One way
or another, established filmmakers need to help train the next generation.
Some schools are great, others send graduates into the world with no idea of scheduling
or budgeting and little concept of hiring a crew or running a shoot.
Budgeting and scheduling, business plans and cash flow, the whole prep process,
in fact, is unique to film. And it’s extraordinarily complex.
There are no shortcuts when you need to turn a screenplay into a movie. And
those who try usually end up a few reels short of a film. We work in one
of the few fields where art and business are inextricably intertwined. And
it’s essential to learn that grounding.
Jim, Brian, thanks for the plug. I do indeed teach a variety of courses, all
online, some for total beginners, others for established filmmakers who need to
learn a program or brush up on some technique. But I work in two-hour
segments. It’s okay, but not always ideal. If anyone is based
in LA, I’d strongly recommend Jim’s in-depth, intense
instruction.
