Hi Larry, I was wondering if you would know if the production crew
produced a 20K Leagues Soundtrack availble for personal use, since I
found the entire soundtrack of the film very entertaining and
beautiful (esp. the scene were Nemo is playing the beautiful piece on
his pipe organ, very hauntingly performed) not to mention, I enjoy a
passion for Classical music, would you know who the composer is for
Nemo's Pipe Organ piece? I have researched all over the net for the
symphonic music from Leagues either to download and burn to a cd-r or
to purchase on those vintage movie collectors sites and I have found
no luck anywere.

Thanks Larry

Hi folks - this is the first "semi-official" notice of a 20K
Conference to be held in Anaheim, California in July of 2003. Work
has just started on this project, so, there are no current details
to release except for the weekend of July 12th & 13th will be the
dates of this happening.

We are hoping for a really amazing event to happen. There are a lot
of ideas on the block at current, but, more are needed to help us
really get a scope feel to develop. If there is anything you would
like to see on this program - at least - for the developing board to
research and see if developing such a line of programming is
feasible - please drop us an email at: chandlerscove@...

There will be a webpage up sometime in December. I will make sure
that everyone will be informed here.

Thanks for your time and interest in this - and, thanks for your
ideas you might be submitting.

All the best - K.D.

Subject: What ever became of the Artic Scene in 20,000 Leagues?

Hi Kristie,

Re your question, What happened to the missing Artic Scene? (actually
the South Pole Sequence)

I believe it was director Richard Fleischer who mentioned that it was
trimmed out of the movie due to the fact that it didn't advance the
story. The shot you are referring to (showing the Nautilus on the
surface surrounded by ice bergs) was part of a short 'travel
montage'. This sequence began with the Nautilus underwater passing
the underside of huge icebergs, and continued as it surfaced amid
walls of giant glaciers. Sad to say, the film of this short sequence
has never been found. When we were working on the DVD, I was
especially hoping it might be located, but we never found anything,
not even behind-the scenes footage. All that's left are a few
beautiful color photos.

One time when I met Harper Goff, Leagues' art director, he told me
and several others that there was a print of a longer version of
Leagues still in existance, which ran approximately 2 hours and 49
minutes. (It may have been the Work Print). He said a few of these
had been made. I have been searching for this longer version for
years without success . Hopefully, I or someone else will someday
uncover the film and it will eventually be distributed as the Special
Edition of 20,000 Leagues. But until that time comes, we'll just
have to rely on these photos to see all the different scenes that
were photographed but never incorporated into the final edit of the
film.

Hello everyone, I have a question and I hope that you guys can help
me out about the "Artic Scene" that was deleted out of the film. I
noticed this when I came across another interesting 20k fan site,
called Cinematastique Images, and it shocked me to why the production
team removed that scene, were the Nautilus is supposed to travel to
the North Pole, as from the Verne novel. I wish that the production
team would have not edit that scene out of the film, it would have
been really interesting to see the Nautilus travel up to the North
Pole as Nemo is exploring the world's oceans! :)

Thanks guys

FYI

I was watching the new DVD of John Carpenter's The Fog. While listening to
the director's comments he indicated that the spiral staircase used in
their sound stage replication of the Pt Reyes Lighthouse interior came from
the Nautilus set.

Subject: Diagrams of the Nautilus Interior
cyberlarry7

Hi John,

That's a good question, Are there any diagrams or models of the
Nautilus interior?

First, all the original blueprints for all the Nautilus sets still
exist over at the Disney studios. They were seen & referred to in
recent times by Tom Scherman, when he art directed the construction
of the Disneyland-Paris Ride, Les Mysteres du Nautilus (The Mysteries
of the Nautilus), which is located in Discoveryland.

To my knowlege, these plans have never been publicly sold or
displayed. HOWEVER, someone did make a bootleg copy of many of these
blueprints (over 80 pages worth), and, from time to time, I've seen
this 'book' of diagrams sold on ebay. I was told that the
reproductions aren't very good, but, they are 'out there.'

