Some tidbits from Joe O'Connell's blog. The first item here is hot off
the non-presses:

ABC moves 'The Deep End' premiere up to January

Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. Central to be exact, an ABC rep revealed Thursday
evening. The Deep End finishes a six-episode shoot at the Studios at
Las Colinas this week. If you didn't already read my report from this
set as published in The Dallas Morning News, it's here:
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/ent/stories/DN-deepend_1109gd.ART0.S\
tate.Edition1.4b6389f.html

It appears now that an additional episode order will be based on how
the show does in the ratings in January.

Bryan Poyser's 'Lovers of Hate' in Sundance

A big congrats to Austin's Bryan Poyser (Dear Pillow), whose Lovers of
Hate, which shot both in Austin and near where Sundance is held, was
selected as a dramatic competition film for this year's Sundance Film
Festival.

To understand what a big deal this is for Poyser, read the opening of
this Austin Chronicle article I wrote a while back:
http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid:582361

Independent Spirit award noms go to McCay, Humpday

Film Independent announced its Spirit Award noms, which included
Christian McKay of Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles for best
supporting actor and Humpday--which premiered at the South by
Southwest Film Festival--for the John Casavettes Award for films made
for less than $500,000.

Richard Linklater's 'Liars (A-E)' dies

Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater calls himself a "promiscuous"
filmmaker in an interesting interview with England's Guardian about Me
and Orson Welles. He also talks a bit about how his planned road movie
Liars (A-E) fell apart:

This summer he was due to shoot a romantic comedy but the studios
wouldn't play ball (what he saw as a mainstream outing, they saw as an
art movie). He has tentative plans to make a third installment in the
Before Sunrise/Sunset series, but he doesn't want to do it just
because he can. "There are enough of those movies made as it is:
sequels, remakes, franchises. It depresses me. It's the way the
industry is going. They figure they can make these huge-ass Harry
Potters, Batmans and Transformers, spend $200m on a surefire hit, and
who cares about the quality? They've basically stopped making my kind
of movies altogether."

'The Deep End' and 'Jack and Dan' cultivate North Texas roots

* *

12:00 AM CST on Friday, December 18, 2009

* *By JOE O'CONNELL / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
*

Expect to see the latest North Texas-shot network series sooner than
expected, a clear sign that television is indeed the area's good-luck charm.

ABC has moved the premiere of law-office dramedy /The Deep End /to Jan.
21 at 7 p.m. An indefinite spring date had earlier been earmarked for
the show, which just wrapped production of its sixth episode last week
at the Studios at Las Colinas.

Does this mean more episodes are likely to be ordered? No word on that
yet, said Shari Rosenblum, executive director of publicity for 20th
Century Fox Television, which is producing the show.

She added that "the good news is that we'll know sooner than later if
we're a hit, because we won't have to wait for a spring launch."

Here's a taste of what to expect in the first episode: "Dylan (Matt Long
<http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Matt_Long> of /Jack & Bobby/) is
given an impossible pro bono custody case; Beth (Leah Pipes of /Sorority
Row/) keeps mum when a 90-year-old man signs an agreement thinking that
she's his daughter; Liam (Ben Lawson of /Neighbors/) must get a client
to sign with the firm under false pretenses; Addy (Tina Majorino
<http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Tina_Majorino> of /Big Love
<http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Big_Love>/) finally gets some
attention from her boss when she speaks her mind; and Malcolm (Austin
native Mehcad Brooks <http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Mehcad_Brooks>
of /True Blood <http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/True_Blood>/) gets
off on the wrong foot when he's hired outside of the firm's traditional
process."

Just after the show premieres, Fox series /Jack and Dan /starts shooting
around North Texas. The detective show created by Matt Nix
<http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Matt_Nix> (/Burn Notice
<http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Burn_Notice>/), starring Colin Hanks
<http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Colin_Hanks> (Tom Hanks' son) and
Bradley Whitford <http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Bradley_Whitford>
(/West Wing/), is unusual in that Fox has committed to 13 episodes and
96 shooting days without ever seeing a pilot. In contrast, /The Deep End
/shot not one but two pilot episodes before ABC ordered episodes.

The first episode of /Jack and Dan /will be directed by Tim Matheson
<http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Tim_Matheson> (/Animal House/).
Along with Whitford and series co-star Diana-Maria Riva, he was in /West
Wing/.

