There are two main methods, I think:
1. using a chain stitch with a tambour hook (sort of like a fine
crochet hook, but with a point on the tip, which goes through the
fabric and the previous loop- you need a frame to hold the cloth
taut). If the sequins have big enough holes you and add them one at a
time; else they're strung onto the thread first and one is used per
stitch (or whatever!)
2 using a seed bead to hold the sequin so one goes up through the
hole with the needle, cap[tures the bead, then goes back down through
the hole- the bead keeps the sequin on. Again, a frame or very stiff
fabric is helpful...
