Teenagers who've overcome a troubled life thanks to Father Chris Riley, the founder and CEO of Youth Off The Streets, got to meet a Hollywood star last night.

But Aussie actor Eric Bana says HE's the one who's been inspired.

It is the second year he has attended the organisation's annual dinner, which he says tops any Hollywood awards night or movie premier.

'One of the best nights I had last year was coming here and listening to some of these stories,' he says.

'I think in society we get inspired by things like sport, but a night like tonight.. you just can't touch it.'

Over one hundred Australians have been helped by the program, which has been running for six years.

Youth Off The Streets is a charity organisation that provides essential services such as crisis accommodation for homeless youth, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and education to ensure disadvantaged and disengaged young people are given the opportunity to turn their life around.

People.com article By Stephen M. Silverman

Eric Bana may not be known for comic roles, but that's only onscreen. Married to the former Rebecca Gleeson since 1997 and the father of two kids – Klaus, 10, and Sophie, 7 – the Australian star of The Time Traveler's Wife suggests there's really one ingredient for keeping relationships running smoothly: good, old-fashioned belly laughs.

"My wife and I really, really like each other as well as love each other," Bana, 41, tells Women's Health for its September issue, now on sale. "We definitely laugh together every day. And I don't mean chuckle – I can make her really laugh."

Not that he's suggesting a guy go solo in the guffaw department. "A girl's got to be fun," he insists. "It's the one bit of advice I always give to friends of mine who are thinking of getting married."

On the serious matter of choosing a partner, "I think love can come fairly easily and grow – but really liking the core essence of someone is a much harder thing to bottle. If you have both, you're in pretty good shape," he says, while also noting that women "are so much better wired than men to deal with multiple things at once. They're better at dealing with background noise and multitasking."

For instance? "If I'm writing something down while my wife wants to give me instructions for something else, I have to put my hand up and say, 'Let me finish my one task and then I will take the next.' It's weird."

ric Bana says the key to a happy marriage is to tie the knot with someone you ''really like'' and can make you laugh.

Eric Bana only lets his friends marry "fun" women."

The 'Time Traveler's Wife' star, who wed publicist Rebecca Gleeson in 1997, believes laughter is the key to a successful marriage.

He said: "A girl's got to be fun. It's the one bit of advice I always give to friends of mine who are thinking of getting married.

"I think love can come fairly easily and grow - but really liking the core essence of someone is a much harder thing to bottle. If you have both, you're in pretty good shape. My wife and I really, really like each other as well as love each other. We definitely laugh together every day. And I don't mean chuckle - I can make her really laugh."

Eric - who has two children with Rebecca, 10-year-old Klaus and Sophia, seven - also admits he is amazed by his wife's ability to do more than one thing at a time.

The 41-year-old hunk explained to Women's Health magazine: "Women are so much better wired than men to deal with multiple things at once. They're better at dealing with background noise and multitasking. If I'm writing something down while my wife wants to give me instructions for something else, I have to put my hand up and say, 'Let me finish my one task and then I will take the next.' It's weird."

Style icon Eric Bana looks spiffy in a suit on the September 2009 cover of Men's Health. Here's what the 41-year-old Aussie actor shared:

On driving (and crashing) race cars: "It's something you look back on and realize how lucky you were. But I've crashed before and I've chased since. I guess what makes this one significant is the fact that I really convinced myself I would never crash because I was driving that car (1974 Ford Falcon XB Coupe). If it were any other race car, I wouldn't have been bothered at all."

On loving the Big Apple: "I loved New York, even back then (1980s graffiti-scarred, pre-Giuliani New York). It was such an overwhelming animal. I loved the energy and attitude of the place. It's great for being productive and creative."

On the anonymity he finds in Melbourne: "I embrace the two different lives. There's not meeting in the middle. There's not island between the two that allows them to coexist… Australians are bred to be antiestablishment. We're wary of authority."

