I don't buy that he had to go into hiding, but if the quotes suggest
that he wanted to, then I agree with that. Usually there is a
significant reason for an actor to just "stop" like that all of a
sudden with not even little projects before they fade away(most will
tell you it's their "right" but that's not WHY they did it).

The close friend you speak of is Rebecca Schaeffer, who is the only
celebrity to date to be killed by a stalker. She was an up and coming
star and was the closest to his age in the last movie he was in. I
don't know how close they were, but that would explain the vanishing act.
