THE WEAKEND NEWS, every Monday, 11:30 P.M., on TV5
To complete the programming line-up composed of daytime and primetime
shows, TV5 offers another set of interesting and edgy programs that
are designed to satisfy your late night viewing habits: The Weakend
News, I Am Ninoy, and TOYZ.
The comedy in current events is presented in the satirical show The
Weakend News, airing every Monday with host Ramon Bautista, supported
by his wacky cast of reporters including cult favorite, Mommy Elvie.
Taking on the issues of the past week, the show is a parody of the
news purveyed by government authorities and reported by the
conventional news media.
Every Tuesday night, Bianca Gonzales takes us on a journey of
discovering the "Ninoys" of the new generation, I Am Ninoy, founded
on the popular campaign that is now developed for TV. The show
started airing last week, marking the would-have-been 76th birthday
of Ninoy Aquino. Ultimately, the show features inspiring stories of
the youth who share the values of heroism, justice and freedom,
following the examples of the martyred Ninoy Aquino.
Catering to the lifestyle of men is the magazine show every Wednesday
night, TOYZ—the newest male-oriented program that features the latest
gadgets, cars, bling, and everything that tickles men's fancies.
What better way to wrap up your day than to tune in to these
interesting, inspiring and hip new programs every weekdays with The
Weakend News every Monday, I Am Ninoy on Tuesdays, and TOYZ every
Wednesday, all scheduled to shake up your late night TV-viewing at
11:30 p.m., only on TV5.
Watch out for more of TV5's big and exciting second season shows as
the channel retains its solid number three position on Philippine TV.

The first annual Muhr AsiaAfrica Competition at the Dubai
International Film Festival (Diff) offers a selection of short films
from Africa, Central Asia and the Far East offering a bouquet of
stories, organisers said.
The Muhr AfricaAsia competition was introduced this year to stimulate
and expose filmmaking from emerging markets. Nashen Moodley, Director
of AsiaAfrica Programming for Diff, said: "Short films remain
important because they are where a lot of filmmakers cut their teeth,
while some directors prefer to remain in the form because its
limitations challenge them. For audiences, a short programme is a
delight because it allows them to sample stories from a vast region,
incorporating a variety of different themes and forms. Viewers that
prefer diversity should consider our short programmes, which will not
disappoint."
Three of the films originate from Africa: The Birthday is a
submission by Burkina Faso's legendary filmmaker Idrissa Ouedraogo
which sees the beautiful Awa decide to marry for money rather than
love; in Expectations, a young man returns to his village in Chad
tired and listless, but must confront the people who lent him the
money for his journey; Jesus and the Giant, set in Johannesburg,
follows an avenging woman who seeks out the man that battered her
friend.
Further to the east, Iran's 35 Metriye Sathe Ab (35 Metres from the
Water) depicts moments of connection and beauty between unlikely
lovers; in Ayak Al Tinda (Downstairs), a Turkish manual worker's
monotonous life is shattered by a striking revelation; Kam Sanabanyz
(Everything is OK), Kyrgyzstani director Akjol Bekbolotov's film on
the plight of the thousands of homeless children of Bishkek, is an
impressive and moving glimpse of life on the streets; Bakhytzhamal,
another one from Kazakhstan, depicts a mentally-disturbed man running
away from a sanatorium to meet his old flame, while India's Dhin Tak
Dha depicts another escape – a village garage mechanic who falls in
with a troupe of traditional touring performers.
From East Asia, Japanese black comedy Daichi O Tataku Onna (Woman Who
Is Beating the Earth) depicts a lonely and bored butcher. Shifting
gears, Ambulancia (Ambulance) introduces a group of desperate
Filipino ambulance drivers who believe that running over stray street
animals can save dying patients' lives, while Shao Nian Xue (Young
Blood) takes us on a fun ride to a crowded housing complex in late
1980s Shanghai where teenage hormones run rampant. The Taiwanese Tian
Hei (The End of the Tunnel) is another take on young love, wherein a
blind high school student bonds with an unlikely friend by using his
piano skills, and Malaysia's Chicken Rice Mystery shows a young boy
as he ponders one of the greatest mysteries of his life – his mothers
appalling cooking.
Muhr AsiaAfrica shorts will be screened in three separate programmes
during the Dubai film festival from December 11 until 18.
the festival has been moved to january 8 & 9, 2009. it's open to college student
filmmakers
from all over the country.

Perry Escańo: Comedy Comes Natural for this actor in Scaregivers
If action flicks ruled the Box Office ten years ago, comedy
films have overtaken them few years ago. And so, predictably, local film
industry is rushing to do more comedies.
