What: Owning the "Pitch": How Copyright, Misappropriation and
Contracts Affect Creative Ideas
When: Wednesday, March 4, 2009, 3-4:30 p.m.
Where: University of Maine School of Law, Portland, Moot Court Room
Fee: Admission is free unless seeking CLE credit, call for details
Details: This seminar explores legal issues raised when ideas are
presented to a potential client or business partner. It covers
situations such as pitching an idea for a new commercial or
advertising campaign; a video or television show; a political
strategy; a new business; a website design; and related creative
projects that may or may not be shopped to multiple clients or put out
to bid to multiple producers.
Copyright law does not extend to ideas or concepts, and if patent and
trade secret do not apply, how does one protect the "Pitch"? The law
of misappropriation of ideas and contract law might offer some
protection in certain circumstances. We will explore these
circumstances and legal theories, as well as practical tips in this
area, with Peter Guffin, an intellectual property lawyer and partner
at Pierce Atwood in Portland.
This seminar is hosted by the Center for Law & Innovation at the
University of Maine School of Law. It is free of charge (except for
attorneys seeking CLE credits) and open to the public, but seating is
limited. We encourage attendance by anyone engaged in a creative
enterprise where ideas, experience and know-how are the currency. This
is not a seminar about patent law or inventions.
