tuffedcrust
That's an interesting question
and I'll have to think about it. Violence does happen
- all the time. It's part of the real world.
"Touched by an Angel" has had episodes where explosions
happen and people are killed. I don't see where
depicting a riot or a war is in any way condoning it. Is it
better to pretend such things never happen and all is
peacefulness and light? Wars, etc., are periods of crisis -
and crisis is when people turn to God.
What do you
think?

ello everyone,

My name is Mike and I'm
new to this group.

In the last few months,
God has revealed to me the need to pray for the
actors and film makers working in Hollywood. I
personally believe that in these last days there is going to
be a revival in the movie industry. I know not
everybody will be saved, but I believe quite a few will be
with prayers and outreach from others. Please, help
inform others, get your local churches involved with
praying for these people.

I don't believe they
are evil villians out to destroy our society. Like a
lot of people they are just lost. I think most are
great talented and creative people. I think if more was
saved, we would see some awesome change.

I would
be interested in hearing your views. I invite any of
your to write me personally.

God

ello there,
I think that as Christian
filmmakers we do have a responsibility in what we create for
the public. We also have a responsibility in what we
see. I love film. I love the medium, I love the work -
I love it. BUT I need to be careful in choosing
what I see. I don't need to see a film that is going
to take my mind back to the time when I used to
swear like a sailor. I don't need to be exposed to
that. I don't need to see senseless killings. I don't
need to see a lot of what we see in the theatre. It
will affect me whether I choose to think it will or
not. So, in my view - the same goes for what we as
filmmakers produce. What ideas or themes should I be
planting into my viewers minds? Violence, disturbing
images, paganistic rituals or Family values, morality
tales, Biblical tales etc?

tuffedcrust,
Notice what you said "most
visually interesting movie of recent years" that's exactly
how satan attracts his victims, Adam and Eve’s apple
was also “visually interesting”. Satan knows how to
disguise his messages, if the film Natural Born Killers
didn’t have interesting visual photography (music video
style), nobody would have ever seen it. Of course the
photography was cool, but we are not talking about
cinematography. You asked: Can a Christian make films with
graphic violence? Answer: As Christian filmmakers we are
to make family films with a Gospel message. I
suggest you stay away from graphic violence in your films
unless the violence is justified by the story. And
besides, haven’t we seen enough violence coming from
Hollywood already? Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil,
but overcome evil with good.

Norton

agree that Spawn was a really bad movie. The
notion that Satan and his demons would try to break down
the gates of heaven (or whatever it was about) was
completely blasphemous. Not to mention that the movie just
sucked anyway. However, I loved Natural Born Killers
even though it was hard to watch at times. You can say
that you didn't like the violent nature of its
characters and the fact that there are no consequences for
them. But it cannot be denied that Natural Born Killers
was one of the most visually interesting movies of
recent years.
I think that it is style above
anything else that young filmmakers and wannabes like
myself are infatuated with. Which is why there have been
so many "Pulp Fiction" rip-offs lately. I do believe
that if a movie is going to include lots of violence,
it has to include an underlying moral message that
makes the film worthy enough to present such violence.
Carnage above any substance is what was responsible for
what I believe to be the decade's worst film, "The
Doom Generation". One of my favorite directors is John
Woo. Although his movies are some of the most violent
I have ever seen, they include themes of
redemption, loyalty, friendship, honesty, and self-sacrifice
give his films a heart. What I am wondering is, is
violence okay to show in films at all, or can it be used
in certain situations?

here are Christian filmmakers, writers, and
actors who are called by God to work and be a light
inside the Hollywood system, and some may never work or
produce a film with Christian values, yet they are saving
souls in the Motion Picture Industry. And there are
others, who are called to make theatrical films with
Christian values and challenge the Hollywood system
"against all odds". It all depends on what God is putting
in your heart and what He has called you to do. But
if you are both a film maker and a Christian, then
you should still "do what Jesus and the Apostles did”
(proclaim the Good News of the Gospel) only that we should
do it on celluloid, DVD, or Tape. Pray about it, and
let the Lord Jesus Christ always direct your path and
your films!
Norton/Christian filmmaker.com

hristian films can have violence in them as long
as the violence is justified. A film based on souls
in "Hell" could make a very violent movie, yet I'm
sure the Lord would want us to make such films. Just
don’t make films like "Natural Born Killers" or
"Spawn”.
Norton/Christian Filmmaker.com

s a Christian filmmaker your films should have a
purpose and a Gospel message. Don’t forget that Jesus
told many stories and all of them had a Kingdom
message behind them.
I believe the Lord is telling us
to make “all kinds of films” but to make them with
the Holly Spirit in mind and to do what Jesus did; He
told simple stories of everyday life; stories like
the
prodigal son, the reaper, the lost coin, the ten talents,
etc. (films that go with the times of this age of
course). But remember, is not the story, but the
revelation message behind it that really
counts.
Norton/Christian Filmmaker.com