Says actor Perry Escańo; "Action films are overdone in
local films. People are bored of those themes. They are looking for something
light. I am also looking into scripts that have comedy."
Perry Escańo, has generally been typecast in donning cunning
and sly villain roles who’s appears quite normal on the surface of daytime and
primetime television, a serious actor who can also go the comic route.
Doing a comedy is not new to his genre, Escańo was part of a
successful hit comedy-fantasy “Kokey” and the lead role in Bombita, a black
comedy questions the blind obedience and subservience of young rookies in the
military."Yeah, it's not new to me
to do a comedy, says Escańo, "At one point it was not easier to do comedy
just because you're new and not coming from there, and you can’t just kick it
out, you know? But it's hard because you need the right project, and you want
the right combo of people and one person's humor is different from another's.
Yet if you find something that hits everyone, it is like, 'Ah, there it is!"
Perry is talking about his new movie entitled Scaregivers, a horror comedy
movie directed by Uro de la Cruz, produced by Mike TuvieraofAPT
Entertainment and scheduled hit the theaters on November 26. "I am dying
to do a comedy," he says. “I wanted to do a film that will make people
laugh.” He plays Dr. Joey Portugal, a psychiatrist doctor assigned to the
treatment and prevention of disorders of the mind with Jose Manalo and Wally
Bayola psychiatric illness. “Scaregivers is a very funny and entertaining movie
and you will enjoy it immensely.”Ehra
Madrigal and Iza Calzado are also lead stars of the movie.
He adds finding a good comedy is harder than finding a good drama - in
Escańo -speak, it's “big time” difficult. "Shifting from serious to comedy keeps
me fresh as an actor. You want to find characters that you haven't seen
yourself do and that maybe no one has seen before. I’m thankful to APT
Entertainment for giving me this opportunity to be part of this big slapstick
project."
Escańo has built a solid career out of strong supporting
roles and memorable villains. Perry will start filming Mayor Jejomar Binay life
story as Erwin Binay the son of the Mayor. He is also part of Gantimpala’s EL
Filibusterismo as one of the immortal characters Kabesang Tales and his
struggle for justice. Performances will run until the end of November and be
re-staged in January 2009.
Gantimpala Theater closes its 31st Season with A Life in the Slums, written by Rolando S. Tinio, National Artist for Theater, which was awarded first prize, in the English division of the 1975 Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards. This
announcement came from Tony Espejo, artistic director, who also directs the play.
A Life in the Slums is a comedy
of manners
in nine scenes with musical numbers that presents the intertwining
lives of Henny, a truck diver; the twins Millie and Annie; the neighbor
Salud, the neighborhood hunk and Roger, every body’s lover.
One afternoon, Millie (Kimberly Diaz) gets a surprise visit from her
sister Annie (Monica Llamas), in the squatters’ area where she resides.
The two share pleasantries and discuss the many happenings in their
respective lives.
Millie
reveals the wonders of being part of the “real world,” in the slums,
with her truck driver husband Henny (alternately portrayed by Xeno
Alejandro and Francis Cruz III), and children. For Millie, despite the
squalor, stench, confusion, fistfights, rumormongers, and the people’s
search for their daily existence, being in the slums is her version of
“heaven on earth.”
Annie, on the other hand, laments the sorry state of her affluence. She
feels “filthy” because of the many transgressions of the people
surrounding her – their mother’s accidental death due to gluttony,
their father’s extra-marital affairs, her marriage on the rocks with
Roger (Jojo Riguerra) who happens to be Millie’s former lover and her
incapacity to become a mother.
In
the end, the two sisters agree to reverse their roles, both hoping that
they will discover true happiness in their newly acquired neighborhood
and personas.
Tony Espejo says, “I am directing the play as a theatre of the absurd production because obviously, National Artist Rolando Tinio
wrote it so that it can be performed as such. It is very funny; biting
at some points, and will definitely open the eyes of people on the
ridiculousness and hypocrisy of the rich and their ambivalent attitude
towards the poor. One day they embrace them, the next day, they loathe
them.”
A Life in the Slums is
the fifth season of Gantimpala Theater’s National Artist Production
Series. Yearly, the company stage plays written by national artists for
theater and literature to give its audiences the opportunity to
appreciate and understand the artistic contributions made by these
masters of the dramatic and literary arts.
Helping
Espejo create the impoverished world of Millie and Annie are Andy
Villareal (lights designer); Marianne Sedotes (set designer); Albert
Figueras (costume designer); Joey de Guzman (musical composer); Jorge
Cabullo (production manager) and Michael King Urieta (stage manager).
A Life in the Slums is fully supported by the National Parks Development Committee.
