Keep in mind that we are a small shop and don't have the resources of a
Big Post House.
We did a tour last year of all the NASA field centers as well as all the
major contractors - Thiokol, Boeing, et al. We needed to travel quick
and light, so my DP brought his Panasonic VX-100 and built an RDP (rapid
deployment package - NASA loves those acronyms!). Most of our stuff is
generally shot Beta SP, so I have Beta decks in the edit suite.
I bought a DSR-45 'cause it was reasonably priced, has component in/out
and RS422, and plays/records all DV and DVCAM formats. It works
flawlessly with my (rock-solid) Meridien system, and we have had no
trouble with it. The major drawback - and it IS a big one - is that one
cannot do a digital cut back to the deck. Would that feature be worth a
couple extra grand? In retrospect, yes - I would certainly like to have
that capability.
Having said that, I think it is a valuable little deck, and it has more
than paid for itself, so I don't feel bad about the purchase. I am
going to add a FCP HD suite this year, and I will upgrade the decks when
I do so. I think I am going to hang on to my Meridien when the lease is
up as well - it has been a great system and I see no need to get rid of
it, particularly in light of the stuff I read on the (former) -L about
Adrenaline.
Okay, I'm rambling a bit, but wanted to make a contribution to the L2 on
its maiden flight.

I would actually update the dongle first. This is just in case the
dongle updater is incorrect you are not left hanging. You can still use
version 11. You would have to wait for Avid Customer Service to to
release you a new update.
So I would do Steve's steps 2, 1 and then 3.
Dom Q. Silverio
1. Upgrade Service Pack
2. Upgrade Donger Versioner
3. Install MC 12
Many have discovered that once you go Tiger, there is no going back, unless you completely re-image the system (firewire based clone operation) and Panther CD’s won’t boot it up.
Move cautiously!

The first is correct. The OS needs to be correct
before you install the software, as for the dongle, it
shouldn't matter. The Software won't launch until the
dongle is updated. I've always updated the dongle very
last.
At my last job, once we had updated a PC to v12, we
had to pull all the boards out and reseat them to get
the system working, even though they hadn't been
touched and worked fine in 11.8. The auto color
corrector in 12 just seems to make me lazy.

Hi. Let's get this new L's show on the road!
I'm considering upgrading my Win2K Media Composer 11
to 12. I have the software and the higher service
pack (and I think there's a dongle versioner too). I
don't know what order to install these components. Is
it:
1. Upgrade Service Pack
2. Upgrade Donger Versioner
3. Install MC 12
If that's correct please let me know, otherwise please
advise.
Thanks.

Thanks for setting this up. As you may or may not be aware, I resigned
the Avid-L last week in disgust. Gonna give this a try and see if I can
hang on. ;-)

Jeff, would it okay to stick the latest avid codecs up
in the files section? I have them up on my website now
along with some fcp codecs for when I freelance, and
don't want to search around the Avid site for them.

While I prefer using the menu on a DSR80, I've

so I don't understand why you don't consider it a
"real RS422" deck. It's also half the money.

I’d go with a DSR2000, SDI in, better quality then a Merridian can take for the finishing.
You can get away with a dsr 45 or 1500 for the offline creative editorial setups. 1500 with SDI or DSR45 with YRB.

Avid really didn’t have anyone or anything that would explain it. Digi, however, might.
I’d been asking for training on it, but no-body had any clue as to what was going on.

On my Meridien systems, I am a huge fan of the DSR1800. I have had
mixed results with RS422 on the 1500 decks, but the 1800's have been
flawless for me, and in fact we just bought two more 'cause I like
them so much.

Get some DSR-45's (or 1500As) and you should be good. The entry level JVC and Panasonic decks have 9-pin control but consumer outputs.

Jeff,
Thanks for mid-wifing this new incarnation of the L.
Someone should probably write a Master's thesis on the social/communal dynamics at work in the L. There's probably anthroplogical gold in them thar hills.
Now! I have a question; I'm organizing a couple of Meridien systems to be used on a feature shooting in New Zealand later this year. However, the company wants to transfer dailies to DVcam. I've never personally used this workflow (only DVcam into Adrenaline). Can they come out of a DVcam deck and into Meridien? Is some kind of media converter needed?

There are DVCAM decks like the DSR1500, 1600, 1800 and 2000 that have
(optional) SDI and AES I/O.
There are also decks that only have FireWire.
I would not recommend controlling a deck from Avid through FireWire, so
choose the 1500 or better so that you have RS422 control.
From there on, no diiference with any other deck.
