I've had a suggestion that we should have a "movie night", probably
to be held at someone's house. We would get a movie, either VHS or
DVD, watch it and discuss it afterward, possibly watch the special
features on the DVD.
I think this is a good idea, however most people don't have room for
large groups of people in their living rooms and we also don't know
each other very well at this point (at least not most of us).
I just wanted to find out how many people would be interested in
doing this, and how many would be willing to host one. A large free
venue would be really nice, although if the group was too large, the
discussions might get out of hand. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks,
Don Drennan
There's a movie opening at the Drexel Grandview on Friday. Without
going
into details, I think that its opening may have something to do with a
conversation I had with Jeff Frank last week. It's THE KID STAYS IN
THE
PICTURE, the documentary about Robert Evans, the producer of
CHINATOWN,
former head of Paramount Pictures, and the guy Ali McGraw left for
Steve
McQueen. I feel somewhat responsible for its arrival but am concerned
about
whether anyone will attend given that Evans isn't exactly a household
name,
all national press on the movie died down weeks ago and, since the
movie
wasn't confirmed until yesterday afternoon, the Drexel publicist has
only a
few days to get word out. Realistically, a rave from Columbus Alive
can only
do so much on this front.
So far it's one of my favorites of the year, much more fun than a
documentary ought to be (in part because it's not necessarily the
truth but
Evans' larger-than-life version of it). It seems just the kind of
thing that
would interest people interested in the CFC, particularly because
it's a
great Hollywood story and the directors make gorgeous use of still
photography effects software. According to the Drexel ad, it'll only
be
around for one week with no late shows, so it'd be easy to miss.
Thanks for considering it.

From Tim Lucas:
Starting a week from Wednesday (10/09) there will be standup/improv
at the City Limits Cafe. It's on the West Side at Hall and Norton.
The show starts at 9:00 and will be about 45 minutes of open mike
stand ups and about 45 minutes of improv. We have a 12 week
commitment from the management, but still need to start strong.
If I find out anything from George Caleodis about our next improv
workshop, I'll let you know.
See you later,
Tim Lucas
I recently went to the Ohio Ren Fest down in Harveysburg, OH and had
a great time. I don't know how many people out there knew about it
or like that sort of thing, but I just thought I should tell people
about it, especially the actors out there who would like to get
medieval on the weekends. They are doing auditions for next year.

I think that type of laser would be very expensive to rent. I remember reading about James Cameron spending a lot for the one used in Aliens, unless you know somebody who owns one. My first guess is to try Theatre Magic, I think they are in Columbus, or SFX, also here in Cols.
Otherwise, if the people don't have to break the beam I'd use a bluescreen and do the effect in 3D with Lightwave and compositing.

Hi. That would be me. The effect we're talking about can be seen in the 'Rock With You' video by Michael Jackson, and in the remake of Land of the Lost as the 'time portal'. It's achieved by pointing a laser through a rotating mirror in smoke. I'm just not sure of the precise details, or how much the equipment would cost.

EXCERPTS FROM THE ARTICLE
--------------------------------------
"I was in Manhattan at the New York Independent Film Festival on
9/11," observes Columbus, Ohio-based filmmaker Peter John Ross, "and
it did have an effect on my film." Ross' 28-minute DV sci-fi film,
New World, which he calls a "demo-pilot," recently screened at the
San Diego Comic-Con International, the largest convention of sci-
fi/fantasy fans in the nation. "The best science fiction is always a
metaphor," Ross adds. "New World [which visualizes a feudal future
where humans have lost the Earth to insect-like invaders and must
wage guerilla war] is about terrorism. I'm using sci-fi to pose the
question: should we take a pacifist stance or fight back? Fighting
back always has consequences."
While the genre is currently a haven for our era's top-tier
directors, it also attracts filmmakers like Peter John Ross, who are
attacking sci-fi from the sub-basement of the industry. New World was
shot on a Canon GL1 (NTSC) for $1,000 and change. To enhance his
miniDV live action footage, prior to creating effects, Ross
discovered a simple trick. "The GL1 has a 58mm fixed lens that
accepts just about any Tiffen still photography filter," Ross
relates. "We used an enhancing filter that made the flat and dull DV
look amazing, especially shooting in Ohio in the fall."
All Ross had to create his 214 special effects shots (production
lasted 11 days, effects work took another 500!) was a Pentium 3 733
MHz computer with 512 RAM. The former brokerage-firm employee used
Adobe Premiere 6, Adobe After Effects 4, and Caligari trueSpace 4 for
his 3-D animation. "A lot of people don't think low-budget sci-fi for
independents is feasible," Ross concludes. "But, then it's also
become cool to criticize Phantom Menace because the story falls
short. Sci-fi is a great canvas to work on for any filmmaker. We're
only limited by our own imaginations."
Following Ross' lead, epic sci-fi films appear as easy as dialing in
a home PC. But will the results, even for indie darlings like
Soderbergh and Aronofsky, be future shock or schlock? Concludes
Sobchack, who's been charting the genre for more than two
decades: "What passes [in cinema] for a realistic representation of
our world doesn't seem somehow to get it anymore. The feel of science
fiction as a genre, when it's done well, creates this sense that it
captures our present moment much better than a 'realist setting.'"