"They will be all over Dallas, primarily, but also outside of Dallas
proper," said Janis Burklund of the Dallas Film Commission, who sees it
as a good sign for 2010 after a mostly lean 2009. The coming year should
also give a clear indication of how well the increased size of the
state's film incentive program will energize the industry.

"I think considering the economy and everything else going on, we did
pretty well," she said of the North Texas film scene. The /Jack and Dan
/shoot "bodes well for what our new year is going to be."

Will television continue to revive the North Texas film industry? It is
certainly keeping the area's experienced crews working, and some
interesting nibbles may be on the horizon. Consider the talk of a
modern-day version of /Dallas/. Burklund said Warner Bros. told her it's
in the early stages of development with a screenwriter recently hired;
according to /The Hollywood Reporter/, Cynthia Cidre (/Cane/) will write
TNT's new take on the series. The once touted big-screen version of
/Dallas /remains on hold.

Bonus footage

The handiwork of Dallas computer-animation company Liquid Logixx is all
over the second season of the creepily fascinating series /1,000 Ways to
Die/, which airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on Spike TV
<http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Spike_TV> and "combines the science
of living and the randomness of death with a dash of Darwinism." ... An
interesting big-screen project has Dallas actor Lane Garrison (/Prison
Break <http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Prison_Break>/) writing the
true story of the Gainesville State School's football team, consisting
of teens convicted of crimes, according to /The Hollywood Reporter/.
Garrison is now out of prison after time served for vehicular
manslaughter. Dallas-based producer Steve Riach is behind the potential
film.

Man Camp: Extreme "Wimp" Makeover meets Intervention!

Man Camp is run by a group of "men", everything from a 6ft 6inch lumberjack to a
former Navy SEAL. Man Camp not only provides a camp that transforms wimps into
men but the organization provides an outreach program that offers interventions.

Today there are shows on TV, classes and therapists who are providing treatment,
infotainment, and education training men to be more sensitive and caring towards
their feminine counterparts, wives, girlfriends and women in general. It is Man
Camp's belief that there is a time and place for this sensitivity stuff but that
the real problem today is that men are no longer behaving like men and instead
the male figure is being dominated and "shaped" by the women in today's society.
While on the surface this seems appealing to women but deep down women crave a
re al man, a hero, an Indiana Jones! While Man Camp respects and supports some
sensitivity training for men MC does not include this in their curriculum, other
than sensitivity training as it applies to a "bob and weave", slipping into
range for a skull crushing blow from a hammer fist to the jaw.

Man Camp is a week long camp that is conducted out in the woods in away from
distractions. there is no golf, no racquetball, no gossip magazines, no TV, no
suits, no bosses, no mother in laws, no motorized transportation. Instead Man
Camp is set up like the Navy SEAL's Hell Week and even has the "bell" a camp
member can ring if he wants to quit and go back to being a loser! Man Camp's
"bell" is not the big "boat bell" the SEAL aspirant rings; no Man Camp provides
a little "tinker bell" the wimp must tinkle to give notice he is going back to
the couch in front of the TV.

At Man Camp we provide an "intervention" specialist" who will come to a home at
the request of the family and friends of the "wimp". Man Camp hears it all: "I'm
no longer sexually attracted to my husband", "the kids are too embarrassed of
their father to bring him to school for a show and tell", "I've lost respect for
my best friend, he's a real pussy", etc. Man Camp sends in their intervention
specialist and our female "therapist". The specialist is a real man the
therapist is a hot chick who can kick every wimps ass; in fact during an
intervention if our targeted wimp is in denial our female therapist will
challenge the little wimp to an arm wrestling contest, if he refuses he's a wimp
and if he takes on our trained arm wrestling chick he will surely get clobbered
in front of his family and friends!

