Can The Horror Genre be redeemed?   Message List

Re: [Christian Movie Making Forum] Can The Horror Genre be redeemed?

Hi,
If you ask me, i would say "YES".

As christian film makers we sure can tap into the
horror genre. But, we need to redifine what horror is.

I may be wrong, but i think if we weave stories around what is actually
happening around us, then we may, as christian film makers, tap into
the right place. And not make horror movies ONLY based on end times.

We need to take stories from the different Tribes (people who live in the jungles,
people who actuallyspirits etc...) that we find in our countries. Then based on
these, we need o talk about missionaries who have gone to such places and have
shared the gospel.

The fears, the "HORRIFIC" obstacles they faced etc.... Just weave stories
around the actual beliefs that exist amongst us. Then may be our horror
movies would make more sense and get people thinking than just 'Scare'
them.

You know, the bottom line is like.... We should make movies that show people
who have stood fearless amongst a world of horrific (the spirit kinda horror) happenings
around them.

I don't know if i'm right... Would certainly like to hear from the others too.

Sam.

Doug Phillips from Vision Forum Ministries, was promoting their
commentary on "Rescuing the Western from Hollywood Marxists" and had
this to say about the Horror Genre:
"Keep in mind that not all genres are created equal. Horror, for
example, is rooted in presuppositions that are explicitly at war with
biblical Christianity, including unholy fear. Consequently, "horror"
cannot be redeemed without fundamentally redefining the genre
altogether. That is why I argue that "Christian horror" is an
oxymoron. Attempts by well-intentioned Christians to appeal to youth
by using the premises of the horror genre to communicate righteous
conclusions are theologically schizophrenic and thus ill-conceived."

I was pondering what he said here about Horror movies. I had heard
from a friend that the classic horror novels were created to show
consequences for sin in the backlash of the "enlightenment period" -
though I haven't researched the history of it so I can't really
comment further on it.

What do you all think about this? Is there a way for Christians to
tap into the genre of Horror? And look at a lot of the scare tactics
that happen in some of end time movies -- isn't that sort of the same
type of thing? Some evil presence is trying to take over the world --
they borrow from the Omen movies and then there are movies where
possession occurs and it needs to be cast out. That stuff can be
horrifying even if an empowered Christian is introduced in the film
and the Spirit of God puts a stop to it.

What do you think?