Performances
are on December 5-6, ( 10am / 2pm ), at the AFP Theater, in Quezon City
, December 12-14, ( 10am / 2pm ) SM South mall in Las Piñas City.
Shows
will resume next year with play dates on January 23-25, ( 10am / 2pm )
at the AFP Theater, and February 6-7, at the SM South mall in Las Piñas
City.

was recently used in Steven Soderbergh's "Che" duo, Peter Jackson's
upcoming "Crossing the Line" and "Angels and Demons."

FROM HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: New Filipino films challenge status quo
By Jonathan Landreth
Nov 8, 2008, 10:16 PM ET
NEW YORK -- The crumbling Manila movie theater at the center of
director Brillante Mendoza's indie film "Serbis" could be a body-
double for Filipino moviemaking.
"But no, please, don't say that," protests Yam Laranas, another
director, whose just-completed Hollywood remake of his own 2004
horror film "Sigaw" signals a possible new career path for Filipino
artists.
"There's also a new breed coming up with new styles and techniques
and adapting to new ways of getting out there," Laranas, 39, says
over the phone from Manila.
Remakes? New techniques? It's about time for a second coming because
making movies for the largely Catholic audience in the Southeast
Asian nation of 90 million people hasn't paid much to more than a few
lucky filmmakers for at least 10 years.
Even celebrity-obsessed Filipinos now wait months to watch movies on
TV or cable. In the global recession, they're sure to snap up first-
run films on pirated DVDs for 30 Philippine Pesos ($0.63) rather than
splurge tickets costing four times as much.
According to the Motion Picture Association of America, which -- at
last check in 2005 -- estimated 78% of the discs sold in the
Philippines were bootlegs, Filipino cinema owners are the worst
offenders in Asia for failing to stop illegal camcording. "We stand
by these numbers today," an MPA official says.
These days, the Philippines releases fewer than 50 mainstream films a
year into its cinemas, down from nearly 300 a year during the heyday
of the 1970s and '80s. By the early 1990s, when a spate of bomb
scares at shopping malls scattered moviegoers, the industry was in a
tailspin.
Rising as fast as the industry around him collapsed, 48-year-
old "Dante" Mendoza, (many Filipinos take nicknames to shorten long,
formal Christian names), took "Serbis," his seventh film, to Cannes
in May. The film, set in a rundown family-owned cinema whose owners,
to make ends meet, resort to showing skin flicks to crowds of gay
hustlers, didn't win but it did sell: Fortissimo Films rapidly cut
deals for distribution in Canada, France, Israel, the Benelux
countries and the U.S. -- even though it was barely seen in the
Philippines.
There, screens are dominated by Filipino-language comedies and John
Hughes-style teenybopper movies, most of which get a run for their
money from Hollywood films in English, the nation's fluent second
tongue.
Indeed, the MPA doesn't complain about Filipino market barriers. Film
imports aren't capped as they are in China and local movie houses
often favor Hollywood blockbusters made for hundreds of millions of
dollars over even the biggest local films. The average local budget
is less than 35 million pesos ($728,000).
Refusing to call the glass half empty, Laranas says that, after 300
years "in the convent" (under Spanish rule) and 45 years "under
Hollywood's spell" (as a U.S. colony until 1946), the storytelling
culture of The Philippines now faces a new opportunity.
"In terms of canvas and the medium, it's all changed. New filmmakers
will eventually become the mainstream, changing the story as they
go," says Laranas, whose real name is William.
Paving the way for part of this new wave was Cinemalaya, a local film
festival held in Manila each July for the last four years. ("Malaya"
means "freedom" in Tagalog, the dominant Filipino dialect).
Funded by TV and cable station owner Tony "Boy" Cojuangco and the
Film Development Council of the Philippines, Cinemalaya grants each
winning project 500,000 pesos (around $10,000).
Early Cinemalaya selection committee member and judge "Manet" Dayrit
says most projects are made by a crew of friends for less than 2
million pesos ($41,000). She says their quality has risen rapidly
each year.
However, Dayrit, the managing director of Roadrunner Network, the
Philippines' largest post-production house (in turn owned by Star
Cinemas, the biggest studio), cautions that aspirants to Mendoza's
fast path to glory could be disappointed.
"Young, fresh filmmakers are making digital movies with a new outlook
and without a formula," she says. "Trouble is, most of them still
lack distributors and a real market locally or overseas. They may be
capturing the imagination at film festivals, but as a business, we
still have to figure this out."
An optimist, Laranas still allows "99% of the movies in the
resurgence are of low technical quality, presenting real problems for
overseas distributors."
