Don't ya just love it when idiots try to review Ishtar and they JUST DON'T GET IT!!!!!!????
How many more times does a genius need to reveal that "they've got the parts the wrong
way around. Beatty should have been the ladies man and Hoffman the nerd"...... Gawd.

Including the CBC (see below)

I commented something like:

Lazy, lazy, lazy.  Isthar is not one of the worst movies ever made, it's a fine movie with a dedicated fan base.  I know Brent Bambury likes to think of himself as iconoclastic and edgy, but I always expect to find the conventional wisdom repeated on GO!, and I'm never disappointed. Those who have actually seen the movie will probably want to join the Yahoo list.  Just send an email to ILoveIshtar-suscribe@yahoogroups.com.

Comments are moderated. Let's see if they allow it to be posted on the website!

http://www.cbc.ca/go/

This week on GO!: The Absolute Worst Movies of All time

This week on GO!, Brent Bambury and three caustic film reviewers talk about the worst movies ever made.  Not just bad, not just terrible, but the absolute most brain-numbingly worst piece of celluloid junk ever.  A film that left audiences shocked, mouth agape, popcorn falling on the fall.  From Ishtar to Transformers II, it's the hell that Hollywood hath wrought.

Plus down from the mountain, it's the energy of live musical guest Zeus.

Don't miss GO! this Saturday at 10:30 AM.  11:00 on the rock.

This is really, really good.

  •  and the one commenter so far apparently wanted dumb and dumber.  All this whohah about people not being able to see past Hoffman and Beatty to see the film.... like you can ever watch a Steve Martin movie or a Bill Murray movie without having to get past "That's Steve Martin" or "That's Bill Murray"

  • Hoffman and Beatty were pretty much perfect, they made it a much brainier film than it would have been otherwise - that's one thing I like about it, and I really do think this is about the best, most insightful review of the film I've ever read.  It helps that he calls it a masterwork, not "a flawed masterpiece" or "a genius of comic film making until they leave New York" or "an enjoyable film except for the dragging scenes in the desert" and so on... he simply called it a masterwork, and that's good by me

Isn't it fantastic? I couldn't believe the article as I read it. At first I was afraid he was being sarcastic, but when I read on it - thankfully - turned out to be a genuinely positive review.

That's a brilliant review. too!  You could write film criticism for the New Yorker. I often enjoyed Pauline Kael, but she sure got it wrong about Ishtar, it was good of Richard Brody, and you, to correct the record... I guess Pauline Kael  isn't as unchallengeable as she once was.

Are you up to speed on the soundtrack, and the unfortunate situation?  I hope we see it in our lifetimes! I got a bootleg of the songs from Waiting for Guffman, surely such a thing is not impossible for Ishtar.

The Most Ridiculous Bootleg DVD Covers Of All Time (PHOTOS)

    August 10, 2010

You've seen them being sold on blankets on the streets of New York, on shelves in other countries, or even in your friend's living room: bootleg DVDs. Whether actually bootleg or just in foreign packaging, these DVD and VHS covers all have one thing in common and that is extreme misinformation. Take a look at that "Battlestar Galactica" DVD for example. Not only do they call it a "tween comedy" but they actually Photoshopped in the U.S.S. Enterprise from "Star Trek" on the front. On the front. Of the DVD. That they sell. It's a crazy world out there people, so next time you buy a movie or DVD of your favorite TV show, make sure you're buying the real thing.

Awesome. I can finally abandon my long simmering task of converting my PAL dvd

I'll be present, at least in body. The drive might take some out of me, but...
Ms. May? In person? And about THIS film?

    I know, redundant.

Would very much like to meet anyone else there.

In line @ the event - near the restroom down the hall around the corner if anyone else is here. Find us by asking "kareem abdul?" And getting the right answer. Party of 6 of us. Terribly humid, but great turnout!

    Cheers,

We have a new member, one "peasoffluff"

Mr Fluff (may I call you Peas?) I suggest you read the archived messages on the yahoo site, because you just missed the biggest (only) Ishtar news in some months - Elaine May screened Ishtar in New York today, and a number of list members attended.  Actually, no reports have come in post-event yet... they should be coming in soon... i'm eager to hear how it went.

I submitted a question to Elaine May about whether there is a "Dangerous Business" 45 record single in existence, to which she responded "I don't know," and then started talking about the Blue-Ray release of Ishtar, which sounds like it is in the works, but that she also has little control over?

She kept referring to "Dangerous Business" as "Telling the Truth." I considered
shouting a correction but she wrote the movie so I guess she can call it
    whatever she wants.

I would guess her age may be affecting her recall. It was interesting to see so
many fans of hers who knew nothing about Ishtar - and their reaction to the
    film's fans.

BTW - great to meet you there, Travis.
