Catch an exclusive sneak preview
of “LOLA,” the latest work from Brillante Mendoza. Preceded by his film
Kinatay (The Execution of P), which earned him the prestigious Best
Director Award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival last May 2009, Lola is

Starring Philippine cinema icon Anita Linda in the leading role,
Lola is about two elderly women who try to cope and survive life’s
harsher realities for the elderly. Both bear the consequences of a
crime involving their respective grandsons — one is the victim, the
other is the suspect. Both weak and poor, they laboriously solicit
money in the midst of a storm — one for the victim’s burial, the other
for the suspect’s bail bond.

11th Cinemanila Kicks Off with Brillante Mendoza’s Lola
Starting things off with a bang, the 11th Cinemanila International Film
Festival showcases Brillante Mendoza’s latest work, Lola, as its
opening film. Director Mendoza’s latest work, Lola was preceded by his
film Kinatay (The Execution of P), which earned him the prestigious
Best Director Award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival last May 2009.
Lola is slated as the Philippine surprise entry in the 66th Venice Film
Festival, (Main Competition) which counts acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee

the suspect. Both weak and poor, they laboriously solicit money in the
midst of a storm — one for the victim’s burial, the other for the
suspect’s bail bond.
The association between Cinemanila and Mendoza goes way back, as the
festival was one of the very first to give this now world-renowned
filmmaker international recognition. Mendoza won the Grand Prize and
Best Director Award in Cinemanila’s Digital Lokal competition – his
first international award – for his film Manoro with Christian Jeune of
Cannes Film Festival at the helm of the 2006 Main Competition Jury.
Mendoza was also the Director in Focus during the festival’s momentous
10th edition last year. And for Cinemanila 2009, Mendoza is now head of
the Main Competition Jury of this year’s festival.
Raymond Red’s Himpapawid is Cinemanila’s Closing Film
Closing the curtain to the upcoming 11th Cinemanila International Film
Festival is the much-anticipated Himpapawid (Manila Skies) from
award-winning independent filmmaker Raymond Red. Himpapawid, Red’s
most recent film, is the closing film of the 2009 edition of the
festival, which will run from October 15-25, 2009 at the Bonifacio
Global City, Taguig.
An official entry in the Main Competition of the 2009 Tokyo
International Film Festival, Himpapawid tells “the astounding story of
a lone deranged hijacker pushed to the edge of insanity as he struggles
with the oppression of surviving in modern Philippine society.”
Inspired by the true story of the May 2000 PAL Flight 812 hijacking en
route from Davao to Manila, the film follows the tale of a desperate
man from the countryside on a wretched path to destruction that
ultimately leads him to the insane hijacking of a plane. The film
showcases Raul Arellano in his first lead role together with veteran
actors John Arcilla and Ronnie Lazaro.
Red, who secured the 2000 Cannes Palme d’Or for his short film Anino
(Shadows), is one of the pioneers of the modern Filipino independent
cinema movement. As the source of inspiration for a new generation of
independent filmmakers, he has been honing his craft at the outskirts
of Philippine cinema while being a regular lecturer to numerous film
workshops and mentor to a number of well-known indie filmmakers, doing
his utmost to promote the independent scene movement..

