Current Trends in Bengali Cinema
The lights are bright, the cameras are rolling, the sound of the clapstick
echoes in and around Tollygunge. Bangla cinema, it seems, is on a roll. But
is quality the price of this sudden spurt of new directors, new films and
new genres in the Bengali film industry?

RE-REVIEWS

Hoccheta Ki?
Basu Chatterjee has entertained us with his delightful brand of middle-class
comedies with strong storylines and believable characters. But whether his
idea of light entertainment jells with David Dhawan's brand of comic twists,
is something one needs to question.

Tollylights
The narrative, of Tollylights, with the Bengal Film Industry as a backdrop,
is structured and designed completely through jump-cuts, either moving from
the present to the past and back. Though this may cause some confusion in
the beginning, one would say this sort of cinematic design suits the content
of the film, giving it a fresh and different perspective.

Dahankaal
The making of the film has been a saga by itself. Shooting began more than
ten years ago and took seven years to complete. Then the wait for funds for
post-production. This too, got over in bits and starts in 2005. The censor
certificate was granted in December 2006 and the film still had to wait more
than a year to finally release in 2008! The ten-year wait has severely
affected the quality of the otherwise well-intentioned film. Its outdated
look and obvious continuity lapses have told on the final product.

Rituparno Ghosh
In a little over a decade, Rituparno Ghosh has established himself as one of
the best directors in contemporary Indian cinema. Though he has largely
worked in Bengali, his native language, with stories and themes that are
rooted in Bengali culture, his films have broken geographical and linguistic
barriers by reaching national and international film festivals.