"Sigaw" (and now its remake "The Echo") is one of the lucky ones. It
was inspired by a real-life murder in Laranas' Manila apartment
building. He says it made back four times its $300,000 budget at the
domestic boxoffice and then "more than paid back its budget" again
when No. 2 Filipino studio, Regal Entertainment, sold remake rights
to Roy Lee and RightOff Entertainment in Los Angeles.
Elsewhere, Chris Martinez, 37, won the audience award at the Pusan
International Film Festival in October with his directorial
debut, "100." Unlike the escapist scripts he'd written with names
like "Bridal Shower" and "Bikini Open," "100" chronicles a cancer
patient going through her list of things to do before she dies.
Still, the movie is a celebration, Martinez says on the phone from
Manila.
Martinez says he has nothing against the Filipino stories that do
well at foreign film festivals that exoticize and romanticize
poverty, but wants the world to know that his country has "other
stories away from the slums and squatter areas."
Though Martinez hopes "100" is the first Filipino indie to succeed in
telling a story about Manila's middle, educated, financially
comfortable class, the film hasn't yet made any money. Still, he
feels that audiences have liked it for its perceived variety.
"They must have been shocked to see that we too love Haagen Dazs,
travel to Disneyland and drive SUVs," Martinez said.
But what an audience finds entertaining is different all over the
world and isn't guaranteed to travel. As such, Wouter Barendrecht,
Fortissimo Films co-chairman, says that "Serbis" was sold not as a
Filipino film but rather as a film by Brillante Mendoza. So-
called "passport sales," made on the director's nationality, can only
be made once or twice, he says.
Noting that many Filipino dramas are sobby, three-hanky affairs,
Barendrecht says, "If you're Meryl Streep, in the West you win an
Oscar for crying without tears. In Southeast Asia, the dry-cry is not
appreciated. This can be a commercial handicap."
Hence, even when a film like "Serbis" lands big-territory
distribution it still isn't guaranteed to make bundles. Regent Films
will release "Serbis" in New York and L.A. in Spring 2009, targeting
Filipinos, film buffs and, says Mark Reinhart, the gay community,
which "should help the film a lot." Still, Reinhart says, referring
to the leading art house cinema chains in the U.S., "The Laemmles and
the Landmarks will take it, but I don't think it will go much
further."

WHAT: Komikera #5 Exhibit Opening WHEN: November 18, Tuesday, 6 pm WHERE: Ishmael Bernal Gallery, UP Film Institute
Komikera (http://profiles.friendster.com/12188473)
is a group of three multidisciplinary artists -- Lea Lim, Vivian N.
Limpin, Teta Tulay --who collaborate on komiks-on-the wall exhibits and
publish their own komiks.
In the last
quarter of 2007, revered theater critic Amadis Ma. Guerrro, wrote this review,
“Legitimate theater invaded the malls (SM Southmall Cinema) with Gantimpala
Theater’s “Ang Pagong at ang Matsing,” directed by Tony Espejo
and performed before a big crowd of grade school kids. It was an entertaining
cavalcade of song, dance and humorous situations amidst a forest setting. The
music of Jesse Lucas ends in a rousing call to preserve the environment.”
In the last quarter of 2008, Gantimpala Theater received its biggest
surprise, “Ang Pagong at ang Matsing”, written by multi-Palanca
winner J. Dennis Teodosio, with music composed by award winning musical
composer, Jesse Lucas.
Based on the comic strip drawn by
national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, the children’s musical was about
a kind hearted turtle and an arrogant monkey who see a floating banana tree on
the river. The banana tree became the bone of contention of the two.
The artistic trio of Lucas,
Teodosio and Espejo made the strip into a full length musical in Filipino that
added additional characters such as animal side kicks and talking trees, laced
with engaging tunes and lively choreography plus kids and the young-at-heart
get their fill of lessons about friendship, fairness, forgiveness, sharing and
love for the environment.
Michael King Urieta played Pagong while
Francis Ong (who also bagged an acting nomination) portrayed Matsing, with
Meldea Flor Formacos as Suso, Anthony Cruz as Tarsier with Leo Ponseca (Punong
Manga); Ronald Concepcion (Punong Acacia); John Paolo Garcia (Punong Bakawan);
Rene Nisperos and Rommel Aratan (as the Kaputol ng Saging).
“Ang Pagong at ang Matsing” had
successful performances in Subic , Pampanga, Tarlac, in
SM Southmall, Raha Sulayman Park in Malate, EDSA Shangri-la
Mall, and in the Concert at the Park Open Air Auditorium, inside
historic RizalPark .
