A New Kind of Anti-War Film?
The film I would like to see made is not likely to be a big moneymaker. No
anti-war film
is, unless Michael Moore makes it, but even his boxoffice did not win the
election nor slow
down the war. Like all movies promoting peace, his preached to the converted.
My objective is the first anti-war or peace movement to have an effect.
The general public always supports force when provoked by fear. To paraphrase
Nazi
Propaganda Minister Goebbels speaking at the Nuremburg trials, "Starting war is
easy.
You just get the people scared."
Peace is not so easy, as history shows. As I point out in reference to my Hopi
films on
www.venicevisionarymedia.net, the Hopi record of a thousand years of peace is
many
hundreds of years beyond the peace enjoyed by any other society since the dawn
of
human agriculture. Wars now are everywhere, all the time.
The only chance I see for a film which might have a genuine effect in promoting
peace
would be educational. The rich and powerful who run the world and arrange the
wars all
send their children to college. These future leaders would be the target
audience for a
film explaining how and why most wars are started—that is, with lies and for
power and
profit. The script I see would follow a selection of docudrama scenes from wars
through
history, as the lies and powers and profits have grown. A theatrical version
might be a
mockumentary comedy called HOW TO START A WAR, but for an education version, to
get
distribution probably requires playing it mostly straight, focusing on the
chilling intrigues
which produce the violence. Research is necessary to be accurate. A number of
locations
and cultures would be needed. Animation might be an alternative.
While I would like to make such a film, never having made a film for peace, I do
not at this
time have access to the necessary financing. I would offer whatever help I
could—to
anyone and everyone else who would take the idea and make it, or to anyone who
would
want to work cooperatively. I have done writing, producing, directing, some
editing, even
some camera.
