Hey guys, Matt here.
This is just a warning that Professor Beal (the guest
speaker tonight) might not be able to make it. (I
know... again). But it is still up in the air, she
hopes she can make it, but if she can't - the
meeting's topic of "Cinematography" will be the
night's focus. I'm hoping to bring my camera and
maybe have some activities.
Remember, if you HAVEN'T been to a meeting yet this
quarter, come tonight. If you volunteer to do
something with the camera during the meeting - you're
second requirement to be a member will be fulfilled as
well!
See you all tonight!
-Matt

must attend at least one FA meeting. And Second, you
must have participated in the making of a film

Hello Fellow Filmmakers!
Here's the updates:
-Next FA Meeting
This Wednesday, March 3rd 8:30pm in Young 198
Topic will be:
"Getting Actors, Auditioning (preproduction)"
-GREEN SCREEN: We are in the process of getting all
permissions and specifics for the GREEN SCREEN. If
you want to check out the room to be painted, go to
Wright Hall and check out Room 120. Info on the room
below (from Theatre-Dance Website):
--The flexible "black box" Arena Theatre is in room
120 Wright Hall. Arena Theatre seats 100 people on
portable audience risers, allowing the audience-stage
relationship to be changed to meet the particular
requirements of each production. The Arena Theatre has
an ETC Express lighting control console and 32 2.4K
ETC sensor dimmers.
--We estimated the green screen to be 30x17 feet -
which to paint would cost about 200 dollars.
--In addition, we were thinking about buying a smaller
roll-out blue-screen for close-up shots - approx. 100
dollars.
-ROBOT MEDIA: Go to Robot Media! See Student Films!
This Saturday, March 6th at 6pm in CHEM 194. FREE.
See what kinds of films were made with the topics
"Legos" and "Vikings".
See you all at the Meeting!
Sincerely,
-Matthew Brewbaker, pres.

100 Easy Steps to Get You Started with FA.
NOTE* The two requirements
to be an FA member:
-Attend at least one
meeting
-Make or Participate in the
making of at least one film
The following steps will
guide you toward becoming an active member of FA
Step 3: Plan a Film or Join somebody on their project (at
least once a quarter to be a member)
-This
is where knowing others in FA can be useful. Make sure to always stay after
the meetings and meet other filmmakers!
-You
don’t have to direct a film. Any kind of role in filmmaking, from writing,
producing, acting, booming, gripping, etc, etc. is acceptable and all qualify
to fulfill the FA requirement
-or
tell Vice President of Production (Carlos Montoya)
Step 5: Post Production - editing
-Obtain
a copy of “the essentials”. An FA CD full of cool FA stuff and things to get
your computer in *edit* mode – talk to VP of Information, Jeff Wang.
-Make
sure to put the FA logo (located on “Essentials” CD) on your project.
Step 6: Distribution/Showcases/Publicity
-In
order to give people experience with publicity, showcases will be put into the
hands of member volunteers (rather than the officers). If you would like to
start and head a showcase of any kind (of FA stuff, your own stuff, or even of Indie/Industry
films) talk to the officers, and if approved, a showcase committee will be open
for other volunteers. These volunteers will be in charge of publicizing,
showcasing, and concessions for a showcase. FA will help you get any room on
Campus that is available
-VP
of Public Relations (Julie Chow) is in charge of flyering, chalking, etc. During
weeks in which there needs to be flyering, chalking or other advertising, the
VP of PR will be putting together a week-by-week flyering team consisting of
members who are nice enough to offer their help.
Step 7 – 100: Have fun!
-The club was formed to help filmmakers get to know
other filmmakers; to form friendships and connections. Go to the meetings, go
to the activities. Make films! But by all means, whatever you do in FA, make
sure you’re having fun doing it.
Hello Fellow Filmmakers!
Here's the update:
-2nd meeting of the quarter:
General F.A. Meeting
This Wednesday, Feb. 4th
8:30pm, Room Young 198
Topic: Directing Actors
As always, stay after to talk with other filmmakers
and share ideas.
-If you have any projects you're working on. Tell
F.A. and go to
http://fafilms.homestead.com/currentprojects.html and
click on the link at the bottom.
-Microcinema League of Davis, is a new community forum
online for Davis Filmmakers, check it out:
http://www.livejournal.com/community/microcinema_lod/
-SHORTS AND EARLY WORKS
Our VP, Jeff Wang is doing a new thing on Tuesdays.
Go watch famous directors' early works, as well as
infuential shorts every tuesday. Rooms locations will
vary. Tomorrow evening (Tuesday, February 3rd), there
will be a screening of Roman Polanski's early films,
including his student work and his debut, Knife in the
Water.

