Yes, 4-processor G5 (very last version.)

Works great.

Oh, wait- haven't tried that yet. Did it with 2.8.3. Should work
great, though- but If you do it, use 3.0.1 in OSX 10.4.11 due to known
(and KILLING ME!) 1394 bug in 10.5.3.

3.0 is working great software only on the same G5, but coincidently
haven't actually tried it with the Mojo.

Oh, and I think you'll get a firmware flash when you plug the mojo in-
so it may not go backwards without re-flashing.

Ken,

What I think you need to do is to install Ghost at Windows level, then create
bootable media(CD or floppies) and use that to boot from, then restore the
previously created image.

The Ghost installation disk is not bootable per se.

The "new thinking" DS story has yet to be told. I'm sure Terry will
keep an open mind.

Looking forward to seeing it myself. (Honey- where did you put my 3D
glasses?)

Regarding RED, the Apple/Assimilate exclusive just expired. That should
translate into real RED workflows, with Metadata, from other NLE makers
soon, including Avid.

Accessing RED engineers could remain an issue for awhile. Last I heard
there were only 2 of them working 24/7.

Is that enough troops for a true "revolution"?

There is a link on this page to a PDF listing the current Avid-qualified
Macintosh configurations:

http://www.avid.com/products/Media-Composer-Software/system-requirements.asp

> I read some articles about Sorenson Squeeze not running on MAC. Is
> that true?

Sorenson Squeeze is cross platform; but, it's Windows Media creation
abilities on Mac are limited compared to on Windows.

With the standard install on Mac, Squeeze only encodes to a few non-editable
WMV presets. (To be fair, that is more than we Mac users had in Squeeze
4.0.)

One can add the Telestream Flip4Mac WMV encoding plugin to Squeeze, by
purchasing it from Sorenson or Telestream directly.

That is correct. The presets are definitely good enough for approvals; but,
it would be nice to have the tweakability for final outputs.

That said, I decided that I'd rather give my money to Parallels and (gasp!)
Microsoft, to be able to run the Windows version of Squeeze on my new
MacBook Pro.

Works fine in encoding tests so far. I created a shared folder, and both
OS' see it fine. (It's like running Cleaner 5 in Classic all over again!)

As a bonus, I might even learn how to use Avid DVD as a result.

Does this mean that Symphony Nitris under win64 will have the same
limitations as DS when it comes to importing / exporting quicktime
files? Or will Symphony be a 32 bit program running in a 64
environment, in which case what advantages do you get?

I don't know what the I/O QT issue is, but if it is related to QT being
32 bit - then probably yes.
Symphony is a 32 bit app thus limited to 4GB of RAM. In Vista64 it will
continue this limitation. The difference is the way WXP handles memory,
apps are actually limited to only 2GB (or about 2.5GB with the /3GB
patch). So basically double the amount of RAM Symphony can use.

Symphony Nitris running under Vista 64 is a 32 bit application. However, the
drivers are all 64 bit and running under Vista 64 actually does provide some
added head room for RAM so there is benefit to it.

One caveat is that some 3rd party drivers aren't available quite yet so you need
to be aware of that.

When we shipped I believe the Sony XDCAM drivers weren't available. There may
have been others but I know about that one. I'm not sure whether it's available

Yes, THAT'S what I meant.

(I have read the book. As a former Post Production Supervisor I wouldn't
have permitted Murch to use FCP, frankly.)

"Ok Walter, let's see where we're at. Unproven software which probably won't
do accurate neg pulls or any at all. Or it might, we won't know until deep
in shoot. Or during neg cutting. The company behind it says they won't
support and recommend against this use. A new version which may or may not
work as advertised may not be available when we want to go. Not only that,
none of the editorial team has used the software. In fact, you are
completely unfamiliar with it."

"Anything I've left out? Oh, yeah, NOBODY ELSE has ever done this, we'll be
completely on our own."

"Moreover, our Insurers want reassurance we're not heading to disaster here.
Without them on board we ain't got no picture, the studio and investors
stand to lose tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars. All our careers
will be adversely affected if we have to shut down to change systems. Worse,
if Completion takes us over."

"What should I include in my letter to the Film Completion Insurers, eh?"

"Walter?"
  ...

"Hello, Stuart Baird? Hey listen mate..."

How is Vista 64 vs. the 32bit version in performance,
stability and bugs? I've been tempted to try XP 64 but
I doubt Express Pro and Mojo would function properly.

John,

You're missing a key point. Murch was supported by Digital
FilmTree, not Apple. DFT specializes in film post services and
in fact is one of the companies involved in resurrecting negative
cuts on old TV shows that failed to do so in the 70s and 80s. In
addition, no decent negative cutting has EVER truly trusted
electronic lists, regardless of whether from Avid or anyone else.
Most double-check using their own methods. I don't know if CM
had workprint, but typically high-budget features have had work
print, which is conformed to the electronic lists and then negative
is conformed to that. So there's less risk than it appears.

Sincerely,
Oliver

He should have stopped at the Sex Pistols comparison - that was funny!
But in reallity FCP is more like an EMO band for that matter...

At least you're honest about it. Most people facing this decision are unwilling
to admit that
they're afraid to risk their jobs. They couch their decision in techno babble
and market speak,
but it really comes down to FEAR! Fear for their own ass.

Innovation is NOT for the feint of heart.

Has anyone had any luck importing an MP4 into Media Composer? Is there a trick?
Or does
one have to convert it then import it.

Avid doesn't import MPEG directly. They must be converted.

But feinting tends to be for the innovative in my experience ;-)

At least when it doesn't go to plan!