Tragic news for the filmmaking community. Film Critic Alexis Tioseco and his girlfriend Nika Bohinc were murdered last night at their home at Times Street, Quezon City. I'll just quote Ewong Martinez from his Facebook status: "Just heard this report over DZMM Tele-radyo: One of the maids (Magdalena) was kept in the room and gagged. There are
4 suspects; apparently, the other maid (Criselda) was the one who let
in the three robbers. Later, Magdalena heard gunshots when Alexis and
Nika had arrived....... The suspects got away with a white Ford Lynx.
Magdalena then struggled out and called for help."
Let us pray for Alexis, Nika and their families, and for the swift apprehension of the culprits...
Folks, the video below contains the picture of one of the suspects in the killing of film critics Alexis Tioseco & Nika Bohinc: the missing maid, Criselda Dayag. Please forward to as many people as possible. We might get lucky and find her.
From Yvette Tan's FB: "The wake of Alexis Tioseco and Nika Bohinc will
be held at the St. Francis Chapel, Santuario de San Antonio, Forbes
Park, Makati. 7pm [starting] tonight [Sept. 2, Wed]."
Folks, we also need your help! This msg from Kints Kintana: "Please go to
Alexis Tioseco's place, 39B Times St., West Ave., QC. We need to secure
their house 24/7 to prevent tampering of evidence. Right now, we're
taking shifts guarding the place. There's Brgy. Tanod back-up, but we
still need people to reinforce security. Police won't arrive until 12
noon tomorrow, Thursday." Please pass. Thanks!
Filmmaker Sigfried 'Sig' Sanchez -- http://bigredbakulaw.multiply.com/ -- is in the ICU of the Perpetual Succor
Hospital at F. Cayco St. along Espaa in front of UST. He had an
appendectomy, but because of his diabetes there were complications.
This message was forwarded to Sig's contacts by his wife Kaye. Claire Agbayani also posted on the Writers Studio Facebook group that according to Sig's brother, Seymour a.k.a. Meyor, the operation was a delicate one. Meanwhile, JP Carpio texted that Job Pagsibigan visited Sig, and relayed that the family is hoping that Sig's condition will stabilize within 24 hours so he can be moved to a regular room. Please
pray for Sig's recovery...

When we talk
about control in the practices and production of art, do we put
emphasis on form or content? When do we draw the line between
regulation for the purposes of direction/development and
repressive/oppressive intervention? As art functions in service to the
society, how can/should the agents of the society be of service to art?
Up to what borders shall art be regulated? Moreso, do we need
regulations? What is it for? At present, does it serve its purpose?
This forum queries on several issues on art freedom of expression,
censorship, institutional assistance, and the dynamics of exhibition,
among others. Art and Regulation will be held on March 19, 2009, at
6pm, at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery as the first of a series of
forums/symposia/seminars under the SineSiyasat Project of UPFI.
SineSiyasat aims to provide a venue for discussions and educational
dialogue between scholars, practitioners and students of film and the
other arts. It wishes to interrogate, dissect and address important
issues concerning filmmakers, artists, academicians and students.
SineSiyasat is an extension project of the UP Film Institute. For
confirmation of attendance and other inquiries, contact Bang Dizon at