Tuesday, February 3rd

Hello Fellow Filmmakers!
Here's the Update:
- Have you gone to an FA meeting but have not
participated in a Film yet, and need to in order to
become a member??? Show up Friday (Today) December
5th from 7pm to 9pm at CHEM 194. Jeff and I will hold
an "intensive" filmmaking project, where whoever
decides to come, will quickly come up with a script,
and then we will film it. Anybody can show up!
- If you HAVE participated in a film, please email and
tell Carlos Montoya at afrshk00@... if you
havn't already done so. Tell him the name of the
project, what you did on the project, and (briefly)
what the project is about. Writing, Directing, Crew,
Acting, Extras, ANYTHING involving filmmaking counts.
If you are currently writing a piece, that hasn't yet
been perfected, this is fine too. As long as you have
worked or are currently working on something.
- The HERO showcase, once again, will not be happening
today, it'll happen NEXT quarter.
- Robot Media News: The next robot media will be
January 18th. The deadline will be a week before the
showcase. So make films over the holiday break! The
two topics will be "Fried Chicken" and "Uncomfortable
moments".
-The tentative meeting time next quarter will be
Wednesday at 8:30 instead of Thursday at 8:30.
-FA website: Just a reminder that the handouts we
distribute to each different meeting will be put onto
the website at
http://www.fafilms.homestead.com/handouts.html
Thursday's handout by Trey Parker (creator of South
Park) can be found there too. Read it! I found it
very inspirational.
Okay that's it for now. Have lots of fun with your
finals and good luck with your holiday break. (or
something like that)
MAKE FILMS!!
Sincerely,
Matthew Brewbaker, Pres.

Hello Fellow Filmmakers!
Here are the updates:
-There was no meeting on Thanksgiving day... yeah, duh
-LAST MEETING of quarter
This Thursday, Dec 4th
8:30pm at Young 198
Meeting's topic will be: Film Schools
The LAST meeting of the quarter will be this coming
one, on Thursday Dec 4th. If you havn't come to a
meeting yet and still want to be a member, go to this
one. It will be in Young 198 at the usual time,
8:30pm.
-The action-movie HERO showcase will be this Friday!
Writer/Director Antoine Le will be driving up from LA
to answer any questions. If you want to see the
biggest FA film that was made last year, come and see
it! We will also be premiering other movies that have
never been seen yet, including Julie Chow's
"Anniversary" and the two "Noir Cigs" Commercials by
Jeff Wang and Matt Brewbaker. If you have a movie
that you would like to premiere at the showcase, a
movie that you have not yet shown at the UCD campus
(no RobotMedia films) then email back and we'll put it
in.
- As the quarter ends, we will be tallying up all the
members of Fall quarter, 2003. A list of members will
be put up on the website. Remember... to qualify to
be a member, you must 1. Go to at least one meeting of
the club and 2. Participate in the making of at least
one movie. (Doesn't have to be your own nor does it
have to be an FA film to qualify). We keep attendance
at our meetings. But we rely on you guys to tell us
about the films you've been involved in. All
attendance questions should go to the secretary,
Steven Wong, and all movie participation questions
should go to VP of Production, Carlos Montoya.
-If you havn't had the chance to participate in a
film, either make a quick one starring your pet
hamster. Or stay tuned, we may have a film intensive
this next weekend or sometime where we go out and film
for two hours, making a short but quick movie for
those who need the credit to be a member.
-Once again, if you would like to participate in the
HERO showcase, then reply back and say so. We still
need a few more people so please help!
Remember to think about filmmaking whenever you have
free time on this long weekend!
Sincerely,
-Matthew Brewbaker, President

Hello Filmmaking Enthusiasts!
First of all, I would like to appologize if any of you
read the website's info and showed up on Wednesday
instead of Thursday for the meeting. I promise I
won't make another mistake like that again.
OK, here are the updates:
-Meetings have been voted to be every Thursday at
8:30pm in Young 198... Next Meeting is Thursday
November 6th at 8:30pm in Young 198 - the Weekly Topic
will be *Editing*.
-Make sure to join FAcommunity and FAdiscuss at...
respectively:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FAcommunityhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/FAdiscuss
-It has become inefficient to have our list serve run
out of our Yahoo!Mail account. We will be in the
process of transferring your names to FAupdates
Yahoo!Group. To join this list-serve (which obviously
you guys don't need to do) one must either 1. email
filmmakersambitions@... and ask to be put on or
2. go to groups.yahoo.com/group/FAupdates and join
directly
-At the meeting last night, we had some technical
difficulties and couldn't provide the document "100
Easy steps to getting started with FA" attached is
that Document. Please take the time to read it.
-The first FAactivity will be "Bowling Night" proposed
to be Friday, November 14th at 7pm. We will showcase
a bowling movie (most likely either "Bowling for
Columbine, The big Lebowski or Kingpin) After which,
we will go bowling in the MU.
-Robot Media (www.robotmedia.com/davis) will be
accepting films that fall under the topics "Perfect
World" and "Soliciting" until November 17th. All
films must be under 5 minutes. So make films for the
showcase, which will be showcased November 22nd.
All right, that's it! Enjoy the weekend - and if you
have time, make films!!
Sincerely,
Matt Brewbaker, President

