I'm about to embark on the biggest costume journey I've ever
attempted. I want to make a ranger, orc, and Frodo costume by next
Halloween for myself and my two brothers. I want the costumes to be as
accurate as possible especially the ranger. I need resources!
Pictures, patterns, dimensions for armor, anything!
Dear Ryan,
There's a German costuming group which portrays the Ithilien rangers
of Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. They have a website
and a forum, too. The different parts of an general Dunadan ranger
costume are descriped there very precisely: http://dunedain-germany.de/
Unfortunately, the site and forum are in German. But as being member of
this group and having an account at cosplay.com to present my
costumes, I've written a description of my Dunadan ranger costume in
English: http://www.cosplay.com/costume/178744/
I hope that this helps you to create your ranger costume. Christmassy
greetings from Germany!
Mohmoh
I had been playing around with the idea to doing the Ithilien Ranger
for the World Cyber Game -Asian Championship event (occuring every
August and we usually pop by in Costume on the 2nd last day) here
since early this year but yet to start on it properly due to other
costume/armor commitments.
So your write-up and photos will be most useful in my attempt to make
one for myself later next year especially in possible fabric choices
(looking for certain fabrics here can be a pain in the rear
sometimes; and yet we got a lot of cloths wholesellers =__= )

nice, nice, nice! I like how the group shot shows the variations on
the outfit, all go together but don't look like carbon copies.

They do indeed have some nice ideas...I've been working on a
Dunedain-based costume that I've been wearing to TRF, Scarborough
(Tx) and Colorado Rennies for the last two or three years. Most
recently I've made a sword scabbard and 3 point suspension system for
my Jody Samson sword and will soon be starting on my wife's.
On my costume, I've taken a few liberties as I'm creating a character
"Tillian" complete with his own history and not a specific
reproduction from the movies. He does borrow heavily from designs in
the movie Aragorn's outfit obviously and items such as trim from
Theodan's costume incorporated into his belt design... along with a
heavy dose of Celtic design work. Dunedain Rangers were a roaming
folk and I figure their kit would have been very unique given each
characters travelings and acquisitions along the way.
Good luck with yours Ryan.

Mohmoh,
I was reading your Ranger costume description, and would like to know if your
cloak/cape is a half circle? It says "semi circle", so I wondered if it was half
or less for the pattern? If it's less than a half circle, can you tell me how to
make the shape correctly? I make my capes half circle, and they are always
falling to the front and getting in my way.
Thank you!

Dear Cat,
the cloak is exactly a half circle. The neckline is not as big as you would make
it normally, it's smaller. The front opening including the neckline is more or
less shaped like a U. ADDITIONALLY, darts are added at the shoulder to get the
front opening shiftet more to the back. It's difficult to explain, because the
darts were draped at a dress form.

Thank you so much for that insight! I have been trying to figure out how to make
it hang better. I'll have to play around with it and try adding darts. I have a
cloak in the works right now, and was stuck at trying to figure out the neck
issue.

I've been working on a cloak too and I had put some darts into the shoulders
because it seemed to make it hang better. I'm rather relieved that I didn't do
something "against canon". It really made a difference in how the cloak drapes.

translation is complete.

Just wanted to tell you that the description on our homepage to make the Ranger
costumed is complete (thanks to alleycatscratch for giving the permission to use
some of your photos).
Unfortunately, the description is in German only, but the English translation is
done and will be available on the homepage in the course of the coming weeks. If
that happens, I'll let you know.
That is soooooooooooo wonderful. Yummy. It's a great example of how
sharing research allows everyone to benefit and get more and more
details right... and have great guides like this be the result.
Will get it linked in as soon as I can. I've sooooooooooo gota get
the software issue handled so that we can update. AGGGGGGGGGGGGG.
Outstanding! I was just looking at your gallery and your group is incredible!
Well done, Ranger!

Wunderbahr! Sehr gut! (That's about the extent of my Deutch on this fine,
sunny morning.) You really did the research and it shows. Can't wait to read
the English translation.
