The idea for Ishtarpoloosa came from Bob Helbig, author of the fan fiction Ishtar sequel "Dangerous Business" - which I thoroughly enjoyed, and you can too, at:
http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/bobhelbig/Telling_The_Truth_Can_Be_Dangerous_Business_index.html
I came up with the name, but the concept is Bob's.
I went so far as to contact Jody Franklin, who helped stage the Paul Williams tribute in Vancouver, where they played Dangerous Business to (at?) Williams... actually, apparently Williams loved it, the Ishtar songs are among his favorites of the songs he's written.
Anyway, Jody asked me some questions that stopped me dead in my tracks: "Where are you thinking this would take place? Would there be a budget to bring us in?"
I never wrote back, shameful behavior, I know.
But since then I had a piece of music in the online Magazine "MungBeing" that he co-edits (Matt says check it out: http://www.mungbeing.com) so maybe I can contact him again without too much shame...
But anyway (focus, focus, edit, edit) whether a live event comes off or not, I like the idea of the tribute album - and I for one accept your very generous offer. Several of us here are musicians (or pretend to be one, like I do) - could it be that every rock band is Spinal Tap, and every songwriter is Rogers or Clarke, or in his/her heart of hearts, is afraid that's what s/he is?
I think we should try to get complete versions of the songs - I believe that Paul Williams songs were all complete.
And a pet project of mine - flesh out Bob's songs from "Dangerous Business" and give them the Rogers and Clarke treatment!!!
Yes, that IS right!
Thanks for you exciting offer.
Hey, Matt and y'all. This Ishtarpoloosa idea is something good. The
ishtarthemovie.com site has received almost a dozen requests for more
about the music, i.e. lyrics, tabs, chord charts, and the typical 'is
there a soundtrack?'.
I propose we make this happen: 'Ishtarpoloosa: A Fan Based Tribute To
Rogers And Clarke'. At the VERY least I am hereby volunteering my
experience in writing, recording, editing and manufacturing CDs to
help things along.
I'm in the process (not sure when this will be done...) of writing out
chord charts for 'PICNIC' and 'DANGEROUS BUSINESS', based on the promo
45 rpm from Capitol Records. Once a few more tunes are charted from
the movie, I will add them to ishtarthemovie.com for all to use. If
enough folks make cover recordings of R 'n C tunes, say, a dozen, then
clips of these would go on the site as well.
I would also jump on preparing full CD packaging and look into paying
all mechanical royalties so for proper CD release.
If we can't buy a soundtrack, let's make our own...
Keep in touch...
"Oh, is THAT right!"