I'm afraid I have no experience in that area, but I bet other people
here could help.
I know a lot about special effects and CGI, so I might be able to
answer questions on that topic, or provide help with things like
that. I've done a lot of work on commercials, but no feature film
work yet.

I didn't get a chance to talk to you at the meeting but I think I
could probably help out with that tunnel of light effect that you
talked about.
I think it would be a fairly simple thing to do in Lightwave 3D. I
think I've done similar things before if I understand you correctly.
Basically I would create a tube and add some procedural textures to
the inside which would move and give a sense of speeding through a
tunnel. It would be very easy to set up.
Alternatively, you might also use some video feedback, ala Doctor
Who, by pointing your camera at the monitor and adjusting the zoom
and light levels in the room. This might not be what you're looking
for though.
If you joined the group, maybe you can explain it better.
Don Drennan
Hi, I'm Doug Wu and I was at the CFC meeting last night. I guess the
movie group is now going to be called the Columbus Movie Club.
Anyway, I've written a feature and I'd like to see it made into a
movie. I don't know what the heck I'm doing and I'm looking for
advice.
Doug Wu
dougwu00@...
Hi. My name is Adam Davis. I was also at the meeting last night.
I've joined up to this group now. Hopefully I can make myself useful
around here.
I have some experience working on film and video, so if I can provide
services or even just advice form my experiences, just drop me a
line. And if anyone needs concept art or storyboards in the future, I
can most likely provide that as well.
Don,
This is Igor Kalennyy writing to you. I was present at yesterdays,
9/19/02 last cfc meeting. I was the guy in a white tshirt, last row.
Anyway,
This is a good idea of you to create this forum and
I think we could all use this as the information point where you
can see the news about , well, newly created cmc. At least, that's
what we decided yesterday, on the meeting. I think it's a bad idea to
let it all disappear (i meant , cfc). There has to be something for
movie enthusiasts and professionals alike, in Columbus area, and the
best thing we (people who attended the cfc meeting, and those who will
come later ) can do is to let the organization grow and continue
networking among the people.
It's not an organization, in full sense of a word, but if every one of
us has a drive and desire to make it one, - i think it will form the
structure slowly, bit by bit. It does not matter how much experience
once has or how much involved with movie craft anyone of us was before
yesterday meeting, I think what is important is the drive and will and
passion to have something beneficial to all of us in Columbus, that
can only be created and maintained by us, not someone else.
I would be glad to provide my help, however little it could be or not.
(providing the fact that I am not a movie pro, and can help only with
a little stuff)
Anyway, I think , the networking is the clue that will hold this
columbus club together and I, for one, would be very glad to see it
grow.
Great animations and 3-d pictures on your site, by the way.
Igor
In order to increase the usefulness of this group, please fill out a
Yahoo profile if you haven't already.
You can include information about yourself that might be helpful to
networking and finding people with similar interests.
If you have a photo of yourself, you should add that to your profile
too. It helps to put a name with a face so that people will recognize
you at meetings or events.
Thanks,
Don
Just wanted to pass this along to all who do computer animation and
compositing out there.
http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/icarus/
This is really cool! (if you do this sort of thing) Other software on
the market that does anything similar usually costs thousands of
dollars.
It will; correct lens distortions, track your camera movement, let
build 3D models of things in the scene via image based modeling.
"The video sequence calibration software may be used independently of
the other components for automatic camera tracking or matchmoving
(Lightwave/Maya/Houdini/Combustion/Flame/Inferno exports available).
This provides the capability to augment images or video sequences
with synthetic objects."
So, if you need to replace a billboard in your scene with something
you wipped up in Photoshop but the scene was shot hand held, you can
do that.
The software is a bit technical but it's probably worth spending time
to learn if you're doing a lot of digital effects.
Hope this helps,
Don

First let me say that this is only a message board. There will be no
regular meetings and no dues to pay. This doesn't rule out get-
togethers or parties or special events, I just won't be in charge of
organizing them. Please feel free to post announcements of such
things though, or anything else that people might be interested in.
Secondly, NO BASHING, FLAMING or NEGATIVITY allowed. As moderator I
will be taking a mostly hands off approach, unless the above rule is
not followed.
I am hopeful that people will join this group and make use of it.
Please post photos, files, links or anything you think would be of
