Hi Everyone -

I just heard from a reporter at the GLOBE magazine. The editor there
approved the Joan Crawford story so it'll be in the magazine within a
couple of weeks. Not next week's issue, probably the week after. I
offered ten free signed copies as a reader giveaway so I think that
tipped the scales in my direction too.

I'll be sure to let you all know exactly when the story will appear.

Liz Smith mentioned me and the Joan book in her column today, June 7th.
Are you all able to pick up a copy of the NY POST or the NY TIMES? If
not you can read the article online at one of the newspapers websites.

Best wishes -

I just finished reading a fabulous book called Hollywood Divas - The Good, The Bad, And The Fabulous. The book has profiles of all the great classic actresses including Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Norma Shearer, Bette Davis, Clara Bow, Jayne Mansfield, and Paulette Goddard. The book is written by one of my favorite authors, James Robert Parish. His books, like The Hollywood Book Of Scandals, are always fun to read and filled with lots of juicy stories. My one complaint about the book is that there are too many contemporary stars in it like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez :-(

You can find the book at Amazon.com

Thanks! It was a real coup to get Cathy's permission to print those
letters so I'm really very pleased that everyone is enjoying reading
them. Casey was very eager to get his story across, or at least a taste

I appreciate the supportive e-mails. Thanks so much!

I agree, a book based on the opinions of the twins together with Casey's
viewpoint of Joan
as a grandmother is an interesting concept. I hope it eventuates.

Hi Michelle,

Don't let a couple of bad reviews bother you. There are also quite a few positive reviews of the book at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I didn't even notice the errors when I was reading the book.

I think doing a full-length biography of Joan with her family's support is a terrific idea. Cathy and her sister have said very little about Joan since Mommie Dearest was published. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is curious about what their life with Joan was like.

Hi Everyone -

Just a note to let you all know that my Joan Crawford book has been released.
I'm very
pleased with the results. There are a few typos throughout which have been noted
and are
being fixed for the next print run. Inevitable hiccups of a first run book.
Frustrating, yes,
but it does happen. A couple of people have decided to give the book a one star
Amazon
review because of these typos which has been exceedingly disappointing.

Anyway, many people have also expressed that they'd like to hear more from
Joan's
grandson, Casey. Well, that wish may not be too far away...his foreword in "Joan
Crawford:
Her Life In Letters" was particularly interesting. His description of Joan as
being a loving
grandmother has sparked a lot of interest in wanting to know more and more.

Casey has expressed interest in doing a rebuttal book to "Mommie Dearest" with
me. This
would also include memories and photos from his mother and Joan's other
daughter,
Cathy.

Joan's reputation may be making a long awaited comeback...

Hope everyone had a wonderful looooooong weekend!

Best always -
Michelle x

any luck it will arrive on a Friday so I can kick back and read it
cover to cover. If it comes on a weekday I'll be be one tired puppy

I started a new Yahoo group dedicated to the discusion of the late

anyone is interested in joining the address is:

It's in a rather primative state right now and member's will be

I just finished reading Joan Crawford: Her Life In Her Letters by Michelle Vogel. I was expecting the book to be just a series of Joan's letters but it was so much more. The book is a combination of a Joan biography and Joan telling her story in her own words. You learn about Joan's career, her marriages, and her rivalry with Bette Davis. Michelle also does a great job defending Joan against accusations Christina Crawford made in her book Mommie Dearest. There is a nice forward by Joan's grandson and some rare photos. This is one Joan Crawford book even Joan would enjoy reading!

You can order the book at BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com I also have a link to order it on my web site - http://www.classicactresses.com/joanc.html

Hollywood makeup master Bob Schiffer dies at age 88

LOS ANGELES -- Bob Schiffer, a veteran Hollywood makeup artist who helped glamorize a galaxy of stars including Joan Crawford, Paulette Goddard, Errol Flynn and Cary Grant, has died. He was 88.

Schiffer died Tuesday from complications of a stroke at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center.

Beginning with his first makeup job as a teenager working on the 1932 Marx Brothers' comedy "Horse Feathers," the Seattle-born Schiffer spent the next seven decades working on a string of movies including the classics "Captains Courageous," "Only Angels Have Wings," "From Here to Eternity," "Marty," "Camelot" and "My Fair Lady."

At RKO, he worked on "Becky Sharp," the first feature-length three-color film; as well as "Annie Oakley" starring Barbara Stanwyck and most of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals. At MGM, his credits included "A Night at the Opera," "Mutiny on the Bounty," "The Good Earth" and "The Wizard of Oz."

Earning a reputation as an expert in women's makeup, Schiffer created stylish new looks for Crawford, Myrna Loy, Ingrid Bergman and other actresses. After moving to Columbia in 1938, he became Rita Hayworth's exclusive makeup artist, working with the actress on "The Lady from Shanghai," "Gilda" and "Cover Girl."

Schiffer also had a long association with Burt Lancaster. Among his films with Lancaster: "Elmer Gantry," "The Leopard," "The Young Savages," "Judgment at Nuremberg" and, most notably, "The Birdman of Alcatraz," for which Schiffer aged Lancaster's character from age 18 to 80 -- a process that took 2 1/2 hours a day.

"Normally, you would put a mustache on a man to make him look old, or something simple like that," Schiffer once recalled in an interview. "But I aged Burt without any obvious changes; you weren't conscious of them. And it wasn't easy with this strong jaw line. I used a lot of rubber appliances for the various changes."

I'm sure I did. I was staying at a hotel right down the street from Grauman's and spent a lot of time there taking pictures of all the stars prints. I even saw a couple of movies in the theatre :-)

I just got a terrific coffee-table book called Horst Portraits: 60 Years Of Style. There are full page photos of lots of classic stars including Joan Crawford, Gene Tierney (in color), Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis, and Janet Gaynor. The photos are very beautiful and most of them I had never seen before. It's definitely a book any film fan would enjoy. You can order it online at Amazon :-)
