I misread the response too. I thought "what the heck is this - is there a fight brewing? Am I going to have to step in and moderate?" But no, Ishtar fans once again show what a swell bunch of people they are by sorting this out in a really civilized way. Once again I am proud to be an Ishtarite.
I have once again been haunting the boards at the IMDB, arguing with Ishtar haters, trying to recruit new members for this list among the fans. I promise them a good time once they get here... but when they arrive, they don't find much. I apologize for any that feel mislead by my promises... my intentions are good. the other promise that I make - it won't swamp your inbox, at least is true. I've been pretty good at keeping the spam to a minimum.
I'm an underachiever, but in the spirit of Rogers and Clarke, I at least strive to be a lovable underachiever.
There's discussion of the films of Elaine May at this site:
I think the comments on Ishtar are pretty right on.
When they are discussing great lines, I realized that for me it's hard to single one out... because the funny parts are even better in context. For example:
JM: Elaine May convinced them all to come down this path with her.
There’s a great moment early on, when Hoffman is on the ledge
considering suicide...Beatty’s character comes
out to save him, and consoles him by saying, “Hey, it takes a lot of
nerve to have nothing at your age.”
True enough, but the moment gets even greater. Beatty goes on "don't you understand that? Most guys'd
be ashamed, but you've got the guts to just say 'to hell with it'. You
say that you'd rather have nothing than settle for less, understand?" Hoffman replies, "I've never thought of it that way."
I wanted to argue against KristenfromMA, who wrote: "...you lost me on Ishtar. I've tried to watch it on a few occasions, and I
just end up feeling embarrassed for everyone involved (and frustrated
as the sound is just awful)," but "Comments are closed for this entry" - unfair that the final word should go to somebody with such bad taste!
BTW, I'm not such a fanatic that I have all the words memorized (yet). Yet. I google the dialogue before I post to make sure it's right (that's how I stumbled across Kim Morgan's blog). There's a great resource that some newbies on the list might not be aware of:

As soon as I sent it I regretted it. I didn't mean to imply that you personally would never be funny, only that very few people are funnier than they. They are two of faves, in case you couldn't gather. No hard feelings, I hope, as the gibe was not intended to single you out since I don't even know you.
And on that note: Wouldn't it be interesting to see a remake of A&C Meet Frankenstein with Jerry Seinfeld (big fan of A&C) and Jason Alexander in their place? Maybe Martin Landau could channel Bela again to play Dracula.