"Bye-Bye Birdie"
Dokumentaryo ni Howie Severino para sa I-Witness
January 26, 2009
"Bye-Bye Birdie"
(Counting the ways of loving birds)
Howie Severino's I-Witness documentary
January 26, 2009
Fish nets are designed to catch fish. But in the cold mountain passes
of Luzon , in the darkest of nights, fish nets sweep the air to catch
wild birds. Some of the birds are colorful and rare, but nearly all
are eaten. More than a few could be migratory birds bringing in bird flu.
Howie Severino and his team of adventure-seeking documentarists hang
out with these native bird trappers and try to understand their rugged
culture and raw motivations. Accompanying the documentarists on their
journey to Nueva Vizcaya are two passionate bird lovers, artist Arnel
Telesforo and bird guide Nicky Icarangal, who struggle to come to
terms with the harsh treatment of their feathered friends, and remind
viewers that the Filipino's relationship with the wild is changing.
Howie and his team also venture with Arnel to Balanga, Bataan where
wild migratory birds in the thousands are not harmed. Rather, in the
bright morning sun, they are counted, recorded, and photographed by
Arnel and friends with tender loving care.
In this story of life and death, set in both night and day, I-Witness
finds a parable that encompasses both the ruthless force of human need
and the redemptive power of compassion.
The documentary ends with a stark choice facing the documentarists: do
they remain detached observers of willful killing or do they cross the
line to extend innocent life?
Howie Severino's thought-provoking documentary airs this Monday on
I-Witness after the late night newscast Saksi.
“The lives of saints
and men and women of history offer so many lessons and I find their
stories of transformations and redemption very appealing. The many
tribulations they faced and how they triumphed from it all present so
many lessons and inspiration, which sad to say barely reach the young,
that is why I am making them as plays,” answers Francis Villacorta,
talent-manager, writer and director when asked why he is undertaking
this present endeavor.
“Through our offerings in Francis
Villacorta Presents, we will bring this advocacy of mine to fruition
and we see theater as the best medium to use for this cause since we
all know the power of theater to inform, entertain and educate,” he
adds.
“Dominic” is the first production of Francis Villacorta Presents. It is a concert drama on the life of Dominic Savio, the boy saint who led a blessed life and died in his teens. A student of St. John Bosco, the young boy lived by the motto: “Death but not Sin”.
During his lifetime, Dominic exemplified the many fine qualities of youth and exhibited all the virtues of a saint.
Performing
in Dominic are Christian Vallaser, Richard Manabat, Andrei David, Troy
De Guzman, Gina Villa, Abel Napuran, Patrick Jimenez, Jahymarie
Villacorta, John Rhoderey and Joshua Matthew Dizon, Robert Correa and
Perry Escaño. The play also features an interactive band performance
by the Rollback Band.
In February, Francis Villacorta Presents the Jose P. Laurel Story, a play chronicling the life of former President Laurel from his youth to the founding of the Lyceum of the Philippines; and come March, The Life of Saint Augustine, a musical on the life of Augustine of Hippo, set to the music of Waldy del Rosario.
In August till the end of 2009, the following productions will come to life on stage – The Chronicles of Narnia, a trilogy of
O. Henry Stories specifically The Last Leaf, After Twenty Years and The Gift of the Magi, play adaptations of Cinema Paradiso and La Strada, and Fransico Baltazar.
Francis Villacorta Presents Dominic is slated on January 30, 2009, 6pm., at the Savio Dome,
Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati.

Even though Ploning director Dante Nico Garcia is busy advocating
for his film Ploning in the United States, he took time to attend
the Asian Festival of 1st Films (AFFF), which took place at
Singapore from December 4 to 10.
Direk Ga (Dante's nickname) introduced his film about Ploning, a
woman from Cuyo, Palawan (portrayed by Judy Ann Santos) but he did
not stay for the awarding ceremony that took place last December 11.
Ploning producer Jourdan Sebastian accepted the trophy in behalf of
Direk Ga.
The effort was well worth it since the first-time director was able
to beat three directors of the films Firaaq (India), Ganglamedo
(China), and Little Zizou (India). According to the official website
of AAFF, the Filipino director was awarded Best Director
for "successfully creating an extraordinary love story filled with
local flavour in his film Ploning."
In a phone interview with Direk Tikoy Aguiluz, he informed PEP
(Philippine Entertainment Portal) about the triumph of Ploning in
the Asian Festival of 1st Films.
Direk Tikoy, described by AAFF as a leading figure in the
alternative cinema movement in the Philippines, was one of the three
jury members who chose this year's winners. The other members were
Hong Kong director Yim Ho, Silver Bear winner in Berlinale for the
1996 film The Sun Has Ears, and Nadia Tass, one of Australia's most
respected and unique filmmakers.
The Best Film award went to Firaaq, which is written and directed by
actress Nandita Das. She also took home the awards for Best
Screenplay and the Foreign Correspondents Association Purple Orchid
Award for Best Film.
Another Philippine entry, Pisay directed by Auraeus Solito, was
nominated in the Best Producer category but it did not bag the
prize. Aside from being nominated for Best Director, Ploning was
also shortlisted in the Best Screenplay category.
This year, a total of 638 submissions came from 26 countries for the
fourth edition of the AAFF. The list was trimmed down to 28 films
and documentaries that competed for the 11 awards categories.
