I actually wrote the original remark, but it isn't quoted in
context; also the quote refers to two different people, under much
different circumstances.
Bobby Driscoll won an Oscar at age 12, but now lies buried in an
unmarked pauper's grave in Potter's Field in New York City.
Someone who knew Bob and is member of the Writer's Guild heard
Barret Oliver speaking about his career in Hollywood and how
fleeting it was. He was very impressed with Barret's honesty,
intelligence and the eloquence of his speech.
I'm writing a biography of Bobby Driscoll and trying to find out
what went wrong. I have found many similarities and parallels
between Bobby and Anissa Jones, "Buffy" on Family Affair, and
Jonathan Brandis. Someone is actually quoted on the internet using
almost exactly the same words to describe Jonathan that were used
fifty years ago to describe Bobby. All three were extremely
intelligent, thoughtful and gentle.
I intend to use Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer as a counterpoint. No one
ever used those words to describe Carl. An interesting boy and man
in his own right, but nothing like the other three.
The source I referred to, described Barret as very bright and
completely self-aware. My friend was incredibly impressed with
Barret and thought he would be a great source of information.
I am trying to find a way to get in touch with him to see if he and
I can figure out what made him different from Bobby, Anissa and
Jonathan. The similarities are apparent: Barret is also intelligent,
thoughtful and gentle. The differences are much more subtle.
