The Baltimore Science Fiction Society puts on Balticon every Memorial
Day weekend - this year's is number 39! It's held in the Wyndham
Hotel in the Inner Harbor (moving out to Hunt Valley next year) and
it's a pretty sizeable to-do, 2000+ attendees as a rule. It's
oriented more towards literature, art, and hard science rather than
media, we'd be lucky to even have a Firefly panel there, but there
will be many like-minded folk gathered, and Keith DeCandido wrote the
novelization of 'Serenity' so we do have a relevant guest. Xenocide,
on the Fireflyfans.net board, is working on arranging a Browncoat
room party at the con.
As for me...check the art show. I volunteered again. You wanna bid on
some art, you gotta see me for a bidder number. I'll be the one
hoarding pistachio nuts. Someone, please stop me before I volunteer
for things...

I'm really surprised there was no screening in the NYC area either. Maybe these
10 places are considered secondary markets and are being tested for a specific
reason? Is anyone an economics/advertising/sales-type person who might shed
some light on this?

Gonzai,
I've purchased and pre-ordered all the Firefly/Serenity swag, but I had no idea
that they kept records of the wish-list stuff. Thanks for the info!

Other ways:
Go over to Amazon - they keep lists of who's interested in what, even if you
can't afford Firefly swag right now, put it all on your wish list. Sign up on
the mailing list for release info for the film and DVD.
If you can - pick up a copy of 'Finding Serenity'. It's a sale, it's official
merch, it's something for Keith to sign at Balticon and it's a cool read,
too.
Wear items with the Firefly and/or Serenity logos in public. Don't have one?
Make one. Jewelry and t-shirts are easy to make yourself these days. People
will ask you what that logo is, and then...they're ready for ensnarement.

We can show that we care about Firefly by:
1.) Let Universal know what you think:
http://www.universalstudios.com/homepage/html/contact_us/
2.) Voting for the trailer:
http://movies.go.com/moviesdynamic/buzznews
While there, you can also see the trailer (and other trailers) and also check
out lots of other Serenity related stuff! (If you sign up for ITunes which is
free with a credit card or Paypal account, you can see the "full screen" version
of the trailer. The trailer itself is not fullscreen, but is much larger than
the other sizes.)
3.) If you use the Internet Movie Database www.imdb.com (which is free and
kinda neat), try to always use the IMDb search feature for Firefly, Serenity,
the actors, Joss, anyone you want to support and have noticed. Under IMDb Pro,
they keep detailed listings of the popularity of each person, movie, etc based
on search patterns. Firefly/Serenity and all attached are doing great so far.
I don't know if the statistics are used in the industry, but if they are they
are great! It couldn't hurt, and it might help. Google keeps similar records,
so I try to run searches there whenever I can.

Ya know, Keith R.A. DeCandido's going to be at Balticon, we could give him

I suggest that we descend on Balticon with a furious vengeance of
cosplay the likes of which the city has never seen. Or something.
Seriously, though, if a lot of us are at Balticon, representing in
costume, they might be like "damn, there ARE browncoats on Sihnon."
And then they might show up. Or we could get together for dinner or
something and draft a letter: "we the undersigned browncoats want some
love."
I know I'm dressing nine browncoats for the masquarade shindig, so if
anyone feels the desire to dress up, they certainly won't be alone.
Pleasant side effect is that if people see a lot of people in similar
costumes wandering around, they'll ask us what fandom we're in. And
that there is a way to get freethinking citizens of the 'verse to join up.

Maybe we can ask Serenity_leader what's going on? I'm sure the

I just saw Gonzai's post on the Browncoats board (I'm spring_violet
over there) and though I'd join up.
I'm new to the Firefly fold. My husband and I don't watch much TV and
missed the show when it was on the air. However friends of ours have
been talking it up since it started, and we borrowed their DVDs. We
were totally hooked after the second episode.
I'm terribly, terribly disappointed that Joss isn't going to be at
Wizard World. I going anyway, as it's in my backyard, but instead of
making a weekend of it I may only spend a day there.

I talked with some friends who used to go to Wizard World - one of
the primary reasons they stopped was that WW wouldn't say who was
coming and didn't answer e-mails/questions. So I'm more inclined to
rely on what's on the official Serenity boards, and they still have

I have shown the trailer to 5 so far, three of which would love to see the movie
when it comes out. You are right that the trailer is lacking in some parts, but
you know there will be at least one other trailer released prior to the opening
day. Keep the faith, and keep up the good work with spreading the news.

Hi Rita,
Folks are moving away from Meetups.com because they're going to start
charging for their services :( So a lot of Browncoats are organizing
elsewhere.
I figure NYC and DC would both be tough in terms of logistics and
expense, but I doubt it has anything to do with having Joss & co
appear. I just hope Joss brings a bunch of BDHs to Philly!

I assume that the problem with screenings on the Mid-East coast is the
expense of flying the actors and Joss over here and the time it takes
to set up such screenings. Also, I suspect that New York City was too
expensive or red-tape filled to set up quickly. Just a thought.
How about going to Meetups.com and set up FireFly groups. I bet there
are other folks who are not aware of the Serenity website who would
love to meet.
Hi, I just joined the Brown Coats and thought it would be fun to join
this board as well. I live in the Washington, D.C. area (Maryland
side). My family is really looking forward to the movie. The trailer
rocks!
I can understand not doing a screening in DC or Baltimore, much as it
pains me; but it's really weird that there's nothing in Philly or New
York. How do they skip NYC?
WW Philly is a start though, and we can always have our own parties ;)
Gonzai
This is a nice start. :) It is unfortunate that Universal does not
see the need to host any gatherings or pre-screening of the trailer in
our neck of the woods. While PA is not that far away (compared to the
West Coast), more cast appearances or activities could be held in our
more local region.
Best of luck with the forum.
