Subject: [Avid-L2] problems with XDCam and slo-mo into Adrenaline

Howdy All!
I've been shooting with the Sony XDCam F-350 for a little while now. I shot
some slow motion at 60 frames in the 1080/23.97p mode and was able to get it
into the avid just fine. To cut to the chase, could someone clue me into a
good workflow for the Adrenaline and the F-350 shooting at 60 frames in the
1080/29.97p mode

Adrenaline is telling me that the file can't be added to the folder?
Remember, I'm still green here on all of this so what might sound completely
stupid, might just be exactly that.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

It can be a bit of a shock to editors coming off standalone systems -
no more Media Tool (same with Media Manager of course) and no more

What is really bugging me about this thread is that you have a few trusted
people saying IP is
great, then you have Shirley saying they had so many problems they dumped it.

Since this is obviously a highticket item that Avid is banking it's future on,
and I know folks at
Avid read this list, why hasn't anyone at Avid made it mission critical to go to
Shirley's install
and get things worked out? It's not like there are thousands of installs of IP
to deal with yet.

This is the part I don't get. If someone was on a public list I frequent saying
my company
wasn't doing it's job, I would be all over making them happy. Of course we do
that even if
they aren't saying it out loud, but I'm just trying to make the point here that
Avid should have
handled this when Shirley first started posting complaints.

Just beyond me why this hasn't been resolved for her company.

This is the feature that won me over in our shop. It is VERY sad that
non Avid assets don't show up in the Interplay window within the editing
application. I love the idea of one person working with graphic files
and checking them in from Photoshop, then letting the editor access and
import them directly from the Interplay window. Maybe someday. For
now, they still need to be accessed through Access. --J.B.

Thank you, Terry. In fairness, I think Avid did respond to some degree, and
how much they responded is probably not something I can really speak to. I
worked at night the entire season, and I wasn't privy to any conversations KQED
staff might have had with the company either by phone or e-mail, nor do I know
precisely what they did when they sent two engineers in the spring. For all I
know they've been throwing all sorts of resources at our issues, but whatever
they've been doing, it hasn't worked very well.

It certainly feels like there is some corporate malfeasance here, but I'm
sure the issue is more complex than we can know. I think the larger lesson is
something about how difficult it is to determine, when you create a new
technology, just how many weird combinations of factors can influence its
performance.
I have some darkly humorous moments when I think "It's the Sapphire effects!"
Wouldn't it a be the worst kind of thigh slapper if it were true, if the whole
mess of two minute sequence loads, corrupt clips, chains of errors and
crashes, were all about the inclusion of these third party effects? Who knows?

As to the vaunted Interplay workflow, and the alleged user resistance to it,
I'd actually love to stop fighting with the thing and really experience what
it can do, but that will have to wait until it's fixed. Maybe years from now
I'll look back on this experience as I do my first disastrous experience with
Avid itself (which I referenced in an earlier post), as just the painful birth
contractions of a new era.

I think it would be good if you could find out and let us know. If Avid is
trying to fix it,
they deserve recognition for that in the same public forum that that they are

A good assessment. These are the scenarios where it comes into its
own. Just in case you think I'm an Avid salesman - not so! I'm a
freelance trainer who has seen the new setup working properly - I
feel bad about Shirley who seems to have a dog of a system.

Terry,

I think if you take a look at the happy responses, they largely
come from the world of broadcast news or a similar type
of workflow. Gregg's situation is probably different. I'm curious
how it works for those doing long-form/long-term, single
project types of jobs. For example, a documentary, feature film,
reality TV, a season of a TV series, etc.

I think this might be part of the problem for Shirley. The sales
environment (KQED) is broadcast, but the working environment
is the latter. Maybe the truth of the matter is that Avid simply
doesn't have something of this complexity working. Situations
like tracking hundreds of hours of content in ten different formats,
resolutions and frame rates - all for a single end product.

Sincerely,
Oliver

John,

The problem is that Avid is locked into its own, proprietary
media format. Everything has to be converted to Avid-flavored
OMF or MXF. Quantel achieves this sort of linking if you use
Paintbox. FCP achieves it by reading native files and linking
rather than transcoding. Toxik achieves it through an Oracle
database that maintains parent-child hierarchies.

Sincerely,
Oliver

We'll find out soon. BBC Scotland in Glasgow has gone the Interplay

I did, about 1 month ago. I've got the Philips BDP9000 to match my 47" LCD

BlockBusters.

It's slow on loading discs, but I know they all are. There was a 5 BD promotion

With 60 days left for returning, I might consider the Pioneer BDC-202 internal

Have not bought one yet, but...I was at a Costco yesterday watching a
demo with a Blu-Ray deck and HD monitor. It was some space show (not
sure of the title) with amazing shots from space (space shuttle
footage)...I think I stood there for an hour totally fascinated with
all the beautiful images of our planet. I'm afraid if I had that type
of home theatre in my house I would just watch HD all day long...a
joint in one hand and a cocktail in the other. Maybe I should just
stick to SD right now!!!