As for models of the interior sets -- you, me and many others would
love to see these. But as far as I know, no one has ever made & sold
any 'garage kit' / resin reproductions of the Nautilus sets. The
closest I've seen is in a few models of the Nautilus (like Icons),
which contained the forward interior section of the Wheelhouse.

Regarding models.... when 20,000 LEAGUES was in pre-production, every
Nautilus set was constructed as a highly detailed, cardboard model.
There are quite a few photos showing LEAGUES Sketch Artist Brush
Bushman examining these on his desk. As far as I know, all of these
were lost or destroyed after the film was completed. When we were
working on the LEAGUES DVD, our producer went looking for these
models in archives, and nothing was ever found.

In the middle 1970's, Tom Scherman built his own Nautilus set
models. I was there some of the time, watching him construct the
miniature interiors. He created every single set from the film in
fantastic detail, then went on to tie them all together & assemble
them in a 'Nautilus shell' - making a huge 'cutaway display model of
the Nautilus' that revealed all the Harper Goff sets. It even
contained it's own lighting. He eventually sold the stunning model
to Disney Imagineering, where it now resides on the 2nd floor of
their building. During the making the LEAGUES DVD, the camera team
photographed this model with loving attention. I believe there will
be close-ups of many of the miniature compartments on the upcoming
disc.

Larry,

Are you aware of any diagrams or models of the Nautilus
interior? It would great to see how all of the individual rooms tied
together.

Can you tell us about the "The infamous two-way door" as labeled by
Boz at the 20K web site? This is the scene where Ned is struggling
against water rushing into to his previously, locked down cabin near
the end of the movie. Apparently there are two scenes where the cabin
door swing in two conflicting directions. Did you ever hear how this
blooper came about?

Hi Theo,

Well now, you've finally come up with something that even I didn't
know about . . . a 2-way DOOR? All I can say is, I will have to go
back and re-watch the film! After my many viewings of LEAGUES, I
never picked this one up. I know the film has glitches & continuity
errors; no major film as complex as LEAGUES was is free of continuity
mistakes. You ought to try watching the GODFATHER films for mistakes
(loaded with them) Or try Stanley (Perfectionist) Kubrick's films.
Take for example EYES WIDE SHUT. It has over 30 continuity errors -
some of them really major. I recall seeing LEAGUES with Tom Scherman
once and he was pointing them out . . . (in the scene were Kirk gets
drunk in his cabin, singing with the seal), Tom said, "Look over
there! (he pointed to a lower part of the cabin where it meets the
floor) See? There's a spot where a rivet on the wall fell off and
you can see the unpainted wood of the set backing!" Tom could be
hilariously manic about things like that.

One cutting error in LEAGUES is the sequence when Ned & Conseil,
dressed in their diving suits, drop down through the large circular
escape hatch on the Diving Chamber's floor. The first diver to leave
the Chamber is a Nautilus crewman, followed by the other two
actor/divers. If you pay attention, you'll notice that the first
diver is wearing what was referred to as the Crewman's Helmet (this
was the type that had the rubber tubing above the face plate). The
scene then cuts to this diver exiting out of the the bottom of the
Nautilus . . . only NOW the film shows a diver wearing a completely
different helmet - what was called The Bald Helmet (this different
helmet had no rubber tubing, just a small metallic funnel on each
side of the face plate). Just one of those little editing
errors . . . Harper Goff had designed 3 different diving helmets:
the Nemo, the Crewman and the Bald Helmet. He wanted to show
the 'evolution' of helmet design, with Nemo's being the most
advanced.

In several shots of the Nautilus salon there appears to be two
circular portholes to the left of the organ. Yet the exterior
doesn't show this. What are these round glass areas?

John
---------------------------------------------------------------

Hi John,

These circular 'portholes' were actually circular aquariums beside
the organ. Right after the scene where Nemo and the crew repair the
broken shaft in the Engine Room, Nemo enters the Salon and talks to
Professor Arronax and Conseil. If you look at these 'aquariums' in
this sequence - you'll notice that the water level (at the top of
each aquarium) is 'tilted' (as if an aquarium was lifted up on one
side). That's because Art Director Harper Goff had the entire Salon
set literally 'propped up' to tilt to one end - thereby insuring that
the water level in the aquariums would show this...