Man Camp also provides a training ground for applicants who were recently dumped
by a chick due most probably to the fact that they were too wimpy, wishy washy
or were constantly too concerned with the whereabouts of their girlfriend,
calling her cell phone or asking her friends for "updates". Man Camp will take
these clingy little fellows and transform them into MEN. Man Camp will then do a
follow up, after our former wimps have graduated, as these newly made men go out
and retain their former girlfriend in a manly way, or not. Getting the girl back
is not always the right result, in fact, more times than not our former wimp
completely accepts the break up and instead goes into a multi dating frenzy,
asking out hot chicks he normally would be too timid to even look at. Man Camp
truly transforms those with the male anatomy into real men, who take control of
their careers, relationships, finances, etc. Man Camp provides breakthrough
transformations after a week long intensive training in which the participant
will be put in competitive situations with other participants, such as mixed
martial art sparring(we do use safety gear), rock climbing, high altitude
repelling, race car driving, heavy machinery operation, chainsaw tree chopping
activity, cold water entry and racing(if our wimp can't swim we give him a
buoyancy vest and teach him the dog paddle), night time special forces
techniques for evading detection, affirmative and aggressive debating
competitions, improvised weapon training, extreme survival fighting
techniques(with monster suits), decisive action class, Harley Davidson riding,
"hard" touch football, auto engine work, fast and furious make out moves and
techniques (that we have the timid and shy work the mannequins (and we then will
have real chix-"actresses" practice with our teeny weeny boys) and more. We do
not reveal every aspect of Man Camp and we change it up for each new wave of
participants. We do this because we want our participants to conquer the fear of
the unknown(an example is that sometimes we use DE-FANGED rattlesnakes in a pit
that we put our little wimps into!). We also include a night out on the town
which we strongly encourage our unmarried participants to hit on every female in
the crowd-we use hidden body cams to record the process, then later we will
evaluate the participants progress in a classroom setting.

If you or a loved one is experiencing the symptoms of loserhood, such as,
getting dumped by your girlfriend, or getting every excuse in the book why your
female counterpart can't have sex with you, or your kids ask you to drop them
off at school five blocks away, or you've had the same job with no promotions
for years, or you can't seem to get a date with a chick, or you can't throw the
football with your kid, or whatever the wimpy symptom is-and if your a wimp you
know what I'm talking about-then come join us at Man Camp for a week of hell
that transform your life into heaven! And remember, wimp, you can always grab
the tiny bell and tinkle your way out and tinkle your way back to your old life,
cultivating your inner child. Tinkle. Tinkle. Manhood awaits you.

Joe's Top 10 Texas film stories of the decade

>

The last decade has been a wild ride. I started writing about the Texas
film industry in the late '90s, mainly covering film festivals for the
San Antonio Express-News and writing the occasional film feature for the
Austin American-Statesman. Then I had the notion that Texas needed a
column about the industry itself that looked forward not backward. I, of
course, was clueless that Jane Sumner had been writing just such a
column for The Dallas Morning News for a couple of decades.

Being the fool I am, I proceeded to write a column with hopes that I
could sell it to smaller newspapers all over Texas. I was wrong. But I
got lucky and the Austin American-Statesman picked the column up in
early 2000. I moved the column to The Austin Chronicle in 2004 and added
a Dallas Morning News column in late 2005—a year after Sumner took early
retirement. As we end the aughts, here are the top film stories I
covered during the last decade. They provide a microcosm of what the
state's film industry underwent:

1. The Alamo comes to town. I heard rumors that Ron Howard was planning
to do a remake of The Alamo and shoot it in Texas. When Howard went to
the governor's mansion to announce the project, I was there covering it
for the Statesman. Unfortunately so was one of their capitol reporters.
I wrote the story anyway, and it ran the next day on the cover
<http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=print_story&articleid=VR1117864212&cate\
goryid=13>
of Variety. Later I sniffed out the filming location and that story ran
on the cover
<http://joesfilmnews.blogspot.com/2009/12/alamo-looks-to-shoot-near-hamilton-poo\
l.html>
of the Statesman. During filming I visited the set and provided this
report
<http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/special_reports/Alamo_movie_down_to_final_days\
_of_filming.html>
for the San Antonio Express-News. Are you getting the point of why this
film that wasn't directed by Howard and wasn't particularly good (blame
Disney and its cost-cutting and script-chopping ways) still tops my
list? It also is perhaps the biggest example of the Texas Myth.

2. My original Statesman column was titled “On Location,” which made it
easy to convince my editors to send me to the sets of such local
productions as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
<http://joesfilmnews.blogspot.com/2009/12/on-set-of-texas-chainsaw-massacre.html\
>
and The Rookie
<http://joesfilmnews.blogspot.com/2009/12/on-set-of-rookie.html>, which
was directed by Texan John Lee Hancock, the same guy who would go on to
direct the ill-fated The Alamo. He's a great guy, a fine writer and
we'll be seeing more and more for him years to come.