Hello Filmmaking Enthusiasts!
This is just a quick update as to what's happening
with FA for the new School Year.
-Flyering has begun! Look for our flyers around
campus - they should be distributed fully by monday
afternoon. If you see other flyers on top of ours,
rip them off. :)
-If you would like to be involved in chalking, we will
be doing that scatteredly within the next two weeks.
Please email Julie at jichow@....
-Visit our booth at the Activities Faire! This Wed.
Oct. 15th from 10-2pm we will have a booth out on the
Quad. Tell anybody who's interested in the club to
see us there. And if you're bored, come visit.
- Info night(s) are tentatively planned to be on Oct.
22nd and Oct. 23rd at 8:30. (location not yet known).
These info nights are particularly for those who want
to know information about FA before they start
attending meetings. But returnees are totally
welcome.
-There seems to be a general concensus that Wednesday
nights will be the nights that FA will have the weekly
meetings. This is tentative, though.
-Other filmmaking things: Robot Media will have it's
info-night/showcase on Oct. 15th at 8:30pm in Haring
2205. Robot Media is a movie-making showcase, that
accepts student movies that fall under two given
topics. The showcase in November will showcase the
two topics "solicitation," and "perfect-life". The
info-night will showcase some that were made last
year.
Sincerely,
-Matthew Brewbaker, president.

What's up?
How was your summer? Did you get to make any movies or
at least see any good ones? It's a new year, it's hot
as heck, and the freshmen look like middle school
students... Hopefully your classes are going well and
you don't have too much homework 'cause it's the
perfect time to start making movies.
Soon enough, we'll be having our first FA meeting
where we'll discuss what will be happening with the
club in this next year and, most importantly, get each
other's movies off the ground. I'll keep you updated -
have fun.
Sincerely,
Jeff Wang

Email sent to members - 4/21/03
Hello everyone,
This last Saturday FA had an Info Night for
prospective members. We had a small turnout but those
who showed up got to know the officers pretty well.
For those of you who weren't able to attend, here are
some of the things we talked about:
The Officers:
Matt Brewbaker
Antoine Le
Daniel Leighton
Elizabeth Upton
Jameeley Pineda
Jeff Wang
Each officer introduced her/himself and showed clips
of their work.
Past and Upcoming Projects (can be viewed on website)
Mission Statement: The purpose of "Filmmakers'
Ambitions" is to teach the business and art of
filmmaking, while establishing a network between
student filmmakers here at University of California,
Davis. This organization is made possible for those
interested in pursuing filmmaking as a career in both
Industry and Independent film.
Requirements:
1) Be involved in some behind-the-scenes role in at
least one project per quarter,
2) Be considering filmmaking as a career
What to expect:
FA will facilitate as a network for members to find
the resources to make their films. At regular meetings
(which will be either weekly or bimonthly), people will
give updates on how their projects are shaping up,
what kind of assistance they need, what they hope to
do, etc. At this point, those who are willing to
assist can exchange phone numbers, etc.
Matt is also proposing to create Filmmakers' Ambitions
Actors Association (FAAA), which will be online, where
actors can post their resumes, photos and contact info
if finding performers is ever a problem for FA
members.
Screenplays and/or other material pertaining to future
projects can be posted on the website for other people
to view. Just send an email with your attachment and
we'll put it up.
Equipment:
Matt and Elizabeth both have cameras but will also be
using them on their own projects. A resource is the
theater department; they have lights, cameras and
sound mikes. If you're interested in using this
equipment, ask Matt, who will get it for you.
Film Studies Minor:
The Film Studies Minor only requires that you take 6
classes - Humanities 10 and 5 upper division. There
are 6-8 classes offered each quarter that will fulfill
the requirement. I'm the peer advisor so please send
me an email at jcswang@... if you'd like to
find out more or if you'd like a curriculum sheet of
what classes will work for the minor.
Thanks a lot to those who attended; we know there's a
lot of you who weren't able to make it and hopefully
we'll see you next time. Don't hesitate if you have
any questions. Hope you all had a nice weekend.
Jeff
