Subject: Using custom Master Templates in a shared edit environment??

Hey everybody

Is there a way to use a Master Template I created and have it not show up as
offline on other edit systems? We're running FCP 7 with MetaSAN here, all media
on the shared drives.

I created a new Master Template, cut it into my show several times and happily
re-edited the text from with FCP. Now, the assistant opens up the sequence, and
all those title/graphics are offline.

I know I can save normal Motion files to the shared drives (MetaSAN) and have it
work just fine...but when I copied the Master Template file out of the Library
directory where it gets saved by default and re-imported it, the ability to edit
the copy from within FCP is lost.

What's the workaround? Surely series-wide elements are what these templates are
built for...

Have any of you seen where an exported QT file will change it's date
modified just by opening the file in FCP? The files are finished
shows and only being opened, looked at then closed. There is no re-
exporting of the file or any editing done.

Other details:
XSan 1.X.X environment (will find out exact version)
Mixed Leopard and Tiger installs

ISO:  Multi Screen Editor

Hello Everyone..

I'm still looking for submissions of multi-screen editors. I've received a
couple of resumes but would love to see more choices before making making a
decision.

This is a non-union gig for a 5 screen show. Rate is comparable for themed
entertainment. We are looking for an editor who has multi-screen experience, is
VERY easy to get along with and handles multiple changes with ease, who can
create our animatic and if he/she has music video experience - all the better.

This is a great opportunity for an editor to think outside the box and push
their skills as well. The final product is the feature movie at the USA Pavilion
at the Shanghai World Expo opening May 1 2010.

Please respond only to my email, do not post to group.

Hi Kerry,

> Am I simply being too sentimental?
No. I guess it's just normal behavior of Mac fans! ;)

> Is it time to retire this old horse?
If you need a computer for work - YES, replace it (before Bob Z. destroys it)!
But for personal use it is probably fine. Or give it to your wife / kids (if you
have), other relatives or anyone else who needs a computer. A PowerBook or
MacBook with an AirPort card is great - me, my wife, lots of friends and
relatives enjoy going online wireless since years! :) And for sure that's what
my kids get in a few years when they're old enough!

I'm still having a G3 PowerBook (stunning 333MHz!) with an AirPort card (11Mb)
at home and use it from time to time, although the battery is dead. I don't have
a wired network at home so AirPort is great and I can plug in the power supply
wherever I am at home, so it's fine for me! :)

And yes, I must be crazy to have at least 15 Macs (that I don't use regularly or
some of them no more) at home - a few of the are even NuBus machines. But I just
can't throw them away and it's fun to show people how computers looked like and
worked years ago..

Greetings from a german Apple / Avid / FCP support guy!

When I installed Snow Leopard the monitor default display changed.

See this Apple KB article
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3712

To better serve the needs of consumers and digital content producers, Mac OS X
v10.6 Snow Leopard uses a gamma value of 2.2 by default. In versions of Mac OS
X prior to 10.6, the default system gamma value was 1.8. Using the capabilities
of ColorSync, the gamma value of 2.2 is automatically applied and seamlessly
transitions your display, images and videos to the new gamma value.

itself. For instance, the ACDs I have do not use 2.2 as Apple's default gamma
when I select the preset profile. You have to create a profile that is
specifically set to 2.2 gamma. I think the difference is how QT X and FCP
display files within their own UI that has changed.

I'm not so sure that it will really be any different. The gamma change from what
I can tell with SL is how the app displays the image, not the display itself.

I will when my Ti-Book is ready, take the components out, flip the
monitor around, mount them in a picture frame, hang it on the wall and
run a screensaver with all my photos changing every 5 min or so. Neat
little picture frame with 5,000 + pictures that randomly change.
If you have an airport card in it you can add or remove pictures
without ever touching it. ANd to solve the power problem have your
favorite electrician drop a power box into the wall behind the frame
and like magic it runs for ever.

This is much easier to do in Snow Leopard which now has the same gamma as
Windows.

You could recalibrate your monitor to match Windows gamma. You may still need to
tweak gamma settings when creating files but at least you're looking at a
display with the same gamma setting as Windows rather than painting by numbers.

A bit displeased with my current bunch of WMVs - the blacks and midtones of what
I see on the PC aren't what I'm seeing in the source QT.

I'm using Squeeze 5 - anyone have a nice "windows gamma" filter setting to
share?

OK to keep it on topic, I have no problem running FCP 5.0.4 on this system and
it might even run FCP6.

A Dual 800 with Leopard works just fine if you're doing basic DV editing.

As I mentioned before it runs Phone Valet for my VIDEO business. Old Macs do
just fine handling many non video tasks for your video business so I hope it's
topical enough. There's no reason to pay $599 on a new MacMini for such tasks.

You lead Final Cut NLE today may still be able to do small projects and answer
your phone nearly 10 years from now. Try doing that on your 10 year old Windows
Adobe Premiere system (or even Avid).

It's very easy to do. I believe it installs into parameter ram and then you
install Leopard from the retail install disk by tricking it into thinking you
meet the 867MHz PPC minimum.

OT conversations are usually tolerated here on FCP-L. But let's keep those
OT conversations brief.

We've covered enough ground in the Dead Ti-Book thread. Kerry doesn't (well,
shouldn't) need more input from us.

So on to the next issue...

Craig, please tell me the 'minor hack' used to make your dual 800 run
Leopard. I'm in the same boat. Damned thing is a workhorse. No
sense in tossing it. I would just like to keep it somewhat current.

Last year I finally gave away a Beige G3 with EditDV and the non standard
firewire card used with it. The Beige G3 itself was capable of running OS
10.2.8. The built in Zip drive failed and the external SCSI hard drive failed. I
gave it to a friend to give to their church since they needed a very basic
computer for word processing and such.

I have a Dual 800 still going quite strong. With a minor hack it runs Leopard
just fine although iPhoto 09 is very slow. Amongst other things, it's the office
answering machine running Phone Valet.

Hey I still collect or even buy old iMac G3's and give them to Cub
Scout Troups as instant replay devices for Pinewood Derby racing.

iMovie/OS9/DV works fine and no funky VGA adaptors to lose.

Most of all; no one wants to steal it from them, so they last years!

When I can afford a new laptop I'm thinking my G4 powerbook will
retire as a music device permanently hooked to my stereo. I bet you
can buy a used hard drive for pretty little money.

Our 512 Mac (later upgraded to a Mac Plus) is on display in the hall,
above a 1950s mahogany veneer 405-line television.

That Mac was our first business computer 20 years ago. Remember
swapping between the program and data floppies?

Computers were never going to be fast enough to deal with video...

Who says the folks on this list can't be compassionate?

I'm going to print this reply and paste it up on my wall.

Of course, I can't remember the last time I used this computer for billable
work. Oh wait, it was April 2008 and that was only as a backup when my then
iMac died. So it isn't that I consider this an investment, rather an old
friend. Perhaps I should have it stuffed and hung from the wall. Hmmmmmmm.

I'd say, if your time is free, and only if your time is free, you
could simply get another hard drive and put it in yourself. Should be
worth the 80 bucks or you might pay to have a machine that is somewhat
workable. I usually buy hard drives at mwave.com, they have the
cheapest prices.

Do not spend more than $80.00 in, is my advice.