You don't get NetFlix up there? They have Blu-ray, probably everything
available.

Disney is traveling the US with a big truck full of Panasonic monitors and a few
spokesmodels, doing 'Disney's Magical Blu-Ray Tour' at your local mall. They
set up a booth, show games and features, etc., trying to educate the public so
they know they need to buy the BR players, now that they have the darn
big-screen TVs. The most interesting thing I learned was that the Blu-Ray discs
have a scratch-proof coating- perfect for families with Kids that watch their
movies over and over again, whereas the competing product is reportedly very
scratch-prone. Unfortunately, some movies will only be available on HDDVD.
It's possible that VHS (HDDVD) will win again, but I'm voting on Beta (Blu-Ray.)

And, if anyone doesn't know this already, Sony PS3 includes a Blu-Ray player,
and in most cases the play station is less expensive than a regular blu-ray
player. Of course, then your kids will want all those damn games... and you'll
need some kind of switcher so you can keep you Wii hooked up.

Just pimpin' the client's product...

Sounds like all the early HD demos at NAB. Always a big wet drool spot in
the carpet in front of the monitors.

I'm looking forward to getting a Wii hooked up to an HD set - I'm setting up
my bud's new HD rig when she moves in a couple weeks and that the first
thing we're bringing online ;-)

Not that it will make a difference in getting my ass kicked on the thing :(

I can't believe I missed this post (I am not that active on AVID-L these days).
I would execute the client. Actually, this is what I would do, when the
client would say "we ain't buying a rack". I believe that B+H Photo sells the
Raxxess SKR-42 rack (a full 42 rack unit high skeleton rack with front and rear
rack rail) for under $200. I would buy this rack with my own money, do the
installation IN THE RACK, and when the client would say "we said that we can't
afford the rack" - well, I guess that AVID dongle got flushed down the toilet
accidentally too. MORAL - if 12 year old little Johnny can afford an XBox,
than Dad can afford under $200 for a rack for his business. I just read about
the NYC Cabdrivers that said that they can't afford a GPS for their taxicabs
(which is apparantly now a requirement). WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS MEAN ! Buy
the rack, or die.

Dear Mr. Zelin,
Our company has a convergence ECS-90 and a Sony RM-450 edit controller. I have
been told that you can modify these systems for us so we can edit nonlinearly.
We have a lot of archival footage on betamax, 3/4 inch with no time code and
type A IVC 1 inch. We also have open reel 1/2 inch B&W tape that I'm told you
can add the color back into. We would also want one of those proc amp things so
we won't have to set any video levels and while your at it how bought a console
with one of those buttons that make everything legal. There is no budget for
this project so we were hoping you could use some of our office furniture to
hold the equipment instead of a rack. We hear wire is pretty expensive so I
could bring a couple of firewire cables from home to hook the equipment up. We
want the ability to dub between all the formats mentioned above but we don't
want to waste money on one of those patch bays. We plan to produce broadcast
quality television and would be willing to
purchase a super vhs machine for final delivery masters. I forgot to mention we
are in a time crunch and wanted the system up this weekend. Mr. Zelin do see any
problems with our plan?

I believe Universal is the only company that is HD DVD only. Most are
releasing both.

Well, It a nutshell, the video and the audio are really very good,
but........ :)

I have a Samsung BD-P1200. I also have a Toshiba DVD-A2 player as
well(as well as several other models I have at work for testing
purposes). I'm on my second Samsung because the first one locked up
after about 3 discs and had to be returned. The second has worked
pretty well. fyi., 95% of my watching has been from netflix discs.
Compared to the HD-DVD, it is definitely more finicky. Several times
the discs has locked up and I have to reboot the player. A couple of
discs just wouldn't play the whole way through. I don't know if it is
a player issue or the netflix discs.

Also, all the BD discs I have rented have been in MPEG2. To my eye,
the the VC-1 used predominately in the HDDVD looks better. I see
much less compression artifacts. On the other hand, the uncompressed
24/96 audio of the BD discs sounds fantastic! But, the HDDVD has
been much more stable and reliable.

Funny thing is, before this started, I thought HDDVD had no chance
with the limited mfgr's behind them as well as looking at the format
on paper. But I have to say, the HDDVD camp definitely has their and
so far, I think they have a better product. They REALLY need to get
computer based recorders out thought.

Probably more than you wanted, but....

We were keeping that a secret from you, Greg. But he paid in full while you
were un-subbed

wedding

Well Greg, I wouldn't have put the 2nd request up there if I had recieved a
"credible" response to the first post.
I might consider paying for some "assurance" if I got any to begin with.
But seriously, I was just looking for some
help on getting my Adrenaline doing a file import from my XDCam's blue ray
disc.
If there is a better place to go to find this information, that would be
appreciated as well. Maybe I was simply mislead into thinking
that this list is a place to go for assistance rather than freakin' attitude
which is what I'm getting in far too much quanity here.

Thanks for your input,
Terry