A jubilant Tony Espejo, artistic
director says, “This recognition from the ALIW Awards is indeed
a big surprise for Gantimpala Theater. After all, we were in competition with some
of the best theater companies nowadays and the other nominated plays were also
very excellent. Who would ever thought that our modest attempt to re-introduce
to this generation the comic strip by our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal will
give us this honor. I share this to all my cast, artistic and production staff,
most especially to J. Dennis Teodosio who wrote the script and Jesse Lucas, who
composed the music, and to every one who have watched and enjoyed it.”
Gantimpala Theater’s “Ang
Pagong at ang Matsing" will be re-staged in February 2009 in time
for the February Arts Month celebration.

Our sincerest condolences to Norli's family and friends.
Norli, through his Round Eyeglass project, was the first to give us a
venue to screen our short films together in public way back February
17, 2006, our fourth anniversary. That was way before we had our
week-long screening at the Robinsons Galleria Indie Sine (June 11-17,
2008) and special screening at the Cultural Center of the Philippines
(CCP) Little Theater (July 17, 2008). Now that we're working on our
first full-length feature project, "Handumanan" (Remembrance), it is
just appropriate to dedicate this in memory of Norli Lalo, the artist.
Norli, you will be missed.

This November 15, Saturday, 1pm in QC, Free Expression Philippines, a group of filmmakers and artists will meet to redraft the pending MTRCB Reorganization Bill in the 13th Congress with the end to refile it this 14th Congress. PD 1986, which created the MTRCB, is an anachronistic law which stifles the filmmaker's basic right and duty: to express and tell the TRUTH.
For example, PD 1986 has given the MTRCB the power "to approve or disapprove, DELETE objectionable portions" of your work. As you can see, this law is blatantly unconstitutional, runs counter to Article III, Section 4 of our constitution: No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression...
If you stand for TRUTH, and want to make sure that it is not YOUR work being censored next time around, please attend this meeting.
If time permits, strategies in challenging the similarly unconstitutional Anti-Obscenity Bill already approved in the Lower House and pending in the Senate will also be discussed.
Ed Lingao speaks at UMak's 4th Media Forum today, November 21
TV5 News Department Head and veteran broadcast journalist
Eduardo "Ed" Doronila Lingao will be one of the distinguished media
practitioners to speak in the 4th Media Forum organized by the senior
broadcast arts majors of the Center for Performing and Digital Arts
(CEPDA) at the University of Makati (UMak) mini-theater today,
November 21, from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.
Other speakers during the event, with the theme "Opinions &
Limitations: The Philippine Media Commentary Today," are
Malaya/Abante opinion columnist Ellen Tordesillas, Wilfredo C. Perez,
Jr. of DZXL-RMN Manila, Atty. Bernard Gregorio of DZRH, Noel Alamar
of DZMM, and Prof. Danilo "Danny" Arańa Arao of the Department of
Journalism at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Mass
Communication in Diliman, Quezon City.
Lingao previously assumed the post of ABC 5's head of news operations
from 2004 to 2006, the same year he hosted the now-
defunct "Frontlines," an in-depth news magazine show on ABC 5 which
carries viewers to the forefront of political, economic, social, and
even religious conflict aiming to bring interest back to critical
news and elicit active response. Along with Geann Pineda, Jim
Libiran, and Jade Lopez, he also made the 2006 KBP Golden Award
nominee "State of War," a documentary which shows the effects of the
national government's all-out war policy against communist rebels on
the lives of innocent civilians and unarmed activists.
An AB Journalism graduate from UP Diliman, Lingao started his stellar
career as a correspondent for The Manila Chronicle from 1987 to 1989
then moved on to The Manila Times as a senior reporter from 1989 to
1992. He landed his first television job on ABC 5 as a senior
reporter in 1992 before he transferred to ABS-CBN where he became a
reporter for "Hoy Gising!" from 1992 to 1994. He later served as
producer and senior reporter for the former Skycable News, now known
as the ABS-CBN News Channel or ANC, from 1994 to 1998.
The hard-hitting journalist went back to print media as chief
reporter for news of The Manila Times until 1999, when former Pres.
Joseph Estrada filed a 101-million peso libel suit against the
newspaper's executives and journalists, including Lingao, in response
to the controversial "unwitting ninong" story about the former
president witnessing the signing of a deal between the government-run
National Power Corporation and the Argentine engineering firm IMPSA
Asia Ltd. After The Manila Times closed down, he returned to
television as producer and senior correspondent for ABS-CBN's "The
Correspondents" from 1999 to 2004. Along with cameraman Val Cuenca,
he rose to prominence for their actual coverage of the U.S. war in
Iraq.
