SHIPPING OUT: Billy Campbell reports that when the USA Network's sci-fi hit
"The 4400" returns in June, his Machiavellian character, Jordan Collier, will
have the 4,400 alien abductees firmly in his questionable grasp. "When the
second season begins, it's a year later," says Campbell, whose uber-wealthy
character is one of those 4,400 humans who've been taken for a ride. "Basically,
I've succeeded in getting a lot of them together, and I've created this entity,
almost a little political organization, with me at the head."
Campbell is only scheduled to shoot six episodes of "The 4400," then he's
off to Nova Scotia to jump on a ship for the trip of a lifetime. "I'm sailing
around the world, but it's not a cruise. It's a working venture you can think of
as a year of square-rig sailing university with a crew of about 40 to 45. We
learn navigation and all of that stuff." He explains that "square rig sailing
is the type of boats with square sails, like the old clipper ships."
An avid sailor, Campbell says right after he finished the first season of
"The 4400," "I went straight to Norway to be on a ship for 3 1/2 months. I never
even saw the show till a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't realize how
popular it was." This time out to sea, Campbell says he'll be gone "about 13
months.
It's about the most exciting thing I've ever done."