ERIC BANA, AUSTRALIAN FUNNYMAN (REALLY!) AND HOLLYWOOD STAR, HAS A FONDNESS FOR ICONIC AMERICA, INCLUDING THE CLASSIC NAVY SUIT

Men's Health artticle by: Sandra Nygaard; Photograph by: Chris Colls

Eric Bana loves cars and loves America...

...and he was in love with the idea of a cross-country adventure when he arrived here 20 years ago, a naive Australian. His plan: Drive across the land like Kerouac, in a '79 Mustang, and try his luck at stand-up comedy.

Six months and thousands of miles later, the dream was pretty well battered. He'd endured lonely nights sleeping in the car, wrong turns through crack neighborhoods, and a middle-of-the-night escape from Nashville.

Still, one gritty city charmed him.

"I loved New York, even back then," says the 41-year-old actor. "It was such an overwhelming animal. I loved the energy and attitude of the place." This was the graffiti-scarred, pre-Giuliani New York, with Times Square peep shows and mumbling crazies on the sidewalks.    And this was the pre-Hollywood Bana, before he traded in a successful Australian comedy career for roles in high-profile movies like Troy, Munich, and Star Trek, before making people laugh in Funny People and breaking hearts in The Time Traveler's Wife.

In America, Bana finds the energy and the positivity infectious. "It's great for being productive and creative," he says.

Back in Melbourne, he can be the anonymous guy next door, riding his bike or dropping off his two kids at school without TMZ cameras in pursuit. "I embrace the two completely different lives," he says. "There's no meeting the middle. There's no island between the two that allows them to coexist."

In Melbourne, Bana and his longtime mates tinker with his beloved 1974 Ford Falcon XB coupe, or test their skills on the racetrack. The solitude of racing is alluring. "It's as relaxing as it is exhilarating," Bana says. "You're by yourself with a single focus—nothing can penetrate the cabin. You're on your own."

In Australia, Bana's everyday wardrobe is jeans and a T-shirt. "I'm usually grossly underdressed," he says happily. But Bana has come to admire tailored clothing. "When someone is a good craftsman, I appreciate it," he says, naming John Varvatos, Calvin Klein, and Gucci as a few of his favorite labels. "I guess it comes from appreciating design when it comes to cars." But you won't catch him in an expensive suit at home in Melbourne. That's his Hollywood uniform. "I think everyone in my local café would literally stop talking if I walked in wearing a suit," he says with a chuckle. "They'd laugh at me."

Question authority
"Australians are bred to be antiestablishment," Bana says. "We're wary of authority." Adopt the same approach to the traditional navy suit. Don't settle for a conventional light-colored dress shirt when a black knit sweater can lend a sleek, contemporary vibe. The dark hues will read as monochromatic, creating the illusion of a longer, leaner frame.

Respect the classics, then update them
Bana bought his first car, a 1974 Ford Falcon XB coupe, when he was 15 years old, and has worked on it for 26 years. Clothes can be worked on as well. If you own a navy suit, consider updating it rather than buying a new one. Your tailor can freshen the look by nipping in the waist or taking up the body an inch. (The jacket should reach roughly the end of your fingertips.) If the shoulders don't fit, however, it's time to buy a new one—that alteration is expensive.

Stand out, subtly
Avoid a generic look by seeking out understated features, like contrast lapel stitching or a colorful lining. "When I look at an item on the rack, there needs to be one distinguishing feature that makes it pop," says Bana. "I look for a detail that I know I'll appreciate 5 years from now, not just at that moment." Side vents and subtle patterns, such as a tonal windowpane plaid, offer interest without looking flashy.

Show off your shape
Bana had to gain 30 pounds of flab for his breakthrough role as psychopath Mark Brandon Read in 2000's Chopper. After he lost the weight and regained muscle, Bana learned to highlight his physique with tailoring. "I love a slim-fitting suit," says Bana. "Tom Ford is a favorite." The low stance of a two-button suit will give you the appearance of a longer, leaner torso while creating a V shape. Double-breasted and three-button models can make even lean trunks look boxy.

