Re: [LR_Cos] bow

<<For the archer, Legolas shoots a long recurve and Aragorn shoots a flat longbow. Since they are men I would say that a working bow for them would be in the 60 - 80 pound range.>>

Actually, it looks like Legolas shoots a longbow with reflex bend through the handle. Or..and english longbow with recurve tips. The poundage sounds right. I shoot a #45 (poundage for those of you who don't speak archery-speak:) longbow that is heavily stacked.

<<
Be aware that most of these bows are made from laminated wood as 'self-wood' bows, like the kind Legolas appears to have, stack very heavily, i.e., have a faster buildup of the power needed to draw them the further back you pull the string. Also Legolas' bow appears to be round, which completely baffles me. >>

It IS round, which is completely baffling as that type of bow is not nearly as strong as a flat-bow. I've never seen anyone shoot a bow like that. next time I get the chance to talk with the folks at WETA, that is the question I plan to ask.

<<You would have to have a hell of a set of calluses for the string to not take the skin off your fingers at that weight. We can assume that Legolas and Aragorn do because they have been shooting bows all their lives, but Orlando and Viggo would have not had any fingertips left if those were real working bows at the appropriate drawweights.>>

My guess is that they used a relatively low poundage so as to not hurt their fingers. I do notice that the elven armies that have bows, have gloves on both hands. Both to protect the draw fingers and to protect the hand holding the bow as the bows do not have arrow rests, and are shot off the hand.

This is how I shoot. I wear a glove so the feathers do not dig into my hand as the arrows fly's off the bow.

Glad to see other archers here!

Tammy
