I hope your summer's been great.  I just want to remind everyone who is a member of Filmmakers' Ambitions during Spring Quarter to e-mail me at steven@....  Remember, the two requirements are to attend at least one meeting and be involved in the making of a film.

Hello Fellow Filmmakers!
Here's the Update:
 
FA BOWLING NIGHT (FINAL FA MEETING!)
Tuesday, May 31st
8:30pm in MEMORIAL UNION GAMES AREA
Join fellow FA members in the final FA meeting, bowling at the MU Games Area!  The cost is only $1 per game for each person, and we have 4 lanes reserved.  You're also welcome to bring guests (this is an open event - members and non-members welcome, especially non-members interested in the aspect of filmmaking).
 
THE 2 REQUIREMENTS OF BEING A FA MEMBER!
1.  Go to at least one general meeting in the quarter.
2.  During the quarter, make or participate in the making of a film (ANY film).  Screenplays of all lengths count whether or not they are made into a movie yet.  Acting counts.  All behind the scenes work counts.  Also, anything we make at our meetings counts (so if you haven't help make a movie, yet - come to the last meeting of the quarter, and this requirement will be satisfied.)

If you have satisfied the second requirement, you must email steven@... the title and a brief description of the project you worked on.
 
THEATRE/DANCE STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL
A festival of original films and videos directed, shot, and acted by UC Davis students.  It will be held in the Wright Hall Main Theatre at 8pm on May 31-June 1.  All tickets $5.
 
ROBOTMEDIA
Saturday, June 4th
8:00pm in CHEM 194
For more information, go to the Robotmedia website.  Submissions are due to Adam Burgett (ajburgett@...) a week before the showcase.

As a fundraiser for the website and other FA things, we are offering subdomain 30 Megabyte spaces each for $5 per year.  So, if you want a cheap way to put up a filmography, resume, personal website or Production website that doesn't have pop-ups - give us a five dollar bill, pick a blank.FAfilms.com and we'll give you 30 megabytes of space (enough to put several short films on)!  For more info, email Andrew at andrew@... or talk to one of the officers after the meetings.

Hey guys - this is just a casual invitation to y'all.  Tonight is Filmmakers' Ambitions' BILLIARDS NIGHT.  We're going to watch Scorsese's "The Color of Money" and then play pool at the MU games area.  Bring $5 if you want to do both, or it's free if you're just seeing the movie.

GREEN SCREEN
The drama department has officially approved FA's request to put up green screen fabric in the Arena Theatre in Wright Hall.  The room is very similar to a sound stage.  We will be collaborating with them on the details.

Hopefully, your finals are over... if not, try not to kill yourself - there is still a long and great career in filmmaking ahead of you.   :)
 
Here's the Update:
 
Have you gone to at least one meeting this quarter?
If so... you still have one more thing to do to become a member for FALL 2004.  If you haven't already done so, email Steven at fkywong@... what you have done filmmaking-related this quarter.  That is, what film(s) have you worked on?  This can be ANY film.  Also, writing a screenplay counts (even if it has not yet been turned into a film).  Acting counts.  Behind the scenes counts.  Directing, of course, counts.  Etc. Etc. Etc.  Email steven.
 
Want to show your new film at the FA showcase?
At the end of next quarter (Winter 2005), FA will have a showcase of all FA films made since the last showcase (Winter 2004).  All films with the FA Logo are eligible to be shown.  So, make films!

LAST MEETING OF THE QUARTER
Wednesday, December 8th
8:30pm in YOUNG 198
After the announcements, David Chiu will be directing a short short from the series YOUNG 198.  Come and watch and participate.
 
THE 2 REQUIREMENTS OF BEING A MEMBER!
1.  Go to at least one general meeting in the quarter.
2.  During the quarter, make or participate in the making of a film (ANY film).  Screenplays of all lengths count whether or not they are made into a movie yet.  Acting counts.  All behind the scenes work counts.  Also, anything we make at our meetings counts (so if you haven't help make a movie, yet - come to the last meeting of the quarter, and this requirement will be satisfied.)

If you have satisfied the second requirement, email fkywong@... the title and a brief description of the project you worked on.
 