Eric Bana may travel nude through time in The Time Traveler's Wife, but the Aussie actor has come to admire tailored clothing and a classic look in his own present-day life. "When someone is a good craftsman, I appreciate it," he tells Men's Health for their September cover story. "I guess it comes from appreciating design when it comes to cars." The actor counts Hollywood favorites like John Varvatos, Calvin Klein, Gucci and Tom Ford as a few of his favorite labels. And though he has an appetite for luxe labels when it comes to red carpet wear, Bana claims he really is just a jeans and T-shirt type of guy. "I'm usually grossly underdressed," he tells the magazine. "I think everyone in my local cafe would literally stop talking if I walked in wearing a suit. They'd laugh at me." But he still is a careful shopper. "When I look at an item on the rack, there needs to be one distinguishing feature that makes it pop. I look for a detail that I know I'll appreciate 5 years from now, not just at that moment." And something he has come to count on? "I love a slim-fitting suit — Tom Ford is a favorite." Now that's what we call style. With fashion and lifestyle magazines rolling out their September issues, it's time to take a look at the fashion selections being offered in them.

Men's Health, while not necessarily known as a fashion magazine but rather a men's lifestyle magazine, is the first to arrive with their "Fall '09 Guide to Style" issue, which features two covers featuring actor Eric Bana and 40 pages dedicated to previewing the Fall's upcoming looks.

The magazine starts with a how-to on how to wear one of the go-to colors of fall - gray - including ties, belts, shoes and accessories. Next is a brief but worthwhile look at New York's Jean Shop, which offers a selection of customizable denim, and certainly looks like a shop that warrants a visit if you're in NYC.

The first feature article highlights the return to American classics that is being shown by Claiborne, J. Crew, Woolrich, Pendleton and Banana Republic. While the article is brief, it does offer a chance to hear from some of the designers of each of these lines, and offers insight into what their key pieces will be this season. While Banana Republic continues to make high-quality staples, J. Crew is expanding into new ground that is leaving their reputation for simply being a "preppy" clothing line in the dust.

That is followed by a fashion profile on Justin Timberlake, and how his style has changed dramatically throughout his career. Timberlake offers some fashion tips which are fundamentally sound - nothing really groundbreaking, but good reminders of to approach putting your outfits together.

Australian actor Eric Bana is profiled as well, revealing his fondness for the classic American navy suit, as well as sharing some tips of his own, which seem a bit more practical than Timberlake's, as he relays tips on both picking out clothes and appreciating the subtle nuances in them that will make you both value what you have in your closet while making you look your best.

The issue closes with their five trends for Fall 2009 - the double-breasted suit, thick knits, modern prep, belted coats and long scarves. While each trend is given it's own page and photo, the examples of how to carry out each trend is sorely lacking, which seems to be what most men could benefit from.

Of course, advertisements are plentiful from plenty of mainstream retailers and designers - Macy's, Hugo Boss, Ermendgildo Zegna (albeit is was a four-page spread for their Zegna Colonia cologne), Calvin Klein, Aldo, and Nautica to name a few.

Given that Men's Health isn't known as a fashion magazine as much as it is a lifestyle magazine, the offerings are in line with what would be expected - but does that mean it's worth picking up as you shop for your fall fashion? As of now, the verdict is no. Given that GQ, Details, Esquire, and numerous others are still to arrive on newsstands and in mailboxes, fashionable fellows should take a wait and see approach with what those have to offer.

This may or may not be a problem for our group but thought that a heads up would be a good idea.  Below is the message from the Yahoo Community Manager.

This week (July 14, 15, and 16), we'll be performing maintenance on the remaining 75% of Yahoo! Groups that were not affected by last Wednesday's outage.

This maintenance will take place over a three-day period (July 14, 15, and 16), as we'll be working on 25% of Yahoo! Groups at a time. This means you may be able to access some of your groups, but not all, during the outages. For the affected groups, mail will be delayed, but will return to normal once the outage is complete.

All of the outages will take place at 3pm PT (10pm UTC/GMT-to determine what time the outage will take place in your neighborhood, please visit this link: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html) on the 14th, 15th, and 16th.

While we know that outages sometimes seem to come at exactly the wrong time, we again hope to have these next three done within 2 hours.