3. The most in-depth stories I wrote about the film industry appeared in
The Austin Chronicle. Certainly my best journalism is contained in a
piece
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A627424>
that put a face on the slow down of the Texas film scene, but this piece
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A582361>
on the death of Burnt Orange Productions also had its merits. Both
pieces are about dreamers and what happens when art runs up against
business.

4. I wrote about the technical side of film as well in this piece
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A431148>
marking the death of VHS. Video Business, a sister publication to
Variety had me investigate the now-forgotten EZ Disc
<http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA615403.html?q=%22joe+o%27connell%22>.
And then there were the high-def format wars
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A263097>
and the changes in film distribution
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A347505>.

5. Friday Night Lights reared its head majorly during the decade,
including in the under-reported case of Richard Linklater, who started
work on what I now realize was his last try at directing a version of
the book. He even cast Mehcad Brooks, an Austin native who credits the
nascient project with getting his career going. Linklater declined to
talk to me about the project, despite widespread publicity in Texas, and
wasn't pleased by this story
<http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117866373.html?categoryid=13&cs=1>
that ran in Variety. I somehow didn't cover the actual FNL film much,
but I did visit the set of the television show both in the first season
<http://www.network54.com/Forum/522823/message/1156962755/FRIDAY+NIGHT+LIGHTS+te\
levision+Series>
and in the second
<http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/ent/stories/DN-fridaynightlights_10\
04gl.ART.State.Edition2.422ff87.html>.

6. I've written a few hundred film columns across the decade. Here's an
example from the Statesman
<http://www.austincc.edu/joconne/lastfilmcolumn.htm>, another from The
Austin Chronicle
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/column?oid=oid%3A594722>
and yet one more from The Dallas Morning News
<http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/ent/stories/DN-shotintexas_0320gd.A\
RT.State.Edition1.4ac97e7.html>.

7. The Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Road Show gave me the chance to try
more creative writing approaches as I watched The Last Picture Show
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A286678>
in Archer City and viewed The Goonies
<http://www.originalalamo.com/sharedfiles/goonies.html> in a cave with
tiny Corey Feldman in attendance.

8. It all began for me with coverage of film festivals. I wrote about
Tim McCanlies' Dancer, Texas at one of those early festivals, which was
technically in the '90s. But a blurb from my review
<http://www.movlic.com/publicity/Synopsis/0016506.html> still appears in
publicity materials. This piece about Alejandro Gomez Monteverde's film
Bella was a cover story
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%3A554262>
in The Austin Chronicle. The Texas Film Hall of Fame awards are a chance
to do a little star gazing. Here are some fun photos
<http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Screens/Blogs/index.html/objID600395/bl\
ogID/>
and a few more
<http://joemoconnell.blogspot.com/2009/03/texas-film-hall-of-fame.html>.

9. The big film industry battle of the decade was the long struggle to
convince the Texas Legislature to create a film incentives program, then
to adequately fund it. Here's a story about the side battle over how
Texas is portrayed on screen
<http://www.rickross.com/reference/waco/waco350.html>, and here's
another piece about the overall incentives push
<http://www.tpj.org/2009/01/dallas-morning-news-texas-legislature.html>.

10. Television series production is clearly the current savior for the
Texas film industry. Here's a visit to the set of North Texas-shot The
Deep End
<http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/ent/stories/DN-deepend_1109gd.ART0.\
State.Edition1.4b6389f.html>
and a chat with star Billy Zane.

Federal Trade Commission
Protecting America's Consumers

Facts for Consumers:

If You've Got The Look, Look Out! Avoiding Modeling Scams

What could be more flattering? Someone approaches you at the mall and says,
"You could be a model. You've got the 'look' we're after. Here's my card.
Give me a call to set up an appointment." People have always said you're
good looking. Now, visions of glamour, travel and money flash before your
eyes.

It's true that some successful models have been discovered in everyday
places like malls, boutiques, clubs, and airports. But the vast majority of
would-be models knock on door after agency door before work comes their way.
It's All an Act.

If and when you make that follow-up appointment, you'll probably find
yourself in an office filled with lots of other model and actor hopefuls.
Then the spiel starts. What you thought was a job interview with a talent
agency turns into a high-pressure sales pitch for modeling or acting
classes, or for "screen tests" or "photo shoots" that can range in price
from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

Man, woman, or child - it makes no difference to bogus model and talent
scouts. Often, these scouts are after one thing - your money - and will say
just about anything to get it. But what they say isn't always what they
mean.

