Well, stop and think about how much effort YOU have been able to invest
in helping out the local SF cons and you'll get an inkling of what the
problem is. People usually find ways to fill up their days and nights
with activities without even trying very hard. When something new comes
along, clamoring for attention (and time), something else has to give
way to make room for it.
I think that SF fans (certainly including me) would be receptive to
SEEING monster movies (especially funny ones with a local theme), but
that's not the same as being heavily invested in MAKING them, which
requires a much bigger commitment of time and effort and an entirely
different skill set.