K. I have been a film fan since I was thirteen
years old and I have decided that it is the field that
I want to go into. I am 19 years old, attend a
community college, and am a Christian. I have had many
struggles lately, but I am trying to change my lifestyle
and live for Jesus. My favorite movies are DR.
STRANGELOVE, 2001, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, HARD BOILED, 32 SHORT
FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD, and VERTIGO. Many of these
movies include some graphic violence, thematic elements,
and language.
Now, as Christains, is it OK to
include such material in films if it serves a purpose?
Did Jesus say that we must do EVERYTHING in his name?
Do we have a responsiblity to spread the truth, and
does this mean that making more "mainstream" movies as
opposed to Christian ones is wrong? I really need some
advice. If anyone has gone through the same thing, has
any scripture, or anything to say about this please
post something or email me at stuffedcrust@....

ello everyone. My name is Leo and I am so glad
that there is a forum for christian video and
filmmakers. I started a production company a few years back
called Fellowship Video Production. I got the name from
a quote that my pastor says after we take sacrament
(Come on everybody, let's fellowship). To me that meant
let's gather and greet each one and share of God's
goodness. So, now when people hear our name, it kind of
sticks out as a christian organization. Anyway, we've
been blessed to produce a gospel music video program,
as well as assist several ministries in the
Nashville area for their telecasts. God is really moving
throughout Nashville. I am also involved with the GMA,
Stellar Awards, and the Gospel Heritage Foundation. I
would love to talk with you all and assist you in any
ways regarding video and film production. As lng as
you remember that it is God who gets all of the
glory, then it will stand.

Please email me at
fellowshipvideo@...
I look forward to hearing from you all pretty
soon.

hat's actually a pretty kewl idea, to combine
drama and film. I have explored that idea with a couple
of drama groups I know, and, in some ways, they are
open to it, but they tend to want to be very careful
about cameras.

Either way - go west young ma...
oops, you'd fall in the Pacific %) Seriously, go for
it. The idea I gave you for short films is actually
what I do with a friend of mine, so I came out
somewhat biased. If you feel you have access to the
ability and talent to produce a full-fledged 1 1/2 - 2 hr
feature film, then do it!

Another thing, though,
about short films, is that they allow people to get a
general idea of what you can do. It's kinda like a
resume. Don't forget that one of my favorite directors,
David Fincher (Se7en, Alien3, The Game) started out
making music videos, and even the great Alfred Hitchcock
made short films.

Either way, you got the
prayers for God's guidance! Peace!

Scott

erhaps I could have been a bit more specific on
what exactly was going on. The church I attend has the
nickname "the Church that rocks". We have a very active
drama team, several praise bands, it is a very active
church. During services they use drama and music very
effectively to convey the topics. They have on occasion used
video, however it has always been cheesy and of poor
quality (I believe due to lack of talent behind the
camera). What I would like to do is actualy start a "film
team" which would work with the drama team. The few
people I have spoken to about it weren't eager to start
anything like this.

My ideas were not simply to
create short videos for Sunday services, but also to
create full feature films, to be viewed apart from
normal services. I know the talent is there, in fact it
is exciting for me to see how much talent exists in
my church.

I know God has some plan in store
for me in this respect. I appreciate any prayers
also. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on what
happens.

David

ey, fina! I love the idea. It's an open
opportunity for ministry. Exactly what kind of blockages are
you running into? Are they just throwing the idea out
the window completely? If so, why? Does the word
"film" frighten them? (Are you wanting to use film or
video? I'm going to assume video) Are they concerned
that it might not really be a good ministry?

As
an idea, you may want to get a few friends together
and actually make a short (5 minute) piece. Then,
turn around and ask someone, say the youth pastor, if
they would mind using it and working it into a lesson.

Finally... don't forget: although your church may not invest
time or money, that doesn't mean you should bury your
talent. Ask God to show you where you can use it to His
glory!

Peace!

Scott

contains a lot of Christianity in it. This Sci-Fi epic is
a creation that God has helped me to envision, and
I believe that it is in his will for this to become
a reality. This Sci-Fi epic has been in the works
for about the lasr 4 years, but it wasn't until I got