Once the maintenance has been completed, we'll update the blog (http://www.ygroupsblog.com).

Thanks for your patience!

NorthernStar.com.au article by Mel Mcmillan | 8th July 2009

DEVOUT motor-head and Hollywood star Eric Bana may be one of the faces in the crowd at the Repco Rally to be held in the Kyogle and Tweed shires in September.

The Australian-born actor, who shot to international celebrity through his roles in Black Hawk Down and Troy , has been invited to attend the rally.

Mr Bana, well-known for his love of car rallies, recently directed a documentary film, Love the Beast, about his 25-year relationship with a Ford Falcon GT Coupe. The film will feature in the Kyogle motor sports film festival, which will be held as part of the town's rally fringe festival.

Festival organiser Suzie Colston said talks had been held with Mr Bana's management about attending the rally, but they were not yet able to confirm he would be coming. "It would be great for the festival if he came," she said.

Ms Colston said the festival would provide local charities and businesses with the opportunity to capitalise on the rally when an expected crowd of 10,000 inundated the region.

The figures were based on Western Australia's experience, where the rally was held for 20 years, Ms Colston said.

Eric Bana's management was unavailable for comment.

MEET THE CREW

The latest issue of Star Trek Magazine starts our exclusive account of the making of Star Trek, with the first batch of interviews from the key personnel involved in the creation of the film, including writers, director of photography and the costume designer.

FEATURES:

NERO AND AYEL

We interview the villains of the new movie in the latest issue, as Eric Bana explains why he became involved: "The script was incredibly smart, well written and well structured. I thought the writers had done an unbelievable job of paying enough service to many characters so succinctly but thoroughly."

Meanwhile, his lieutenant, Clifton Collins Jr remembers the disorienting feeling when he came to shoot his first scene on the Bridge of the Narada. "My heart started racing and I thought, 'This looks like that Star Trek thing... Wait a minute, this is Star Trek!"

ROBERTO ORCI & ALEX KURTZMAN

The writers and producers of Star Trek talk honestly and openly about the genesis of the movie, and some of the paths they decided not to take. Learn what role Nurse Chapel might have played, and why the description of Nero as a trucker works so well for them. Plus, an explanation as to what forces guide Kirk to meet Spock Prime, the thinking behind the Spock/Uhura romance, the original name for the U.S.S. Kelvin, and why Bones was so worried about going into space when traveling from Iowa to California.

COSTUME DESIGNER MICHAEL KAPLAN

Lavishly illustrated with exclusive costume designs from the film, the award winning designer explains the roots of the various different outfits seen in Star Trek from the 23rd Century casual wear sported by Jim Kirk to the faux fur that adorned Nero's costume. Learn which famous designers from the 1960s inspired the Vulcan Academy outfits and just how far away the Romulan costumes were made from the Paramount lot!

The Time Traveler's Wife is based on the best-selling book about a love that transcends time. Clare (Rachel McAdams) has been in love with Henry (Eric Bana) her entire life. She believes they are destined to be together, even though she never knows when they will be separated. Henry is a time traveler--cursed with a rare genetic anomaly that causes him to live his life on a shifting timeline, skipping back and forth through his lifespan with no control. Despite the fact that Henry's travels force them apart with no warning, Clare desperately tries to build a life with her one true love.

ERIC BANA MAKES CAPTAIN KIRK HIS BITCH

The Australian actor played a conflicted beast in Hulk and a troubled assassin in Munich. Now the antihero from Down Under channels pure evil as Star Trek's new villain.

Article by Sanjiv Bhattacharya; Photographs by Steven Klein

Source: http://men.style.com/details/features/landing?id=content_8697

AT THE AGREED-UPON HOUR of 2 P.M. a Nissan Pathfinder pulls up outside a sidewalk café in downtown Melbourne and Eric Bana gets out, all long and brawny, wearing jeans and a navy T-shirt. "G'day, mate, how you going? Fancy some lunch?" He's pally in that Aussie-bloke way: big handshake, singsong brogue—he even says things like "fair dinkum."