One other thing you may have noticed -- if you look at the huge
overhead ceiling pipe above the actors - there's a small, steady
stream of water dripping from it. The realistic, dripping drops of
water were animated, most likely by Josh Meador. This artist was the
brilliant head of Disney's Animation Effects Department, and also did
the bolts of electricity that ran along the hull of the Nautilus
during the underwater attack of the giant squid. Two years later, in
1956, Meador would bring to life one of the most memorable creations
in cinema, FORBIDDEN PLANET's classic Monster From the Id.

Hope this answers your question,

Were any of the Vulcania Matte Paintings originally created to show
Rorapandi?
------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Nestria,

To answer your question, No, the 3 matte paintings that I referred to
in my previous email (the 3 Vulcania matte paintings plus the 'atomic
power plant' glass-shot) were all distinctly made for the Vulcania
sequence - not Rorapandi. (By the way, that's the way the island's
name is spelled in the script)

HOWEVER --- there is an earlier shot - a very very wide long shot
that shows the Nautilus surfacing on the water, and 'way in the
distance, you can see an island. This scene directly follows the
shot of a very drunk Kirk Douglas 'rolling himself into his bed &
saying good-night to the seal. I remember talking with Tom Scherman
about this particular scene... he told me he felt strongly that it
was originally executed as an 'establishing shot' of the Nautilus
approaching Rorapandi. Why? Because if you look very closely at the
island in the distance, you'll see that it has no volcanic cone.
Tom thought that during the editing of the film, someone (director
Richard Fleischer or film editor Elmo Williams) decided that this
footage was needed to 'start off' the Vulcania sequence, while it
wasn't really necessary to 'establish' the beginning of the Rorapandi
sequence. So it was shifted from one area to another place in the
film. I think Tom's observation about the island without a volcanic
cone/crater is extremely persuasive. Personally, I think Tom was
right.

Nestria - if this is the 'Vulcania shot' you were referring to,
you've got very sharp eyes indeed.

Hi Tom,

To answer your question as to What Became of the Vulcania Matte
Paintings? As far as I know, there were 3 Vulcania Matte Paintings
and 1 glass shot painting: The island as seen from at sea; the shot
looking down into the crater; a painting of the 'side wall' of the
inner crater (used for rear projection footage - in the scene where
Nemo looks out of the giant glass 'eye' window of the Wheelhouse &
sees the crater wall -- as the submarine is surfacing within the
crater); and the 'glass shot' painting of the atomic power station
that surrounds the wharf at Vulcania.

I know that Mr. Ellenshaw has the picture of the island as seen from
at sea (this was for the scene where you see the Nautilus submerging
in front of the island). The crater painting & side-wall painting -
as far as I know, are (hopefully) at Disney archives. These 2 were
originally at the 20,000 LEAGUES EXHIBIT in Disneyland/Anaheim, and
suposedly were returned to the studio after the exhibit's
destruction.

As for that spectacular painting of the atomic power station, I
interviewed Mr. Ellenshaw several years ago and he told me it was a
glass painting - and, most unfortunately, the glass panel it was
painted on had probably been 'scrapped free' so the studio could use
the panel for another matte in the near future. So that one appears
lost forever. I've searched for many years for a photograph of that
glass painting. I'm sure it MUST exist, as I've seen studio-record
photos of the 'looking down the crater' painting plus others, from
LEAGUES. But I've yet to come across that particular glass painting.

One other thing - the 'join' of the Vulcania crater power station
(surrounding the wharf) is fairly visible in the film - this was not
due to poor special effects workmanship.

Rather, when the unit crew went out to shoot this scene - they only
printed one shot, and also one additional short piece of test footage
to 'play with' in the lab to get the exposure just right when
compositing the matte painting.

HOWEVER, someone among the camera crew mislabled the 2 cans of
footage - so when Ellenshaw & his team went to work on the test
footage, they discovered to their horror that they had begun to use
the only printed footage for the 'long-shot' of the interior crater.
They were stuck - they had already 'used' part of this footage and,
as Ellenshaw tells it, they had to continue now -- they had to make
an educated guess as to how much F-stop to expose the matte painting
onto this footage. They made their guess and the shot is up there in
film. It's not as perfect as it could have been, but it's not a bad
shot either. After all these years, it's interesting to know that
this shot could ultimately be corrected to look perfect - quite
easily on the computer, almost 50 years after it had been made.

