RE-REVIEWS

Krishnakanter Will
Raja Sen's celluloid interpretation of the Bankim Chandra classic contains
the spirit of the original but lacks the fire within the novel.

Chander Bari
After the soppy and overly sentimental Alo and the disastrous Bhalobashar

LUMINARIES
-----------------------------
It's a mixed bag this time. The greatest star in contemporary Bengali Cinema
at one end and India's greatest film critic at the other.
Prosenjit
Prosenjit is the only star in the Bengali cinema horizon after Uttam Kumar
to have been able to sustain himself in the top position for over two
decades now. His films still draw full houses in Kolkata and much more, in
the villages and districts of West Bengal.

Chidananda Dasgupta
Chidananda Dasgupta is a pioneer in the movement towards serious writing on
cinema in India. He has always approached cinema holistically and placed
films and filmmakers against their socio-historical and political
perspective.

CLASSIC FILMS
-------------------------------
We feature Tarun Majumdar's most ambitious National Award winning film at
one end and a key film of the New Indian Cinema movement at the other.
Ganadevata (1978)
Ganadevata is perhaps the best exposition of Tarun Majumdar’s métier as a
filmmaker – creating films that are strong on drama and characterization and
balancing the demands of commerce and a strong politically charged social
significance.

Grihajuddha (1982)
Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s statement on Grihajuddha is clear, perceptive and
forceful. “In Grihajuddha,” he says, “my intention is to portray an average
man with contemporary sensibilities, aware of the world around him, left
with no choice but to be committed. But the atrocities practiced by big
capital frighten him and force him to abandon his commitment."
