[[[[The pictures of Robert Frank might strike someone as being sloppy - the
tone range isn't right and things like that - but they're far superior
to the pictures of Ansel Adams with regard to quality, because the
quality of Ansel Adams, if I may say so, is essentially the quality of
a postcard. But the quality of Robert Frank is a quality that has
something to do with what he's doing, what his mind is. It's not
balancing out the sky to the sand and so forth. It's got to do with
intention."]]]]
i ve a problem with the end statement. i believe one has to be faithful to the
medium of expression. Robert Frank might have had a gr8 pic in mind while he
got a sloppy one (nonetheless capturing an important moment), but that doesnt
give one the reason to ignore the basics of medium.
Ansel Adam i'm sure got what he wanted. postcard or cell phone wall paper. Frank
over Ansel????
no way................... get ur basics right.
thanks,

Robert Frank of 'The Americans' fame is a good example, I s'pose... He shot with
a simple Leica and went on to be regarded as possibly 'photographer of the
century'...
Master DoP Darius Khondji, ASC has acknowledged his Frank's huge influence on
his career..

"Quality doesn't mean deep blacks and whatever tonal range. That's not quality,
that's a kind of quality. The pictures of Robert Frank might strike someone as
being sloppy - the tone range isn't right and things like that - but they're far