Hope this answers your question,

- Larry

We all know Peter Ellenshaw did the superb matte painting of the

It must be about the most desirable piece of movie memorabilia for
the film known to exist outside of the actual 11-foot film model!!

Hi Everyone,

I'm writing to you all to let you know there are quite a few new
additions to the 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA site. If you
click on Photos and go to the Photo Album area, you may be
surprised to find that there are now 14 (yes, I said Fourteen)
Photo Albums loaded with fabulous stills, pictures, and almost
everything related to the classic Disney film. And for those of
you who have been asking for SET STILLS, you'll find a whole new
album devoted to Art Director Harper Goff's genius - with 15
shots of his amazing creations.

In alphabetical order, here are the titles of the Photo Albums:

BEHIND THE SCENES PHOTOS - 18 fascinating photos
BOOTLEGS, UNAUTHORIZED & CRAZY THINGS RELATED TO FILM - 26
images of bootleg CDs, books with Leagues' artwork
(unauthorized), rip-offs of the Disney-designs in animated
cartoon versions, etc.
DIORAMAS & MODELS - 21 photos of really fine models built by
fans
THE DISNEYWORLD RIDE - 13 photos of the DisneyWorld Ride
LASER DISCS & VIDEOTAPES - 19 photos of cover artwork from
around the world
LOBBY CARDS - 28 pictures of Lobby Cards from America and
Europe
MAGAZINES & BOOKS & COMICS - 42 images of international books,
magazines & comics based on the film
POSTERS - 43 fantastic pictures - see the largest assembly of
Leagues' poster artwork on the Entire Internet
PRESSBOOKS - 14 images of American & Foreign Pressbooks &
presskits, including close-ups of some of the newspaper
advertising art
PROGRAMS - 10 photos from programs from around the world
RECORDS & AUDIO-BOOKS - 18 images of records from America &
Europe
SCENES FROM FILM - 18 photographs of scenes from the movie
SET STILLS - 15 great set photos, including a few
'construction shots'
TOYS GAMES PUZZLES - 55 images - my favorite album - loaded
with images of toys, periscopes, jigsaw puzzles, etc. from
around the world. Leagues had an enormous merchandising
campaign.

I know that there's a lot of pictures here -- so I would suggest
that possibly the best (and easiest) way of seeing all the
photos in each Album is to either: CLICK on the Blue-Text of
'SHOW ALL' - at the Top Left of the pages (this will reveal
every picture in the album at one time & you can 'scroll down'
at your leisure, clicking on the ones that interest you to
enlarge them); The other best way to view an entire album (with
all the pictures 'coming up' in the largest size) is to click on
the Blue-Text of 'SLIDESHOW' at the Top Right hand side.

I hope you enjoy all the albums; I've had a great time putting
the pictures all together - collecting images over the years,
from here and overseas - to bring everything into one site so
any fan of the film could find something to interest him or her.
Please let me know what you think, and any suggestions you
might have for future inclusions.

Enjoy!

Underwater Accommodations Sleep beneath the ocean at Jules' Undersea Lodge

by Elizabeth Arneson

Sleeping underwater sounds like a dream. But modern architects have made this
dream a reality, with several "underwater hotels" currently in the planning
stages and at least one currently accepting guests.

Jules' Undersea Lodge, named after Jules Verne (author of 20,000 Leagues
Under the Sea), is located off the shore of Key Largo, Florida. The lodge was
originally built as a research laboratory to explore the continental shelf.
The world's first underwater hotel, Jules' Undersea Lodge is also the first
underwater research lab to be made available to average people.

Getting There

To get to Jules' Undersea Lodge, visitors must dive 21 feet below the surface
of the sea and enter through the floor in the inn's wet room. "Entering
through an opening in the bottom of the habitat, the feeling is much like
discovering a secret underwater clubhouse," according to the lodge's Web site.

