Notes on Dreamfasting:
Gelfllings have the power to dreamfast. When they touch one another something
like an electric charge is exchanged between them, and simultaneously their
minds are welded into a single controlled, articulated like conversation, not
random, gushing. They exchange and share images. As the images are
transmitted, both Gelflings have the knowledge that each is receiving the
other's image exactly as though the exchange is taking place at the level of
speech, where one would describe and see the other listen, respond, and
acknowledge. And yet not a word is spoken between them. Only their clasped
hands communicate. "Dreamfasting through the touch of hands" does not
necessarily apply to living hands only.
It seems to me that what Jen and Kira experienced was sudden and unexpected.
Jen had never done it before and Kira probably hadn't done it since childhood.
Thus their experience was a bit random. Dreamfasting is controlled and not
random, like a speechless conversation, not just a slide show of past event.
Just remember that the voice overs in the dreamfasting scene are for the benefit
of the audience. Jen and Kira don't actually hear the words that describe their
past experiences.
As for gelfling crime rates, I don't think we know much about past gelfling
societies or the laws that governed them.

Doesn't the idea of someone having the ability to see into your
memories sound kinda creepy.. I mean what kind of stuff can they see?
I mean it seems to me that if they could see your whole life they
could see some very personal and private moments. I know dreamfasting
sounds cool when you first see it in the film but would you really be
comfortable living in a society where everyone had the ability to see
your all of your lifes memories.
Like if you were in Jen's shoes (I know he doesn't wear shoes) and
you just met some chick for the first time would you really want her
seeing the time you had really bad food poisoning and were on the
crapper for four and half hours?
Could you keep that kind of stuff from being shown or would you just
have to cross your fingers and hope that it doesn't show up in the
montage?.. I don't care how much it would help ones relationships and
how much it would further your society I think somethings are better
kept private. I mean atleast until you start to get to know the
person then they can find out about how you enjoy the feeling of
billiard balls in your rectum.
Also too it could explain the low crime rate in Gelfling society I
mean you think you can't get away with anything in our society with
all this forensic science and DNA evidence. I mean you kill someone
you'd I guess have to resort to giving up bathing and start covering
yourself in feces just so no one would want to go near you let alone
touch your hand.
