED,
(EARTH VS.) THE SPIDER, BLOOD OF DRACULA, and others was met with
great acclaim. In 2004, they are releasing 15 more titles, in three
batches of five each. As with last year's releases, there will be
bonus trailers and probably replicas of each film's original poster.
Sadly, there weren't any true "monster" titles available to choose
from, but most of us AIP fanatics will be more than pleased with
what's planned.

Okay, batch one:

MACHINE GUN KELLY
SHAKE, RATTLE, AND ROCK
VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT
THE FEMALE JUNGLE
ROCK ALL NIGHT

Batch Two:
THE BONNIE PARKER STORY
GIRLS IN PRISON
TEENAGE CAVEMAN
MOTORCYCLE GANG
DRAGSTRIP GIRL

Batch three:

THE COOL AND THE CRAZY
ROADRACERS
SORORITY GIRL
DADDY-O
RUNAWAY DAUGHTERS

I remember reading that the original Night Gallery that aired in the
1970's for sixty minutes was severly cut from its production length
of 90 minutes. In other words, what we watched in the 1970's was
a "butchered" version of Serling's original vision and production.
This really upset Rod Serling.

About a year ago, I talked to the people at V3 Media, the company
that distributed the Twilight Zone limited edition, the complete
series in sequential order. I asked them what projects they were
working on. I was told, the complete series of Night Gallery. I have
not heard anything since.

I believe the THRILLER being handled by A&E Home Video is NOT the American TV
series with Karloff, but a different British TV series from the early 70s
given that A&E specializes in British material. The series was called THRILLER
as
well. It was basically a series of the equivalent to the 90 minute made for
TV thrillers that were billed as MOVIES OF THE WEEK and such on American
networks during the same period. Usually being 70 minutes in length I believe.
Each
episode was a self contained story that usually featured an American actor or
Actress in the lead including the likes of Carol Lynley, Bradford Dillon,
Carrol Baker, Polly Bergen etc. And sometimes a blast from the past British
performer such as Diana Dors. I have yet to see anything pertaining to it on th
A&E
Home Video site. But like I said, considering they handle mostly British
material I am thinking this is probably not the American series with Boris
Karloff.

They're all gone, and even newer messages seem to keep getting
limited to just a few, with anything older becoming inaccessible
(although the number of posts still remains in the group, none of the
messages can be accessed).

hopefully this will mean more TV DVD output by the company.

I wouldn't count on it. Remember that their concern is the money they
can make for the least possible expenditure. I hope I'm wrong. Hell,
they also have the THRILLER series hosted by Boris Karloff which they
only turned loose six episodes of and it's still sitting in the vaults.
But that's the sort of thing that happens when the bean-counters are in
charge or people who really don't give that much of a damn about the
legacy they are in charge of. Just how much money they can make.