The plan is that he's going to show me around his hometown. We set off for our first destination, an Italian restaurant. As soon as we pull out into traffic, Bana enthusiastically starts playing the role of tour guide. He's selling the place like a Realtor. "Stop me if I bore you shitless," he says while changing lanes.

Sure, he could have moved to some mansion in Beverly Hills, but he prefers being out of the loop. "When it comes to projects, I'm kind of like a wine taster—all the labels are taken off," he says. "Melbourne is just the right amount of distance that I can make decisions that are not influenced by fear or hype or FOMO—fear of missing out."

But the best thing about Melbourne is that it's far enough away that sometimes he actually forgets that he is, in fact, Eric Bana, Movie Star. So the leading man from Troy, Black Hawk Down, Munich, Hulk, The Other Boleyn Girl, and now Star Trek can kid himself, in brief, blissful moments, that he's just this regular Joe with a wife and two kids and a big black poodle named Mario. But these moments are fleeting, even in his favorite Italian restaurant.

"Ereek!" The owner, Gino, fusses over Bana, lapsing into Italian as he leads us through the little family-run establishment. Some of the other diners turn to stare. He might like to think of himself as just another Melbournian, but here he's Eric Bana.

SOMETHING HAPPENED TO BANA when Hollywood called. He was a successful Australian comedian who'd spent five years doing stand-up before landing his own TV show, Eric. Then, in 2000, his searing performance as the blaring psycho Mark Read in Chopper demonstrated a raw talent at full tilt—and offered him a ticket to the movie major leagues. But no sooner had he burst through Hollywood's gilded doors than he steadied himself and began a run of characters who were defined by their inability to emote: the hawkeyed hard case Hoot in Black Hawk Down; Avner the conscience-stricken assassin in Munich; the conflicted scientist in Ang Lee's Hulk; Hector in Troy, the warrior trying to avoid war. In these roles Bana glowered, his eyes dark, wrestling with some inner dilemma.

The old Bana does reveal himself occasionally: At Aussie Rules football games, for example, Bana screams himself hoarse. In his comedy-club days, he had to stop going to contests on the night before a gig, because he wouldn't have a voice the next day. But now, for the most part, he's thoughtful, earnest, and a little serious. And he's sincere about wanting to show me around Melbourne. On finding out how far I've come, how limited my time is, and that this is my first visit to Australia, he chews pensively, calculating an itinerary.

It's hard not to fall in love with Melbourne. The city is a gleaming, sun-kissed hive of smiling, bronzed people, a world in which all the girls are blond and jogging or Rollerblading along a riverbank as rowboats glide past.

We leave Gino's and cruise the length of Chapel Street, "which is kind of like Melrose in L.A.," according to Bana, then skirt the ritzy shopping district. Windows down, radio off—only the sound of two men chewing Dentyne accompanies Bana's commentary.

We stop at a park and watch some ducks being fed. It seems a little sedate for Hector of Troy. But the ducks aren't the draw for Bana. "It's a Formula One track. There's a race in three weeks' time."

He never planned on being Eric Bana the actor, or the comedian, for that matter. What he really wants is to be Mario Andretti. Between shooting movies, Bana can be found "fart-arsing around with my car, getting ready for a race." Although he has more than one, his favorite car is a fire-engine-red '74 XB Falcon coupe that he calls the Beast. He's had it since he was 15.

"Three of my closest friends—our relationship has been maintained because we've always worked on this car," he says. "The car has transcended itself. It has become a campfire."

But one day, during the Targa Tasmania rally in April 2007, he crashed into a tree. "I totaled it. After a two-year restoration, everything handmade. Oh, it hurt—yeah. Absolutely."

He falls silent for a moment, still mourning the Beast. We exit the F1 track and stop at a light. The Temptations' "My Girl" drifts from the car next to us. "It's a bashed-up thing in the corner of the workshop," he says. "It's sitting there, not being used, but it's still my emotional bedrock, my anchor." The Beast represents Bana's memories, good and bad, and he wants to preserve them, just as his father did before him. A Croatian named Banadinovich who worked for Caterpillar, he came to Australia at the age of 16 and kept a Thunderbird—also fire-engine-red—for 35 years. Bana's urge to preserve the past goes beyond the Beast. He prefers local stores to malls, for instance. "You want a piece of meat, you go to the butcher. You want a coffee, you go to the café which is not a chain," he says.