What They Say vs. What They Mean

Unscrupulous model and talent scouts have their acts down pat. Listen
carefully to read between their lines.

     * "We're scouting for people with your 'look' to model and act."
I need to sign up as many people as possible. My commission depends on
it.
     * "Your deposit is totally refundable."
Your deposit is refundable only if you meet very strict refund
conditions.
     * "You must be specially selected for our program. Our talent experts
will carefully evaluate your chances at success in the field and will only
accept a few people into our program."
       We take almost everyone.
     * "There's a guaranteed refund if you're not accepted into the program."
Everyone's accepted into the program. Forget the refund.
     * "You can't afford our fees? No problem. You can work them off with the
high-paying jobs we'll get you."
We demand payment, whether or not you get work.
     * "Commissions from our clients are our major source of income."
Our income comes from the fees we charge you.

Pose-itioning Yourself

To break into the business, you - the talent - need professional photos.
There are two types of standard photographs - a "head shot" and a "composite
card."

     * The typical marketing tool for an actor, experienced or not, the head
shot usually is an 8" x 10" black and white photo of the face, with your
resume printed on the back.
     * A "comp card," the typical marketing tool for the experienced model or
the wannabe, usually features several shots on the same sheet, showing off
the talent in different attire or settings.

Agencies and schools offer separate and distinct services. Make sure you
know the difference.

     * Modeling (or talent) agencies secure employment for experienced models
and actors. Some agents require that you sign up exclusively with them;
others may allow you to register with them as well as with other agencies in
town.
     * Modeling and acting schools claim to provide instruction - for a fee -
in poise, posture, diction, skin care, make-up application, the proper walk,
and more. Modeling schools do not necessarily act as agents or find work for
you - after you take their classes, you may be on your own.

Talent Tips:

     * Steer clear of modeling companies that require you to use a specific
photographer. Compare fees and the work quality of several photographers.
     * Be suspicious if a company requires an up-front fee to serve as your
agent.
     * Be cautious if the school has a special referral relationship with a
specific modeling agency. The two could be splitting your fees, or the
agency may not be suited to your needs.

Avoiding a Model Rip-Off

     * Ask yourself, "why me?" Don't let your emotions - and the company's
flattery - take control. Think carefully and critically about how you were
approached: if it was in a crowded mall, think how many others also may have
been approached.
     * Avoid high-pressure sales tactics. Never sign a document without
reading and understanding it first. In fact, ask for a blank copy of the
contract to take home and review with someone you trust. If the company
refuses, walk away.
     * Be leery of companies that only accept payment in cash or by money
order. Read it as a strong signal that the company is more interested in
your money than your career.
     * Be wary of claims about high salaries. Successful models in small
markets can earn $75 to $150 an hour, but the work is irregular.
     * Ask for the names, addresses and phone numbers of models and actors
who have secured successful work - recently - based on the company's
training.
     * Check out client claims. If an agency says it has placed models and
actors in specific jobs, contact the companies to verify that they've hired
models and actors from the agency.
     * Be skeptical of local companies claiming to be the "biggest" agency or
a "major player" in the industry, especially if you live in a smaller city
or town.
     * Realize that different parts of the country have different needs. For
example, New York is recognized for fashion modeling; the
Washington/Baltimore area is known for industrial or training films.
     * Ask if the company/school is licensed or bonded, if that's required by
your state. Verify this information with the appropriate authorities, such
as your local consumer protection agency or state Attorney General. Make
sure the license is current.
     * Ask your local Better Business Bureau, consumer protection agency and
state Attorney General if there are any unresolved consumer complaints on
file about the company.
     * Get everything in writing, including any promises that have been made
orally.
     * Keep copies of all important papers, such as your contract and company
literature, in a safe place.

You've Got the Cutest Little Baby Face

A special word to parents of infants and toddlers

Think your child is model material? Bogus talents scouts do. And they'll
gladly set up a professional photo shoot to allegedly help you get modeling
and acting jobs for your tyke. Of course, they don't tell you that the
market for infant models and actors is very small. What's more, because an
infant's looks change quickly, the photos become outdated. In truth, few
infants are marketed with professional photos. Legitimate agents,
advertising agencies, casting directors and producers generally ask for
casual snapshots of infants that have been taken by family members or
friends.
Where to Complain

If you've think you've been scammed by a bogus model or talent scout,
contact your local consumer protection agency, state Attorney General, or
Better Business Bureau. They're in your local directory assistance.

