Great post, Mark - thank you. Your technical 2nd para stuffed me -
I don't know how to get Word to write/save my postings...I just rely
on this page.
SCREENPLAY: I did once find a NES screenplay on a site, but never
DARYL. And I didn't realise it had been novelised. But I reckon I
know that script by heart now, anyway. I have so much less Barret
material to work with than you lucky Merkins!
DARYL: good, we're agreed on the dying doctor scene. I'd like to
analyse it in more detail sometime, as in fact the script at that
point is the pits. "You can still make it, Daryl...you have to"
and "...you could have given me a medical program and that would be
helpful" and "Remember this always; always remember this. You are
a REAL person. I only wish....(dies)". I've not noticed the no-
contact kiss - perhaps I'm too busy watching the dead doctor
flinch! But it's still a great scene - I'll come back to it another
time. Just imagine if Barret did several takes on those
shoots....could he really keep churning out that non-sentimental
heartbreak stuff?
YOUR BBMs: I feared it would happen! You're quoting movies I have
little chance of ever seeing! I know GRAMMA only from the few
vidcaps scattered round the Web. Now you tell me Barret has it all
to himself and is great. Sickening. But I'm delighted to hear he
does a good job...not surprised, though. I know he dominates in F-
WEENIE, and there are excellent vidcaps around. And his flight from
the bullies in NES -- I've often wondered if those guys enjoyed
roughing Barret up a bit....he was younger, yet had a wonderful
major role, while they just got two brief scenes as nasties.
(There's an interview with one bully on some site. Apparently they
did so many dumpster takes that his hands got sore from banging the
lid!)
NES BBMs: my favourite moment in NES is near the start - "Unicorns.
They were unicorns". He sums up in those four words the gulf
between father and son, adult and child, fact and fantasy. And his
next line "Nothing" seems to show his resignation that the gulf can
never be bridged. Strike you that way? And he can't have been more
than 9 during the shooting. Magic!
DARYL BBMs: Barret's timing was always so good. A little gem as an
example. When Daryl is leaving his foster-home (great scene, great
music) he stands alone on the sidewalk watching Turtle do a runner.
Doc Stewart, off-shot, asks "Daryl, do you know why your friend did
that?" Instead of answering at once, Daryl continues to look
towards the disappearing Turtle for about 1.09 secs before turning
to answer "Is he mad at me?" That tiny delay/pause tells us a huge
amount about Daryl's feelings. Magic acting!
COCOON 1 BBMs: as 'David' (Barret) stands fishing in the stream,
his grandpa tells him that he's going away for good. 'David'
says "Huh! Yer jokin' me, right?" Barret gets the line so right - a
pause, while he thinks it through, then the words, not just of
disbelief, but of not wanting to believe as well as not wanting to
be out-smarted. Magic again! Barret's role in COCOON 1 is small,
but there are some truly great moments. See it if you can, Mark.
SOUNDBYTES: I've tried to leave messages on some fan-sites, where
they might have the know-how and hardware to oblige us. Perhaps
others could do the same - put the pressure on them.
REBIRTH: I hope you're right about DARYL gaining popularity, but I
have doubts (though I made a lady friend of mine watch it recently,
and she loved it, though she normally goes for Sound of Music!).
And isn't the USAF about to phase out the SR-71? I haven't seen
AI. I always wait till a movie comes up on terrestrial TV.
Am I allowed to write this much in one posting, or is it piggy? I
have loads more I want to discuss, but I guess you guys have got to
go out and earn a living. Let's hear everyone's thoughts anyway
(record postbag in June 2002?)
Gotta go....Peter DUOBOLETI
