Written by Catherine Girczyc and directed by Jonathan A. Rosenbaum, this
episode guest stars Daniella Evangelista (
http://www.daniellaevangelista.com ) as Ashley Merrin, a teenager so heavily
into the Goth scene that she sells her soul to the Devil (this week played by
Richard Side) to become a full-fledged, sun-sensitive, bat-winged vampire
with the kind of fangs that would put a sabre-toothed tiger to shame. Aidan
Drummond also gets to stretch his acting wings with some very intense one-on-
ones with Satan, as the Prince of Lies repeatedly taunts and harasses poor
Gabe throughout the episode.
Rainmaker was really on their game in this ep with some top-notch work,
including the swirling black smoke forming into bat wings visual effect
(cool!), and Mike Plowman's musical score added the perfect touch to every
scene, as usual.
I only have one complaint about 'The Vampire' and that's with the directing,
which wasn't nearly as strong as I've seen in previous episodes. It seemed to
me, at times, that the actors -- both regular and guest cast -- weren't
really nailing each scene, their performances either seeming forced and
artificial or just flat and uninspired, like their minds were on something
else (Don't forget to buy cat litter and pick up the dry cleaning on the way
home from work). I know these actors are capable of much better, but Jonathan
Rosenbaum -- due to his lack of experience, I suspect -- just couldn't pull
it out of them.
Overall, a fine episode. Definitely on my top 20, for personal reasons (I'm a
card carrying Goth chick who wears satin corsets, fishnet stockings and black
lipstick when the sun goes down).
