From: Ghosts Of Pompeii

Last month at The Secret Cinema we gave a well deserved shout-out to
character actor Ron Pearlman. Although this journeyman actor may never find
himself on the guest list of posh Hollywood parties, he has amassed a
sizable fanbase as well as the respect of established directors like
Guillermo del Toro.
Brad Dourif is of a similar ilk; a wild-eyed character actor with a wicked
glare, the greasy unwashed hair of a Carny Grifter, and the word `trouble'
etched across his brow. Although not physically imposing he has the
dangerous disposition of an unchecked serial killer stalking in the shadows;
spring-loaded and ready to lash out at friend or foe without the slightest
provocation.
Like fellow "Cuckoo's Nest" resident Jack Nicholson, Dourif has the piercing
expressive eyes of a bona fide nut case. Yet for all his acting chops and
twitchy mannerisms Dourif's is probably more renowned as the voice of the
psychotic "Child's Play" killer doll Chucky than any other on-screen persona

So after 30 years of performing in horror, fantasy, and sci-fi movies it's
about time we give a tip of the hat to Brad Dourif as this week's Secret
Cinema theme features the "The Genre Films Of Brad Dourif".

Well, once again, I'm happy there's a list, because I am not very swift when it
comes to individual actors or directors, but as soon as you mentioned Chucky, I
sort of lit up. I am in the middle of my Christmas cleaning, so things are
going to be very improvised this Saturday in deed. I might even have to watch a
Netflix rendition on my computer instead of my regular system, as everything is
going to be torn apaar for dusting, but here are my 5 picks.

1. "Vlad." A great docudrama about the real guy that "Dracula" is based on.
And I PROMISE any of you who have not seen this flick, the realities of Vlad
Tepec are even more horifying then the mythology that grew up aroundhim.

2. "Childs Play." This creepy little possessed doll will make your skin crawl,
and since it's been so long since I've seen it, it might be a nice break from my
house cleaning.

3. "The Ghost." I never saw this flick, but as you all know, I am a sucker for
anything even remotely resembling a traditional ghost story or haunted house
story. I may be wrong, but this film sounds like it would be a fun screening.

4. "The Hazing." There's a film that has a very relavent message about
practical jokes, in addition to being a great horror flick.

5. "Urban Legend." This is one of my favorite "pop corn' movies. I say that,
because whileit's not a real classic in every sense of the word, it does present
a very entertaining horror story about a serial killer who's obsessed with urban
legends, and brings them to life.

Now as I said, my Christmas cleaning is going to have to take precedence, so
there is not going to be a pre flick cartoon this weekend, nor will there be a
2nd feature. I will be screening this weeks winner, most likely on my computer,
but I do plan to have it up on the screen at 10:30 pm.

The following Saturday, (Nov 21m) my pre flick cartoon is going to be either my
final screening of "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving," or I will screen "The
Mayflower Voyage," which is a cute story about the Peanuts gang on the May
Flower, being that it will be the Thanksgiving weekend. Or if I'm feeling
Chrismassy, I'll screan "A Charlie Brown Christmas" for the first time, though I
prefer to wait until Christmas to screen the Christmas specials. I will
announce the pre flick cartoon next week.

Mike

Joe, that is ABSOLUTELY not what I did. I did start a whole new thread titled

If the subject line got messed up some how, I apologise, but I assure you, I did

Well, I can't help but to disagree. I could not find any major simularities
between "2012" and "When Worlds Collide," except that both of them deal with the
end of the world as we know it.

I hope Speilberg changes his mind about the remake of "When Worlds Collide,"
however.

1.) Exorcist III – (Excellent supernatural thriller with a top notch cast and a
wicked performance from Brad Dourif as the serial killer dubbed, The Gemini
Killer. Don't be put off by this film because of the pathetic second film in the
series "Exorcist II: The Heretic" – because "Exorcist III" is a brilliant stand
alone picture that takes place right where the first film left off. This
troubled verion had stumbled along for quite some time as studio executives
undermined the project at every step of the way, attempting to strong arm Blatty
into dumbing down his unique vision in order to include another Exorcist
sequence like the one in the first film. Thankfully the sequence doesn't deter
from the finished product and adds the additional pizzazz required of a big
Hollywood finish.)

2.) The Bride Of Chucky – (It was about this point in the series that I found it
to be the most entertaining.)

3.) Seed Of Chucky – (He's a chip off his old man's block and twice as crazy.
But its nice seeing this nuclear family slay together in order to stay
together.)

4.) Urban Legend – (Just got this movie a while back and can't recall a thing
about it so I figure I'll add it to my list and get surprised is it's a decent
film.)

5.) Alien Resurrection – (I know … say no more. The Movie was featured just two
or three weeks ago. But I needed a fifth pick to pad out my list, and I wouldn't
mind watching Brad Dourif taunt a pack of rabid ALIENS again.)

I haven't seen the film yet but think no one destroys the earth any better
than Roland Emmerich.
It may be implausable as to how the hero manages to escape when all others
around him or her succumb to the collapse of the world around them - but it sure
looks good on film. LOL

An excellent write-up, Joe.

1. Child's Play.
This has to be number one. Besides, it's high time the Chuckster made a Secret
Cinema appearance.

2. Bride of Chucky.
A much needed shot in the arm for the series.

3. Seed of Chucky
A good follow up to Bride.

4. Halloween (2007)
I STILL like it. Don't hate me.

5. Blue Velvet
Still haven't seen this.

I have no idea what warlock means. Years ago I knew some Wiccans, they were the
ones who told me that it was a Hollywood word. So I called a woman who I am
still friends with who is a Wiccan.  In old English warlock means deceiver or
oath breaker, I also understand that in Scottish witchcraft it was used in
reference to a male witch. Modern Wiccans wont use the word warlock, and
Hollywood has misused the word warlock. So I was misinformed when I was younger.
As far visiting some museum I`m unemployed and on the verge of homelessness so
it`s not likely.

Actually, "warlock" is an old term. However, it didn't mean a male witch
originally. It meant "oath breaker" in its original concept.

I've seen "Life of Brian" and "the Meaning of Life" and enjoyed them both.
They were laugh-out-loud funny movies so I know I can expect more of the
same with "The Holy Grail".

The only reason i wrote thta it would be more popular,is because I really
thought you borrowed the quote from PYTHON.More people are familiar with
that quote from that movie,is all.Anyway,if you havent seen MONTY PYTHON AND
THE HOLY GRAIL you are in for a treat.Check out LIFE OF BRIAN and THE
MEAANING OF LIFE as well.i think MONTY PYTHON got sued by the Catholic
church for LIFE OF BRIAN?aND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.......

November 16,09 response:

Really, all it takes is someone to write a story about a spell that weakens a
witch making it possible to hurt her or him with silver, unbeknownst to the
victim of the spell.Than you could blame Hollywood.lol.
