The flapping of a single butterfly's wing today
produces a tiny change
in the state of the atmosphere. Over a period of time,
what the
atmosphere actually does diverges from what it would
have done. So, in
a month's time, a tornado that would have devastated
the coast doesn't
happen. In other words, it is possible that a very
small occurrence
can produce unpredictable and sometimes drastic
results by triggering
a series of increasingly significant events. -
Butterfly Effect

Dear Cineaste,

Wish you a very happy new year. The objective of this
mail is to
create a comprehensive list of 100 Art films
(definitely I don't want
to discuss about what is Art) from various regional
languages of the
Great Indian Sub Continent and get it printed and
distributed within
India. Say, something like a CRITERION COLLECTION from
India. Many of
us are aware about the presence of internationally
renowned foreign
films in different languages available to Indian
audience in the form
of DVD's, DVD – Rip's from legal and illegal sources.
But when it
comes to Indian Art films we find a presence of void
with except a few
films of Ray and Ghatak. Only students of Film
Institutes are able to
access all these films from India. This is an attempt
to make it
available to the common man.

Why Indian Films? India is a country which is so
unique with so many
diversities. It's impossible and rather unnecessary to
create a film
which represents India as a whole (Here I am not
talking about
humanity and other elements constituting universality
nor stuff like
ism's) as its soul likes in its eclectic nature unique
to our country.
In order to know our neighbors, understand their
culture and other
nuances specific to various regions within India,
awareness about
these films is a must. Off course I do acknowledge the
presence of
other means like art, literature, music etc. Also I do
accept the fact
that some of these films are shown in various film
festivals happening
within India. But this is not sufficient enough to
bring awareness to
the common man.

Why common man? Still an awareness about art films
remains as a
knowledge accessible only to the elite in all places
except states of
Kerala and West Bengal. Kudos to the film makers (I
don't want to
mention their names) and the government who made it
possible for
common man to access these films. This had created a
sea change in the
kinds of films that are being produced in these two
states. But this
is NOT the condition in other states. This initiative
will make it
happen in all places with the help film societies that
have sprung up
in every small towns and cities enabled with a digital
projector to
reach the public without the help of government.
Thanks to the
development of technology which helps us to get united
for a common
cause overcoming all barriers, which is not possible
ten years before.

This initiative will also make DD to telecast regional
films as well
as world films on Sunday afternoons hereafter. This
will happen very
soon after making a portal to register our voices to
the government of
India. This will also act as a binding thread that
connects
individuals, film societies, film institutes,
production houses, NGO's
and the government.

We want the fellow film institute students to play an
active role in
preparing the comprehensive list. This request doesn't
mean that
others are not welcome to join this process but
instead reminds the
students of film institutes to share their knowledge
which they had
acquired through training. We also request everybody
to write reviews,
add photographs and other valuable information's
(cast, crew,
producers name and address, language etc) about the
films that they
want to be in this Criterion Collection from India. We
believe that we
will be able to bring out these films in DVD's by
First January 2009
with all your support.

Please forward it to all your friends. They may not be
interested in
selecting the movies for the comprehensive list but
they can be
potential buyers. More the people, less the burden in
getting this
mammoth task done by us all. We do not belong to any
corporate. We are
just group of like minded individuals striving to make
a change in the
Indian art film scenario.

warm regards,
Indian Art Cinema Lovers