The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair
business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help
consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint or to get free

either stay or leave at this point and are invited back at
4:30PM to view the last taped commercial of the day.

During the day, your teen will be constantly on camera
auditioning (using scripts from commercials that Donise has cast
and are age appropriate) in various types of scenarios, both

and critiqued on an individual basis. You'll be astonished at
your teen's improvement throughout the day.

If your teen is serious about the business, this is the best
way to get started. If your teen is already active, this is
the best way to take their career to the next level.

SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP – THE FEATURE-LENGTH SCREENPLAY

Michael Cohn, a professional filmmaker with more than eighteen years
experience
writing and directing feature-length films, is offering an intensive
workshop
for aspiring screenwriters in the Houston area. The focus of the
workshop will
be on developing a feature-length narrative from synopsis through
complete scene
outline, and, if time permits, the writing of the screenplay itself.
Limited to
ten students this workshop is geared for persons who have at least some
script writing experience (from within or outside of a classroom
setting) and
who would like to tackle a feature-length screenplay.

Workshop sessions will be held Thursday evenings, 7:30-10:00pm,
beginning February 18
and will continue for eight weeks through April 8.

Mr. Cohn has directed three feature films, worked with such actors as Martin

studios, and written screenplays for such directors as Martin Scorsese, John
McTiernan, Alfonso Arau, Bille August, and Tim Burton.

Fort Worth native Tom Huckabee returns home to finish his dream film

* *

12:00 AM CST on Friday, January 29, 2010

* *By JOE O'CONNELL / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
*

If you want a primer on the frustrations of Hollywood filmmaking, just
ask Tom Huckabee, who didn't see his dream film to fruition until he
returned to North Texas.

Huckabee's semiautobiographical /Carried Away /follows a man who breaks
his grandmother out of a Fort Worth nursing home and is chased
cross-country by his dysfunctional family. The low-budget film is
beautifully shot with a smart story that digs deeply into very human
territory.

The film will premiere Feb. 6 in Mississippi at the Oxford Film
Festival, about 20 years after Huckabee wrote the original script. In
the intervening years the story was optioned, and high-profile directors
were approached, but the film was never made.

Huckabee worked in Los Angeles with his longtime pal, actor Bill Paxton,
often polishing the scripts on projects that included /Frailty/. He also
worked in quality control for Lucasfilms before returning to his
hometown of Fort Worth after the deaths of his wife and mother. He
briefly headed the Lone Star International Film Festival, but he knew it
was time to take the big leap.

So he sold his Los Angeles home and used the proceeds to finance the
film. "I'm in the process of sawing the limb off," Huckabee said. "I'm
the cartoon character who has jumped off the cliff and is furiously
pumping his legs. My wife passed in May 2006, and nothing could be worse
than that. I don't sweat the small stuff like I used to."

Huckabee talked to actor-filmmaker Gabriel Horn at a cast-and-crew
screening of the Cleburne-shot horror film /Night Crawlers/, and Horn,
who ended up with a breakout lead performance in /Carried Away/, urged
him on.

"I decided to make a movie and have it done in a year," Huckabee said of
/Carried Away/. "I'd spent the past 15 years working on projects, most
that didn't ever get made."

Huckabee knows the do-it-yourself work ethic, dating back to teenage
films made with his father's camera and to his college days drumming for
the infamous Texas band the Huns – their first show in 1978 at Raul's in
Austin was raided by the police and sparked that city's punk-rock scene.

More film festivals and targeted screenings in retirement centers are in
the film's future.

"I'd love to travel the country like a band with a film in my
briefcase," Huckabee said.

Bonus footage

Fox series /Jack and Dan/ is now titled /Code 58/, and the title may
change again before all is said and done. It's at the start of a
13-episode Dallas shoot. The Matt Nix (/Burn Notice/) creation is set to
premiere at 8 p.m. June 7, with special previews May 12 and May 19. The
new title is supposedly Dallas cop talk for a routine investigation. Fox
describes the comedic drama starring Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford as
"what happens when an old-school cop and a modern-day detective expose
the big picture of small crime." Whitford sported a monstrous '80s-style
mustache for the show's recent press meet. ... Will ABC order more
episodes of North Texas-shot /The Deep End/? The premiere episode
finished fourth among major networks in its time slot.

