Themes involving the ethnic strife of Srilankan Tamils are not new to Kollywood. Mani Ratnam in Kanathil Muthamittal had handled this with an expert dexterity. Now in Rameswaram, produced by S N Raja for ITA films, director Selvam has also attempted to bring out a similar flavor.
Rameswaram, a scenic island in Tamil Nadu, with limitless nature’s bounty is located thirty-six miles from Jaffna, which is troubled by the ethnic conflict and identified by the sounds of war. There is only one escape route to circumvent this struggle –Rameswaram – where thousands of Tamil refugees land every day hoping for a better tomorrow.
Manivannan is the affluent landlord in Jaffna, owner of plenty of fertile lands and also a much respected man in the town. Fourteen members of his family get killed in an attack which follows his exit from his native town along with the only living
member of his family- Jeeva to land in Rameswaram. Though Jeeva and his friends leave Jaffna in a bid to
safeguard their lives, they are not too happy in Rameswaram and are eager to leave for their motherland. Lal is a humane wealthy man in Rameswaram who helps the expatriates from Srilanka and his daughter Bhavana falls in love with Jeeva. Villainy comes in the form of bad cop and Bhavana’s cousin, Inspector Bose, who wreaks havoc in the lives of the pair with his vicious conspiracies. Will Jeeva’s attempt to reclaim his love and to venture into his homeland again prove fruitful? Rameswaram has the answer, nothing that’s too unpredictable.
Jeeva’s
dialogues pregnant with emotions are sharp and thought provoking. When Bhavana calls him a refugee, he retorts angrily saying that migrated Tamils is a better epithet. Though he does his role well, the native Tamil that he speaks fails him miserably. In fact, none of the cast speaks Tamil the way Srilankan Tamil should be spoken. This certainly is a major let down and is a huge block from getting involved with the film. When the nucleus of the subject is about the refugees, adequate care should have been taken by the director to fill up these gaps. The sequence
where Bhavana falls in love with Jeeva is much clichéd; besides, she seems blissfully distracted with herself. This has put brakes in the tempo of the film. Lal as Bhavana’s dad does a neat job. Sampath, one of the refugees also needs a special mention.
Director Selvam shines in the scene where Jeeva gets beaten at the police station saying that no one can break the endurance level of a Tamil, which speaks volumes about their unshakable fortitude. Few such scenes do move the viewers to tears.
Music by Srilankan Tamil Niru is laudable especially in the ‘Ellaraiyum Ethipoga Poga’ number, which is certain to take all the refugees on a nostalgic trail. Cinematography by R B Gurudev and Vetri is satisfactory. Suresh Urs’s editing deserves a mention.
The efforts of the director in trying to convey the trials and tribulations of Tamils can be lauded. That apart, it is just another attempt to showcase the plight of
Srilankan Tamils, which is not strong enough. What could have been a memorable movie watching experience is reduced to a mere time pass, courtesy the run of the mill plot, only with a different backdrop.
Verdict - undistinguished plot camouflaged in serious arena
Rameshwaram movie starring Jeeva and Bhavana in the lead dwells on romance between a Lankan refugee and a daughter of a rich landlord in Rameshwaram. The ethnic issue in Sri Lanka forms the backdrop. With a tanned look and long hair, Jeeva fits the role of a Lankan refugee well. Bhavana plays a bubbly young girl, who runs around romancing Jeeva. Lal, Bose Venkat and Manivannan also form part of the cast.
The movie revolves aroung Jeeva, a native of Jaffna, seeking refugee on Rameshwaram coast with his grandfather Manivannan. A rich and an influential man in the village Lal provides them shelter. Jeeva wins the compassion of Bhavana, Lal’s daughterand she slowly falls in love with him. But trouble enters in the form of Bose Venkat, a tough policeman in Rameshwaram whose wedding is arranged with Bhavana. False cases are imposed against Jeeva and he is targeted for loving Bhavana. Does he manage to overcome all odds? Does he get to marry Bhavana forms the rest of the story.

MS Raju is a busy man these days. With Vaana nearing completion and with the added burden of launching his son soon, he is a man with a hand in too many pies.
But given his Midas touch, he is bound to ensure that all his films are a hit as always.
The latest from his camp is that Bhavana has been signed to do a film with Supergood Films. Though one doesn’t know which one, but it is confirmed that she will be doing a film with the banner.
Looks like the Malayalee belle has charmed the Telugu makers in a big way!

From a movie about refugees and their impending future, told from a youngster’s perspective, all you would expect would be songs that are sad and uninspiring. You would be surprised, go ahead and read our review;
A melodious
number that opens with excellent use of wind
instruments and a nice rhythm that slowly sets in with great rendition by both Haricharan and Kalyani. Song talks about the hero expressing his plight as a refugee and how he would not be the right choice for the heroine who says she can comfort him in spite of all his troubles. Some interesting lyrics by Kabilan.
Ellorayum Ethipoga - Haricharan, Manicka Vinayagam, Reshmi, Suriya Lyrics: Kabilan
This song has already captivated Tamil refugees all over the world, an excellent blend of meaningful lyrics and an ensemble of singers with varied voices. A song probably sung by refugees trying to cheer themselves up reminiscing their happy days back home. Music starts with a violin piece and then drum beats and a harmony that leads to a small child’s voice - a good build up. Kabilan's lyrics have elevated it to a different plane altogether, placing the burden on the visuals to enhance it even
further.
Naan Tharai Nila - Swetha Mohan Lyrics: Yugabharathy
About the heroine explaining her personality and her desires all in one song. Not new, concept wise, but lyrics are good. Let’s get to the music part, this one doesn’t disappoint any bit but doesn’t surprise you either, perhaps it belongs to the kind that might grow on you.
Netirunthom Engal - Arun OS Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar
The song commiserates with the lives of the refugees. Seems like a song that is picturised on refugees staring at a bleak future. Again appropriate lyrics accompanied by very subtle orchestration. Arun is a promising find, one to look for in the future, for his high pitched rendition.
Reminds you of Aaathangara Maname from Kizhakku Cheemaiyele at first but on repeated listening reveals the layers. Not in the league of the other songs but Chinmayee’s voice clearly is the highlight, post Sahana she seems to be all the more comfortable singing along different scales. Beats are not very different, supposedly an attempt by the director to please the masses and still strike a balance with some interesting instrumental bits interspersed in between foot tapping beats.
Theme Music - Niru
The haunting score explains the certain under current that can be heard in all the songs befitting theme. Interesting orchestration and arrangement of wind and string instruments, lending it a touch of class. It’s been some time since CD’s have come out with theme music in them.
Verdict:
All those searching for some soul stirring melodies, this one is for you. Niru showed a lot of promise in his
first movie Kalaba Kaadhalan and in this outing he has shown, he is the one to look out for. Keep up the good work Niru.