We drive and drive: past the fancy houses to the rough areas, past the railway station where Bana used to wait on the steps for his first girlfriend, and past his old school, where he says he once showed up drunk—prompting his mom to ground him for six months. "Yeah, I went through a little phase there. But I did a lot better than some of the guys I hung with, who have ended up dead or in jail," he says. Bana wasn't a star student: He had to repeat a year of high school. "It wasn't like I was busting to get into NASA or anything," he says.

Then he drives to a small, nondescript brick building and we park outside the house he lived in when he first attempted to make people laugh for a living. He made the decision to give comedy a try after driving around the United States in a 1979 Mustang on his own for six months. He was all of 22. "It sounded like a great idea at the time, but after 10 days straight without talking to anybody, you start to think, What the fuck am I doing here?" he says. Still, he plowed on, from city to city, sleeping in his car because money was tight. And then he got lost in the wrong part of Washington, D.C. "I'd be pulling up to street corners, and there were gangs right there, and I'm in this little Mustang by myself. I thought, I am fucking dead. I was running red lights, hoping the cops would pull me over."

The experience prepared him for stand-up—the loneliness and fear had hardened him. So when he was working as a bartender in a comedy club back home a few months later, he says he thought, "These acts are all a bit shithouse—I can do that. I'll be a bit uncomfortable up there, but after the trip I had, how bad can it be?"

It was the right choice. He has a talent for impersonating people. On YouTube you'll find Bana doing Arnold (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqQFYQchQAU ), Bana doing Tom Cruise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySDkIwWHk74 ). He went about as far as you can in Australia—from $60-a-night gigs to his own TV show. And then, after 10 years, he quit.

"I got sick of listening to myself," he says. "I had all the tools, but my act had stagnated and I felt dirty."

Comedy is not something Bana wishes to revisit. The closest he's come to that is a part in the upcoming Judd Apatow movie Funny People, starring Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler.

"All I miss about comedy is being producer, director, and writer. I miss the control," he says.

Like many comics, Bana is prone to dark moods. He says his wife, Rebecca, a former publicist, is great at "talking me off the ledge." They married in 1997 when he was working the comedy circuit. Their kids, Klaus and Sophie, are 9 and 7. "I do get incredibly frustrated. I tend to dwell on the negative," he says, staring into the middle distance, his eyes filled with conflict. He takes a long breath and then exhales. "That's our central post office there on the right."

In a few weeks he'll be racing again. Then there's a heap of press to do for all the movies he's got in the can—Star Trek, Funny People, the chick-flicky Time Traveler's Wife. Beyond that, he's just reading and deciding what comes next. The in-between is his favorite time, living his Melbourne life, sticking the bikes on the roof of the car and taking the kids to the beach.

Today he's happy just to be a tour guide. "If you've got time tomorrow, you should check out the Melbourne Cricket Ground—it's one of the great sporting stadiums. I think they do tours," he says before we part.

He shakes my hand and heads into the balmy night in the city where he can fool himself into thinking that he's still plain old Aussie Eric, the family man and race-car nut who remembers who he is just enough to forget what he does.

Eric Bana continues his press tour, making an appearance at the UK Film Premiere
of Star Trek at the Empire Leicester Square on Monday (April 20) in London,
England.

At the premiere, the 40-year-old star talked a little bit about his character
Nero. "It's a huge thrill to be able to turn up in a movie as a villain that
hasn't been seen before. I guess it's a sense of freedom at not being the moral
center of the film, not having to worry about how the character looks - that was
quite liberating. It was a lot of fun," Eric told Empire.

British actor Simon Pegg said, "For me, tonight is very special. It's the Empire
Leicester Square. I saw films here as a child… it's a geek dream come true."