DONISE L. HARDY, C.S.A., PRESENTS AN ON-CAMERA
TV COMMERCIAL AUDITION TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP
FOR TEENS (12 - 16)
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2010, IN DALLAS
Classes fill immediately, so don't procrastinate!

You've been asking for this for over a year, so please
come join us for the best seven hours you'll ever invest
in your teen's career. Los Angeles/Texas Casting Director,
Donise L. Hardy, C.S.A., Owner and founder of A CASTING PLACE,
has been a leader in casting TV commercials in the State of
Texas for over 10 years. Her credits include: McDONALD'S,
OSCAR MAYER, WAL*MART, ETCH-A-SKETCH, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA,
SEARS BACK TO SCHOOL, AT&T, CICI'S PIZZA, PGA: FIRST TEE,
AMERICAN RED CROSS, TEXAS TOURISM, ORACLE/DELL, H-E-B, DHL,
WESTERN UNION, CARINO'S, STRIPES, WINDTRICITY, XCEL ENERGY,
USPS AND TX DOT plus hundreds of other commercials. Donise
has cast many feature films and industrials during her 18+
years as a Casting Director, but has always concentrated on
commercials. www.acastingplace.net

The workshop begins promptly at 10AM and lasts until
approximately 5PM. Parents are invited to stay as the day
begins with Donise giving you an overview of the industry, the
reality of the hard work involved, getting/keeping an agent,
marketing hints, networking opportunities and many insider tips
that only a Casting Director with her vast experience would know.
Whom better to take a class with than someone who has literally
conducted hundreds of thousands of auditions? Parents may either
stay or leave at this point and are invited back at 4:30PM to
view the last taped commercial of the day.

During the day, your teen will be constantly on camera auditioning
(using scripts from commercials that Donise has cast and are age
appropriate) in various types of scenarios, both solo and with
scene partners. Each commercial is taped, played and critiqued
on an individual basis. You'll be astonished at your teen's
improvement throughout the day.

If your teen is serious about the business, this is the best way
to get started. If your teen is already active, this is the best
way to take their career to the next level.

We will take a short lunch break and order pizza. Feel free to
bring your teen's lunch, if you prefer, or $5 for pizza (per person).

A few days before the workshop, we will send you a reminder together
with a list of suggested brings and information regarding Class Act
Dallas/TWP, Forest Central One, 11520 North Central Expressway,
Suite 151, Dallas, TX 75243, where classes will be held.

Individualized attention to you is of paramount importance, so
enrollment is strictly limited to 14 students. Please send the
Registration Slip below, together with your payment of $165 (check
may be dated February 21st) and mail to:

Donise Hardy, P. O. Box 1211, Georgetown, TX 78627

You do not have a confirmed reservation until the Registration
Slip and payment have been received.

We abide by the State of Texas Refund Policy.

Please e-mail Donise at donise@... if you have
any questions.

We will be holding auditions on Saturday, Feb. 20 for a new Comedy
Webseries (title pending). The auditions will be held from 9:00 am to
3:30 pm at the Houston Improv.

We are looking for:

2 male leads, 18-24

and

Multiple secondary roles, Male and Female, 18-45

Quick character breakdown:

Will - Attractive, chauvinistic, rich kid with very little morals and a
dry sense of humor.

Pete - The yang to Will’s yin. Sympathetic, moral, and a bit nerdy.

Show synopsis:

Will and Pete are roommates pursuing their undergrads. The series will
feature short episodes documenting the adventures and shenanigans of
Will and Pete.

We will start filming in March. Weekend availability is a MUST, as our
primary shooting will take place on Saturdays (morning - afternoon) and
Friday & Sunday as needed (morning-afternoon-night). The male leads must
be available to shoot on weekends for the next two months as we are
going to shoot around 8-10 episodes (one episode per week). Secondary
characters will only be needed in their respective episodes.

We will be shooting in the Houston area only. We have equipment (will be
shooting on DV) and a small crew.

This is a NON-PAYING gig, at least for now, but is a great opportunity
to get more acting experience, network with some great, experienced
filmmakers and crew and can lead to more projects. These webisodes will
be featured on its own website and then will be shopped around to
various networks. The sky is the limit.

Please email houstonindiecomedy@...
<mailto:houstonindiecomedy@...> for more information about the
show, secondary characters and auditions. Thank you.