If you're not a certified scuba diver, Jules' offers a package of different
diving classes. You can learn just enough to get you safely into the inn, or
you can go all out and get an open water certification, or even an advanced
certification.

Accommodations

The 600-square-foot building includes air conditioning, hot showers, a
well-stocked kitchen, books, music and videos. The 42-inch round windows in
the bedrooms and the common room provide a good view of the surrounding sea
life.

Each of the two 8-by-10 bedrooms is equipped with a telephone, intercom,
television, VCR, stereo sound system, small refrigerator and sink, as well as
a double bed.

The multipurpose common room is 8 by 20, with a microwave, refrigerator,
sink, dining area, telephone, intercom, television, VCR and stereo sound
system. The sofa converts into two single beds for larger groups.

Ordinarily, the lodge hosts two couples. A single group of up to six can fit,
using the two double beds and the converted sofa in the common room.

Guests have a limitless air supply from 100-foot-long "hookah" lines. The air
pressure keeps the water from rising and flooding the rooms. An enclosed
shower and toilet are located off the wet room.

Marine Life

The lodge's presence underwater actually enhances marine life, providing an
artificial reef to give animals shelter. Among the marine creatures guests
are likely to see during a stay at Jules' Undersea Lodge are angelfish,
parrotfish, barracuda and snappers. The inn is covered by anemones, sponges,
oysters and feather duster worms.

Bed and Breakfast

Because of its small size, Jules' Undersea Lodge very much resembles a bed
and breakfast. Although breakfast is not served by an innkeeper, the common
room includes a stocked refrigerator and a microwave oven. The staff is on
duty 24 hours a day to provide any necessary services. One available package
includes a "mer-chef" who dives down to the hotel and prepares a gourmet
dinner. A local shop provides underwater pizza delivery.

Larry,

Do you have any photos for the Disneyland 20k exhibit back in the 50s
and 60s? I would love to see what was displayed.

Thanks for the invite! I'm sure I'm going to love this group!

I worked on the DVD too. You can see the CFI Nautilus I built for the
special features section by following this path:

http://www.artimation.com/

click SAMPLES in the lower right corner

On the SAMPLES page, under ALA CARTE, the third clip in from the left on the
top row is THE NAUTILUS. It's a Quicktime movie, 1.2mb download.

Enjoy!

Hello Larry,

Thanks for the invite to your site. I have been a closet Nautilus
fan since the beginning of time. I am now OUT of the closet so
to speak, and am trying to play catch up to all of the collectibles
as they become available.

Thanks again,
Tres

Hello Everyone -

Larry Brooks, here. I want to tell you all that I've done a lot of
work to get this new 20,000 LEAGUES site Up & Running... sorry it's a
bit late. I now invite you to come see the many new Albums I've set
up under the 'PHOTOS' section. Come take a look - the 11 new albums
are overflowing with photographs of 20,000 LEAGUES memoribilia,
stills from the movie (with some never before seen behind-the-scenes
shots from the first giant squidfight that director Richard Fleischer
staged - the infamous Sunset Squid), LEAGUES toys, posters, dioramas -

Here's a list of the album titles:

BOOTLEGS RIP-OFFS & UNAUTHORIZED LEAGUES ITEMS . . .
DIORAMAS & MODELS
THE DISNEYWORLD RIDE NAUTILUS
LASER DISCS & VIDEOTAPES
LOBBY CARDS
POSTERS (from around the world)
PRESSBOOKS (American and overseas versions)
PROGRAMS BOOKS MAGAZINES (American & European)
RECORDS & AUDIOTAPES (American & European)
SCENES FROM FILM (this section will continue to grow regularly)
TOYS GAMES PUZZLES (American & European)

In the next week or two, I will post the various shops & stores (from
the U.S., Europe & Japan) where you can buy different versions of the
Nautilus.

Please let me know what you think of this site - I welcome your
feedback and any questions you may have about the film. AND -
because I know everyone is wondering about it - the LEAGUES DVD is
tentatively set to come out in Spring of 2003.

- Larry

What's with all the Ebay auctions for sailor's caps worn by the crew
in the movie. I see them up for auction all the time but never any
other props from the movie. Does anyone have any other nice "prop" in
their collection?