MAKE FILMS DURING THE WINTER BREAK!

With that, here's the update:
 
THIRD FA MEETING OF THE QUARTER
Watch "Vincent", Tim Burton's early short.  The meeting's topic will be "Technical Essentials."  Come join us for a talk on the equipment necessities.  This talk will be especially good for beginners in filmmaking.
3rd General FA Meeting

GREEN SCREEN
We are planning on spending around 250 dollars on green screens.  More information will be presented by Daniel Leighton and Andrew Cholerton this coming meeting.  Suggestions on where/how to spend the money are welcome.
 
"YOUNG 198" The series.
Want a chance to write and direct a film? Every once in a while, after the meetings (normally when people hang out and talk) a member will have had the chance to come up with a script and film it within a one hour time block after the meeting. The requirements for the script are 1. that it be short (at least filmable within the time constraints) 2. that they must use EVERYBODY who sticks around as extras (unless they're part of the crew). 3. That the film take place ONLY in YOUNG 198 --- this is part of an ongoing list of fun FA short series called "Young 198". 
 
ROBOT MEDIA SHOWCASE
This Saturday, November 20th
8:00pm in CHEM 194
Come support fellow filmmaker shorts that fall under the themes, "Great Expectations," and "A day in the life of..."
 
THE FA LOGO
The FA logo appears on films that are written, produced, or directed by an FA member.  It purely exists as a way to promote the club and expresses our pride of being a UC Davis filmmaker.  (It is by no means required for membership.)   Films with this logo will also be shown at the FA showcases, they will be noted on the website, and archived with the club's historian - and in the future, put online.  For more information on what the FA logo looks like, check out:  http://fafilms.homestead.com/logo.html.

This will be a small meeting for Filmmakers' Ambitions newbies and prospective members.  We will have a short presentation, question/answer, and there will be time to meet other new members as well as the current officers.  Here's the date/time:

Come back for another year of workin' the filmmaking network.  Critique "The Craving," a ten minute horror made by several of the FA officers.  And remember the homework assignment: to bring a list (on a piece of paper) of your three most inspiring filmmakers.  Here's the date/time of the meeting:

FA INFO NIGHT

Are you new to Filmmakers' Ambitions?  Have you never gone to a meeting?  Are you sitting there, thinking 'I have nothing to do on the night of November first... what, oh what am I gonna do?'  Then come to the FA INFO NIGHT, a special pre-meeting dedicated to answering all your questions about Filmmakers' Ambitions.  We will have a short presentation and it will be a good chance for you to meet other newbies as well as the officers of the club.  FA INFO NIGHT is not required for membership.  Here's the date/time:

FIRST GENERAL MEETING of fall quarter

Come back and see the familiar faces of your fellow filmmakers at the first meeting of the new year.  We will be watching/critiquing "The Craving" (ten minute short FA Films production,) talking about the new year, and going over your homework assignment (What!?  Homework?!). Here's the date/time:

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT DUE AT FIRST GENERAL MEETING

Yes, you have homework!  Here's the basic idea: 

Come up with a list of three big people in filmmaking who you'd like to write to (can be writer/producer/director, anything).  Bring the list on a piece of paper with your name in the corner to the meeting.  The officers will find out what the mailing adress is to one of the people on your list, and will come back at the Second meeting with adresses.  From there - we'll do an experiment.  Everybody will write to their respective filmmaker, and we'll see see how many people get responses throughout the quarter. 

 

Tips on picking your three people:

-people who own production companies will be the easiest to write to.  (as they can always be reached at their company adress)

-the bigger the better.  (Small time, like foreign filmmakers will have less information available about them on the web tool we will be using)

-these should be people you've always dreamt of talking to and telling them how great they are.  (Writing a letter to these people will be a breeze.)

-Put your first choice on top, and your third choice on the bottom.

 

FLYERING AND ADVERTISING

The officers will be flyering the school this coming week.  Join us!  Email Julie if you'd like to help out.  Julie should be putting the flyers on FAcommunity as well - so you guys can download, print, copy and distribute them on your own.  Also, remember to tell other filmmakers about this club!  The more people that come to the club, the more connections you and others can make!
